***Paris 2024 Summer Olympics: July 26-August 11*** USA dominates medal count; Finish tied w/ China for most golds - See ya in Milan 2026! (4 Viewers)

For me, I felt like the opening ceremony was way more focused on showcasing French culture than it was on showcasing the Games and athletes. Obviously it’s expected that the host will be able to showcase themselves, but it just seemed like I was watching a surreal French performance with a boat of some nation’s athletes thrown in there every 10-15 minutes.

Yeah. Admittedly I'm only an hour in, but I think it's pretty weak so far. Just riffs off so many French stereotypes in a cheesy way. I admit that fits in a sense. But my wife and I (each have lived in France) are laughing at how bad this is. I hope it gets better. Lady Gaga was awful.

ETA: And my Lord how much did Louis Vuitton pay for that advertisement disguised as a brand celebration?

I really have no problem with that approach.

Just finished watching the opening ceremonies with my wife. Not embarrassed to say I got a little emotional at the Olympic anthem. There’s so much reported on the bad parts of life - war, poverty, etc. No matter the corruption of the IOC and the seedy parts of the Olympics, I love seeing all the athletes looking like kids at Christmas. This is the best of us as humans and as I get older I appreciate it more and more.

so, i’m in italy and i watched the OC on
RAI 2. curious, has the mechanical horse stopped running on the seine? it ran for about 20 minutes interspersed with a drag runway show and a chick with a moustache and beard.

the women's 400m freestyle showdown that goes Saturday at Paris 2024.

2016 Olympics Katie Ledecky won in 3:56.46
2021 Olympics Ariarne Titmus won in 3:56.69

Canadian Summer McIntosh held the WR for a bit in 3:56.08. Titmus has it back in 3:55.38.

Really looking forward to this one. :excited:
2:52pm ET today. Betting odds...Titmus -250, Ledecky +350, McIntosh +350. Would go with McIntosh at those odds. No betting in New York on this event because of McIntosh being under 18.

Canadian women's soccer given a 6 point penalty in their pool play points for the drone incident.

Putting them in last with -3 points right now. Not numerically impossible to advance, but tough.

Watching the opening ceremony and I have no idea what’s going on.

I have no idea what Kelly Clarkson is supposed to add here. She's painful.

This is already my favorite opening ceremony of all time. But Kelly is almost ruining it.

I fell asleep about 10 minutes after posting this and today I’m reading that the opening ceremony was a total mess? For the bit I watched it seemed quirky and fun - the dancers on the bendy poles were cool.

The Mexican women’s team is just grateful they weren’t penalized on their behalf.

It was definitely unique and had some weird moments but most opening ceremonies do. I think the way they pieced it together made it feel disjointed but personally I liked it and thought the last 45 minutes or so was fantastic.

ETA: the duo doing Imagine, the horse and then rider, the Eiffel Tower, the French National Anthem, the Olympic Flag raising and anthem, the lighting of the cauldron and raising that hot air balloon and then Celine’s song - thought all that was great.

I thought it was really good overall. A bit long though, and the athlete path to the venue was definitely overshadowed by everything else.

Opening Ceremony... it was definitely unique yes. Didn't love it, didn't hate it. There were some parts I really liked, other stuff I fast forwarded through. It agree on the comment it felt disjointed, that was the word I used for it too.

Not really sure on the athlete entrances on the boats. Again, it was novel, and worth doing as a result. But I wouldn't want to see every games after this do something like that as opposed to them walking into a stadium.

The whole thing was quirky and fun. Some folks just don't like quirky and fun

Fun game between Greece and Canada.
Nice to have while we wait for for the real basketball to get started. I appreciate that the Olympics gives men's basketball a platform though. Maybe it'll catch on one day.

Still a little confused how the US picked Lebron as the flag-bearer. His 2 Gold Medals is an awesome accomplishment. Good for him.

Diana Taurasi would have 2 basketball Gold Medals leftover if she lost the other 3 in the bottom of her purse.

I've got FB friends who are livid. I'm guessing the French did some very French things?

Some kind of ménage a trois at one point. Not sure if that is what they would be livid about.

Something different/missing in the women's beach volleyball matches this Olympics. Less captivating for some reason.

ETA: Must be the night time version. Daytime, we're back to what makes this sport the greatest spectator sport in the world...
