***Paris 2024 Summer Olympics: July 26-August 11*** USA dominates medal count; Finish tied w/ China for most golds - See ya in Milan 2026! (4 Viewers)

This is the first day I've had to just sit and watch the Olympics all day and it's been awesome. The men's 10K race was stunning. Watching Valerie Allman walk into the ring, chuck one discus well past qualifying as smooth as butter and then be done was awesome. The mixed 4x400 world record was awesome. Now I'm watching a replay of USA beach volleyball; obviously awesome. Looking forward to catching up on other awesome stuff tonight.

Second leg of the mixed 4x400 almost got them disqualified. How on earth does that happen?!? She needs to buy that judge dinner for saving her butt.
That blew my mind. That would have been an all timer if they had been DQd.
I just watched it and didnt see anything? What happened?

Female runner for the second leg was standing about 25 feet forward from where she was supposed to be for the handoff. The judge was waving frantically for her to get back to her spot and she ran back just before the handoff.
Hmm. I am not seeing that. 1:29 mark. I also dont quite know the rules though

They showed the replay during tonight’s coverage. It was pretty crazy. How do you not know where you’re supposed to start your leg?

Also if someone hasn't seen the 10K men's race. I'd recommend the entire race, but if that's a no go, watch the last lap or two. Incredible theater
Trying to find it in the 4.5 hour replay segment on Peacock
you can filter by sport you know :hophead:
It’s all track and field. I can’t filter by individual event afaik
damn peacock!
I’m fast forwarding a few minutes and seeing who’s running each time. Get hit with 2 minutes of ads each time

So like before that video clip she was way out ahead of that area?

I have a bizarre "problem". I have 3 firesticks and have been watching replays on 2 of them as well as my laptop (a bit). On one firestick I get the ads but I don't on the other one. No idea why but wish the main TV was the one w/o the ads instead of the one downstairs in the gym. No ads on the laptop but the ad blocker is the helper there. Just might have to swap the 2 sticks for a few days.

Pretty insane that the American men are probably gonna go home without a single individual gold medal in swimming. Only 1 more chance in the 1500

US Swimming is gonna have to take a hard look in the mirror for Los Angeles

I fully expected some hairy-chested, no swim cap, no goggles, cargo shorts wearing dad-bod Turkish dude to be kicking *** in some of these swimming events. I guess not. :kicksrock:

About the completely female Olympic boxers- The Washington Post has an article explaining the nonsense here. Alas, it is beyond a paywall, but the important section is here:

This all started because the International Boxing Association, an organization that the International Olympic Committee decertified last year because of serial malfeasance, disqualified Khelif and Lin because they didn’t “meet eligibility rules” during the 2023 world championships. At the time, IBA President Umar Kremlev told a Russian news agency that the federation had “proven they have XY chromosomes.”
But three days before the disqualifications, Khelif defeated a Russian boxer, Azalia Amineva, during the competition in New Delhi. The IBA, led by a Russian president, is as suspicious a source as it gets. When the IOC decided to cut ties with the boxing federation in June 2023, members approved the decision with a 69-1 vote. Allegations of bribes, match fixing and election manipulation plague the IBA. The IOC now oversees boxing during the Olympics.

There's more. but the upshot is that this is comeplete cow puckey. Those women have been boxing for years with no problem.

The US has had an amazing string of dominant athletes in swimming over the last 20 years or so. This time around that star is French.

100 km to go in the Men’s Road Race. Matteo Jorgensen (USA), fresh off an outstanding Tour de France, was +4000 prerace. But the Olympic Road Race is notoriously hard to handicap bc the teams are smaller; 5 countries have 4 riders, 5 countries have 3 riders.

That makes cooperation in the peloton difficult. They’ve managed to keep the breakaway in check through the first 170 km.

Jorgensen or another rider might try to attack solo in the last 30 km. I don’t think we’ll have a bunch sprint finish, but the course gets technical once they get back in Paris so who knows.

The finish is a few hours away - switch over at 11am if you’re bored.

People really need to let this go. The team has no player on the roster under the age of 26. So it's not like they took other rookies instead of Clark.

It was a terrible, terrible look for the decision makers, one of which publicly admitted it was a mistake in hindsight on national primetime television.

Additionally, apparently Angel Reese and Caitlin worked over the national team in scrimmages.

If the team struggles there should be some serious changes made to either the selection process and/or the people involved in the process.

The WNBA completely botched the Caitlin Clark onboarding.....it had no idea how to manage an incoming superstar and the situation was exacerbated by the olympic team selection nonsense.
i mean i largely agree but im still rooting for team usa take that to the bank bromigo

Matthieu van dep Poel just attacked with 45 km to go, and Wou Van Aert matched him.

The greatest rivalry in the sport is going to add another chapter.

Mateo Jorgenson 🇺🇸 bridges across!

The winner will come from Chase Group 2

French dude is about to get swallowed up

Matteo or Healy for the Silver

I'll say WvA for the Bronze because he always podiums

OMG REMCO

flat tire with 3.7 km to go

managed to get a fairly quick bike change but that was intense

no radios so he has no idea what the time gap is (1:00)

the skeet shooting must be impossible to film because the only time I've been sure of what I saw is the super slow mo replay

ETA ok they switched to a handheld camera much better

the wide angle from further back was horrendous

Wait, so the issue that my Facebook is ablaze with (that the Italian boxer lost to a male) is just factually incorrect and the other boxer is indeed biologically female??
The Italian girl quit cuz she got punched hard. Guess she took up the wrong sport.

Not only that, the boxer in question is from Algeria, who is one of the last countries that would send a trans athlete to the Olympics (they have some pretty strict anti- LGBT laws).

They spin the wheel to determine which matchup goes for gold in the case of a tie in mixed team Judo? Bonkers.

And it's the two BIG guys. Let's go...
I have no idea what they are even trying to do to score.
Yeah, me neither. But I am still 100% engaged.

I'm seeing what I think are throws and take-downs but no one is getting the golden point.

Damn, Teddy Riner is 6'8", 315 lb. What a beast.

And wins the gold for France.
