Cowboys' Ireland to interview for Dolphins' GM job

Bill Parcells is wasting no time in reworking the Dolphins front office. Shortly after firing GM Randy Mueller and a pair of his assistants, Parcells received permission from the Cowboys to interview Jeff Ireland to be the team's new GM, FOXSports.com has learned.

Dolphins sources say that Ireland, the Cowboys VP of College and Pro Scouting, is expected to interview for the job tomorrow.

FOX Sports first reported the week of Parcells' hiring that Ireland would be his primary target, but there was a question about whether he could get him out before the draft. However, to Cowboys owner Jerry Jones' credit, he granted permission for the interview despite having Ireland locked up contractually through the draft.

It's expected that Parcells will offer Ireland the job and equally as expected that Ireland accepts.

Parcells met with players this morning and told some that he was firing Mueller but was not sure about head coach Cam Cameron's fate. However, it would be surprising if Cameron survives the purge.

Just curious... if the team has to give permission for other teams to interview their staff, why would they? Always wondered about that.

Professional courtesy....Oftentimes an employer doesn't want to keep an employee away from a new opportunity.Of course I think it helps that Dallas has done very well post-Parcells; there doesn't seem to be any bad blood between Jones and Parcells.Id

So does anyone think that if Parcells takes Ireland and possibly another staff member, that:

1. He will go after free agents on the Dallas team and....

2. Will there be a deal to compensate Dallas with the #1 pick in this years draft?

We already know that Parcells loathes taking players early in the draft only to have them bust on him.

What say ye all?

I believe just as a team is required to let a coordinator interview for a head coach position they are required by the NFL to let front office personel interview for what would be a promotion.

Parcells may look to trade the #1 pick but he isn't going to give to Dallas for a GM. Now trading it for Dallas's 2 number #1picks and some future picks...well maybe.

That is correct. They are allowed to interview for a HIGHER ranking job. The team would not grant an interview if it was a lateral move to the Dolphins.

No way he gives up the #1 pick.. why would he? "Oh you gave me permission to interview someone and he accepted my job offer. As a sign of thanks here's the #1 pick in the upcoming draft..." Right... Parcells is not the GM. He's not even the president- he's the vice president. The GM will determine if they trade the pick away. The GM will decide who they sign and what happens to the coach. Yes, Parcells has say as the GMs boss, but in the end Parcells is hiring someone to do the work for him... If they wanted Parcells as GM they would have hired him.Parcells is doing his job and making the most important person under him, the GM, is his man... and his man can make the decisions who he wants as coach, as players, etc. Parcells will have some say but no GM is going to want someone else doing their job for them

I don't buy this for a second. He took the VP role, so he could hire away someone from another team and give them the GM title. It was a brilliant move. Parcells will be calling the shots. But naming himself the GM, would have limited who he could bring in from other teams. Now he can hire away someone from Dallas, give them the GM title, but we all know Parcells is calling the shots. He's about to fire the coach before getting a GM? You really think the new GM will hire the coach? It was a title game ensuring he could scoop some good head office people from other teams.

Thanks Teamroc for saying almost what I was going to say. I'm not sure where Ro3384 is coming from but I think he hasn't been watching the same Parcells I have since the early 80's. I'm gonna take it one criticism at time.

1. To say there is no way Parcells would pull the trigger on a deal for the #1 pick is ludicrous.

Parcells is notorious for not wanting to draft a QB or RB in the first round. He doesn't believe they ever live up to expectations and would rather wait to draft one of those postions in later rounds. Ala, passing Steven Jackson and waiting to draft Julius Jones in the second. Also this last years draft Parcells again traded their first round pick to Cleveland(#22 over all) and waited to draft a definsive player Anthony Spencer. They will trade the pick if the deal is right. Whether it's to Dallas or someone else. Count on it.

2.Your right when you say Parcells is not the GM. He's just the guy who's gonna hire the GM. Which makes him the "head Tuna in charge". Huzeinga hired him to right the ship. Gave him the keys to the Dolphin wagon and said, "have at it".

Vice presidents are above GM's. The first move Parcells made was to fire Muelluer. The next move will be to fire Cam Cameron. And the next after that, consulting with the GM of course, is to hire a head coach. Can you spell "Shottinhiemer". I can't.

3. When you say that Parcells will have some say in who is hired you are not correct. He will have FINAL say as to who is hired. It will be his man, his call. Parcells will allow the GM to run the day to day operations, but make no mistake as to why Parcells was hired, he will run the show. Period.
