Pick a Pair/Half Decade Album Draft - Bonus Rounds Thu & Fri - Pick three if you want (3 Viewers)

First concert was also Neil Diamond with my parents.

John Denver was the second.

My first concert I got dropped off at, like a suburban kid at the mall? Mötley Crüe and Whitesnake.

Most surreal concert I ever went to with friends? Mötley Crüe, again. New Haven, CT. Tommy Lee fell from the ceiling. And lived. It was quite incredible. He fell from the top of the coliseum and smacked against the barricade on the floor. This report doesn't do it justice. They stopped the show. Nikki Sixx says it all here.

5.02 Jeff Buckley

Grace, 1994

Lover, You Should’ve Come Over

Last Goodbye

Sketches for My Sweetheart the Drunk, 1998

Satisfied Mind

The Sky is a Landfill

Of musical artists that died too early, this is one where I really wish we could have gotten more music out of him before he died. Obviously there is the Hallelujah that everyone knows and loves, but the whole Grace album is sick. And not too shabby of a follow up with Sketches for My Sweetheart the Drunk considering he was dead and all

I am guessing my first concert was either Charlie Pride or The Oak Ridge Boys with the parents.

First "real" one was Primus/Melvins at The Rave in Milwaukee

First 3 concerts:

1. Anthony Newley/Burt Bacharach at the Greek Theatre  (with my parents)- 1975

2. Neil Diamond at the Aladdin Hotel (with my parents)- 1976

3. Queen at the Forum (1980)
somewhat similar

1. Pete Seeger and the Weavers at the College of Marin (75+/-) with parents

2. ...? something bad. with parents.

3. Queen Oakland Col. tour '80. Tim and I saw the same tour.

4. OMD at the Kabuki, SF '81

5. Depeche Mode at the Kabuki, SF '81

81, my parents inexplicably opened the door for me to see shows with friends, so I saw as much as possible. I think they'd drop us off and pick us up, but I also remember riding the bus to in and out of SF before I got my driver's license.

I guess I'd let 14yo floppinho go see a show with friends here in NYC. But it would probably suck and cost a fortune.

oh!...met another parent at his new school at a welcome party- nice guy and his kid also plays and writes music (busks in Central Park) and is looking for a drummer. And so it begins!

I don’t think my parents ever took me to a concert.

My first three concerts were:

1. Rush/Marilion - Nassau Coliseum

2. Judas Preist/Dokken Nassau Coliseum

3. INXS/Del Fuegos - Jones Beach

Not counting the bluegrass festivals I went to with my father (including one of the greatest ever held in '73):

1. Steve Miller Band w/Boz Scags opening (IIRC), 1976

2. Kiss w/AC/DC opening, 1977

3. The Kinks w/Alvin Lee of Ten Years After opening, 1980

WHOA.  Didn't expect these to go so soon (nor did I expect him to).  Was on my short list.  Last Goodbye is one of my top 10 favorite songs.  Niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice.

The first Mr. krista's music and voice were always compared to Jeff Buckley's.  Hard to think of a better compliment than that!

I suspect my first concerts were from the Louisville Orchestra, as my dad had season tickets and made my sorry and sulky ### go to those even as a wee child, which I only appreciated many years later.

First rock/pop show was with my mom - Sha Na Na opening for Andy Gibb.  :bag:   @Mister CIA

And also, my parents nver took me to a show. In fact, I am not sure they have ever been to a concert in their life, which is super odd especially considering my brother and I have been to thousands.

John Denver was my first!

Round 5.03

Spoon - Gimme Fiction (2005)

Gimme Fiction is just a fitting animal for its name, one borne after the groove-heavy tracks of their second album on Merge Records, which will remain unmentioned. It begins with an absolute beast of a song, the aptly titled "The Beast and Dragon, Adored" and carries on in its brilliance through the Stones-esque disco of "I Turn My Camera On" and the straight rock stylings of "Sister Jack" until one hits "Merchant Of Soul," the album closer.

Spoon - They Want My Soul (2014)

This one I managed to listen to this all the time back during its release. From the opener of "Rent I Pay" through to the sunny pop of "Do You" to the album's closer, "New York Kiss," it's Spoon's finest album this decade, in my opinion. There's one hit-or-miss track on the whole thing, and the rest is spot-on.

See, Eephus, there are late-career albums here! This one is nearly two decades after their debut.

#2 and #3 are awesome.
KISS was a birthday present for turning 12. Just to rub it in, they were floor seats, thanks to my sister's friend/boyfriend at the time.

The Kinks was another birthday present.  I took a girl who lived up the street; I had 'stolen' her from one of my best friends who liked her first.  To be fair, she wasn't interested in him.

My first 2 concerts were both Englebert Humperdinck(75 and 76) and the 3rd in 77 was Neil Diamond all with my parents and grandparents.

Saw the Stones in 81 with my older cousin and my first solo concert was Iron Maiden in 83.

First concerts were Green Day with Pansy Division, Stone Temple Pilots with Meat Puppets and Metallica with Danzig. I forget which one was actually first, I think they were all 94.

Pulling the ol' switcheroo, finally taking strategy and scarcity into account.

Nick Drake

Five Leaves Left (1969)

Time Has Told Me - yet another of my favorite songs of all time.

River Man - kind of the obvious choice, yet here I am.  I would take "Thoughts of Mary Jane" but it has a wee bit too much flute.

Pink Moon (1971)

Tough choice between this and his only other album, Bryter Later, which has my second-favorite song from him (Hazey Jane II).  I decided to go with the more bleak of the two, which is saying something from Drake.

Which Will

Place To Be

One of Mrs E's goth friends cancelled so I've been deputized tonight. Twin Tribes is headlining. Don't know a thing about them.

I'll pick Johnny Cash At Folsom Prison late 60s and American Recordings from early 90s.

Cash will look great on the t-shirts alongside Stevie and Bob Marley.

Please @ next

Damnitall.  Those were the exact two albums I was gonna draft.

First concert: Neil Diamond at MSG with parents. Yes, yet another drafter with Neil Diamond as a first concert (with parents).

Second: Triumph / Yngvie Malmsteen at the Spectrum.

Third: Genesis / Paul Young at Veterans Stadium.

I put a Paul Young poster on my freshman dorm wall.  One of my neighbors, Jane, came into my room during my first semester and wordlessly looked at me, then looked at the poster, then at me, then at the poster.  Turns out he was playing nearby (Boston College, I think?), we went, and Jane has remained one of my two closest friends to this day.

Pretty sure I posted this recently, but my first real concert was The Wailers at the Holiday Inn in Manama, Bahrain in 1988.  One of the biggest mind-shaping moments of my life.  No video, but I'm sure it sounded very much like this live show in CT.

Very nice - that was next for me and thought about taking them in round 4.

Nice! I put Grace on when I saw this post. I got it when it came out because I heard Last Goodbye and the title track on the radio and liked them, but I was so into grunge/heavy music at the time that I didn't appreciate it as much as I should have right away. Revisited it in the early '00s and it's been a favorite ever since.

Dave Matthews Band with Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals and Ozomatli as the openers.  Would've been '98 or '99, Before These Crowded Streets tour.  Summer show at what was then Ralph Wilson Stadium.  Went with my dad.  I'll never forget the crowd passing a joint down the line, my dad longingly looking at it, debating whether to take a hit, before remembering he's with his 11-12 year old and just passing it down the line to the next person.  Regrets.

Someone get popsicles
Someone do something 'bout this heat
Cuz it's late in [September] and tar's still melting in the street

Round 4 Stiff Little Fingers

Originally named after a Deep Purple song , Highway Star, they fell into the punk scene and as Jake Burns described became a K-Tel punk cover band and  became inspired by the Clash’s first album they wrote about things around them.A Belfast band with Catholics/Protestant members  singing songs about the troubles & how opposed they were to both sides of the conflict.

1979- Inflammable Material- my favorite punk album of all time . Aptly named album

Suspect Device

Wasted Life

Alternative Ulster

1980-Nobody Heroes
