My thoughts on the Chargers' performance tonight:

Marcus McNeill should pass Leander Jordan on the depth chart based on tonight's performance. Jordan whiffed KGB (resulting in a sack) while McNeill was impressive both run-blocking and pass-blocking. If Jordan gets the start again next week, I'll be surprised.

Cromartie showed nice skills on the INT.

Tim Dobbins looked great. With Cooper, Wilhelm, and Dobbins as the backup inside linebackers, that unit is totally stacked. (Phillips and Harris looked good at OLB as well.)

Manumaleuna looks like he's lost about twenty pounds since the June mini-camp. He ran pretty well and should get a lot of playing time this year as the second tight end.

It was great to see Vincent Jackson make a few big plays. He's been making them all throughout camp, but games are always a bit different. I hope he stays healthy this year.

Kurt Smith got nice hangtime as well as distance on both of his kickoffs.

It's hard not to be excited as a Charger fan this year. I've been a fan for a long time (my family had season tickets starting when I was six or seven years old), and I don't ever remember a Charger team being as talented as this one is, from the top of the roster to the bottom.

I sure hope Rivers stays healthy. The dropoff between him and Feeley/Whitehurst is immense. Whitehurst may be good eventually, but I wouldn't want to count on him this year.

Hi Joe and the the rest of the guys.

I'm a longtime Footballguy (since '01 I believe) and I don't post very often. I don't really come here (to the forums) that often either, I prefer the email updates and reading the articles on the website. I have other sources for news as well and I prefer to formulate my own opinion but I do rely heavily on the VBD software and 1st hand team accounts. This year, thanks to free NFL Network on Direct TV, (Hooray!) I'm able to watch many more preseason games than in the past. My problem though is I'm a restaurant owner and I work around 50-60 hours a week and I have very little time to watch Football. I read the news every day and thats how I stay on top of it. I am an avid fantasy Football owner though. I've been actively playing for 12 years now. Hopefully, in a couple years I'll be able to devote more time to my favorite hobby. Footballguys is the best site for fantasy football bar none. Joe and David, you guys have done a fantastic job of building up your following. Ok, On to the report...

I watched the 1st half of the game. The game is on very late (taped) via NFL Network on the West Coast. I worked til late today.

Here's what I saw:

From a fantasy perspective, Green Bay is going to have a tough time if they don't figure out that zone blocking scheme, get Ahman Green back quickly and/or find a runner thats comfortable in the scheme. The O'line was consistently overwhelmed and Favre did not have any time to throw the ball. San Diego was extremely fired up and the Packers could not match the intensity level. Later in the 1st half, when things calmed down a bit, Favre was able to make some plays. The running game got pretty much nowhere and it didn't matter who was running the ball. Let me say this, if and only if, the Packers can fix the O' Line and give Favre time to find his receivers and clear some running lanes, will this team will be ok. I think its to early to tell yet but at this point, it does not look good.

On the defensive side of the ball the team did not look good. Ahmad Carroll was horrible. Rookie linebacker AJ Hawk looked out of his league, he played small to me. The only player that impressed me was Gbaja-Bamila, the DE, he had a nice sack on Rivers and was extremely quick and fast. The team could not stop the run or the pass.

I would avoid Packers skill players right now, based on this game in any draft unless you get great value for them.

I should also tell you guys I am deaf and I am very good at reading lips and the body language of people. One nice feature of NFL Network I like is, they don't air many commercials and spend quite a bit of time rolling the cameras on the players. At halftime I was interested to see Favre standing by himself most of the time and with a very pensive thoughful look on his face. Nobody was saying very much and the general attitude of the team seemed to be one of quiet desperation. there are not enough playmakers on either side of the ball. This team needs some answers fast. Mike McCarthy might be in a little over his head but the cupboard is pretty bare so its not really his fault.

Now to the Chargers.

Philip Rivers is going to be be a fine quarterback. He has good command of the offense, the players respect him and he knows where to go with the ball. San Diego will keep on rolling with him and won't miss a beat. Rivers reminds me right now of a young Jim Everett before he got happy feet. He doesn't look very mobile but can step up and move a bit to avoid the rush. I can see where people compare him to Dan Marino.

His passes were not as sharp or as fast as Marino but he does get rid of the ball quickly. I thought his arm would be a little bit stronger but its more than adequate. He has a nice touch on the ball and was accurate with his passes. His receivers did not get that much separation so he had to put the ball on the money. He did so consistently.

Ladainan Tomlinson did not play and hardly ever does in the preseason. I was very impressed however with Michael Turner. The 2nd year pro has good burst and a nice blend of speed and power. He is a definite handcuff and a guy that will put up good stats if LT were to get hurt. He had several nice runs up the gut and a couple to the outside (one for a TD)accelerated around the corner and took off.

The receivers are going to be underrated but each of them brings something to the table and it is a good unit overall. I see Gates being the main focus with a few more balls going to the receivers but overall defenses will have a hard time stopping the Chargers. Rivers spread the ball around nicely and didn't seem to lock onto anyone in particular. Gates played sparingly and looked good. Vincent Jackson is a nice end zone target and showed it by catching a TD. He has good size and is quick enough. Eric Parker will get his.

Rivers also threw a couple passes to Maneumaleuna (sp) who looked pretty good as well.

the Charger Defense is for real. The front 7 is fast and furious. Look for alot of sacks and negative plays. I think the secondary will mature and will get plenty of interceptions as a result. Jammer made a couple nice deflections and the coverage was there. Its easy to play defense when your front 7 can generate good pressure consistently.

That's what I saw tonight. Hope it helps.

:goodposting: Thanks.

Tim Dobbins looked great. With Cooper, Wilhelm, and Dobbins as the backup inside linebackers, that unit is totally stacked. (Phillips and Harris looked good at OLB as well.)
I asked this earlier and nobody ould answer me. Did Wilhelm's sack in the first quarter come when he was put into the regular lineup or was it a passing down lineup?

From what I saw on my TV, early on the Packer o-line was dominated. Linemane were getting blown back and there was no lane to run much less cut back on. Favre was sacked 4 times in 3 series. I know Favre is not the most nimble, but he is no Lynn Dickey. The oline will have to improve if the packers will win at all this year.

At halftime I was interested to see Favre standing by himself most of the time and with a very pensive thoughful look on his face.
Ive seen the Packers play for the first time ltwo years ago and he was liked that then. I remember him always being sort of a recluse on the sideline during games. Every now and then you'll see him joke around with someone but most of the time he's by himself.

GB was good against the pass last year. Look it up.
 Artificially inflated Pass D ranking. There was only one other team in the entire NFL, that had less passes thrown against them than the Pack. Conversely, only 5 other teams had more rushing attempts against them.Best way to protect a lead when playing against a QB like Favre, is to keep the ball out of his hands. So when teams got out to early leads on the Pack, they just sat on those leads with their run game. This was easy to do, considering how pathetic the Pack's Run D was last year.Teams did not pass on the Pack for two reasons;A.) They didn't need to.& B.) They didn't want to.End result, an artificially inflated Pass D ranking for the Pack.

How did SD's o-line look? Left tackle in particular
Jordan looked decent I suppose. He gave up a sack though. McNeil looked much better in pass blocking, but his run blocking was just meh. Everytime he got to the second level of the Packer D, he either blocked nobody, or the Packers would run away from him (Granted If I was a safety I doubt I'd want to lock up on a 6'7" 350 dude). For the pass blocking alone, I'd say McNeil won the first rd. He should definitly get the start next week in chitown.

You need to be on offense to commit penalties?
Please don't tell Jammer Ahmad Carrol that. If you took away pass interference, he'd have almost no stats whatsoever.
Fixed.
From the general tone / observations of various posters on Ahmad Carrol and what I saw for myself, I've just got one question. Why is this guy still with the Packers? He's suxored bad every year he's been in the NFL. When do they finally pull the plug on him?

Tim Dobbins looked great. With Cooper, Wilhelm, and Dobbins as the backup inside linebackers, that unit is totally stacked. (Phillips and Harris looked good at OLB as well.)

I don't know exactly what you're asking, but hopefully this will answer your question anyway.Donnie Edwards and Randall Godfrey did not play. Matt Wilhelm and Stephen Cooper started in their place.

When Wilhelm got his sack, it was 2nd and 20, and the Chargers were in a nickel defense. The three linebackers were Merriman, Wilhelm, and Phillips.

In the regular season, I would expect Edwards to be in instead of Wilhelm in this situation. (If he isn't traded.)

He will be cut.
I'm not making fun, but this gets an LOL. ;) There's zero chance he'll be cut.Edwards has a low salary (just ask him), so that's not stopping anyone from trading for him. If another team has an injury or otherwise becomes desperate for a linebacker, Edwards is still on the trading block. A trade could happen anytime from now until October 17. (Remember Fonoti was traded during the season last year, and he was also in the final year of his contract.)

You are correct about salary. Nobody wants to pay him what he wants salary wise. Nobody will. The worst case (for him) is to be cut at the 53 deadline. Inside sources say this will happen. That's all I'm going on.

Can I ask who?The only people I've seen suggesting this as a possibility are east coast media and message board posters. Nobody associated with the Chargers. AJ Smith has made it pretty clear that Edwards won't be cut, and cutting him makes no sense anyway. He's still one of the Chargers' top three or four linebackers, and the team will definitely keep more than four linebackers on the final roster. If it comes down to Carlos Polk or Donnie Edwards for the final roster spot at LB, Edwards will get the nod.

It appears Gado did nothing tonight. Did he show anything at all?? I may be in the minority, but still don't see Green being able to come back enough to be a meaningful fantasy RB. Davenport has never shown much of anything. Which naturally leads one to ask about whether Gado has a shot a the starting gig. I haven't heard a lot of positive buzz from training camp on him, which makes me a bit skeptical on Gado.

Problem with that assesment is that NO Pack RB did anything last night due in a large part to the O'line play being so abysmal.Never a good idea to start a rookie on your Offensive line, unless it's a bonafide can't miss prospect like Pace.

The Packers are planning on starting TWO rookies, neither of whom fit the definition of a protypical can't miss offensive lineman.

I don't think it's really going to matter who is running the ball for the Pack this year.

Fonoti was a completely different scenario though. Fonoti was doing nothing and was offering nothing to the team. To get a 6th rounder (or whatever it was) was an anything-for-nothing deal. Edwards is a starter and potential pro-bowler (even at this age). I agree with you that there is next to zero chance he gets cut. If that was going to happen (and why would it?), it would have occurred already.I don't see Donnie going anywhere this year.

I was looking at my projections for GB running backs yesterday, and after about 20 minutes just gave up. who knows at this point, and quite possibly who cares?

Unless the Oline can get it together, probably not. I do believe Green still has the most value because of his receiving ability. If Favre is not going to get much time, he'll need a quick option, and a healthy Green can be just that.

Green played in a zone blocking scheme from HS to college. He runs well in it and even if he gets hurt again should help with the reads and cuts.

Tell Logan Mankins and Bill Belichick that. Also, it is way too early to judge the offensive line. That was ONLY the first game action the rookies had not to mention they all are learning a new offense and blocking system.

Random Thoughts...Preseason Game #1 @ San Diego

Rough Start

The opening 6 minutes of the game were a complete trainwreck. The Chargers intensity was not met by the Packers in any phase of the game. Too many mental errors and the overall team execution was pathetic. Bad kickoff return, 1st offense 3 and out, one player short in punt formation, poor punt, and then the 1st defense gave up multiple TD strikes. :(

Coaching

Mike McCarthy did a nice job regrouping the players after the rough start and some progress was made by a few key players. The coaching staff effectively used the replay challenge system twice (including a TD reversal) and made a nice on-side kick call after the Packers tacked on their lone field goal. In a real game these type of decisions can help turn momentum and might help the Packers steal a game that they are outplayed in, like they were last night. I also felt the use of the no-huddle offense after recovering the on-side kick was aggressive and sent the offense an attacking message that was needed at the time. Next week the Packers need to come out ready to play from the opening whistle.

QB's

Favre looked good but Aaron Rodgers stole the show.

- Brett Favre showed that he still has all of the physical tools to play. For the second week in a row he did not throw an INT or have an "oops" pass, even in the face of constant pressure. He did a great job keeping plays alive.

- Aaron Rodgers was the Packers MVP Saturday night. He displayed almost everything that you want to see from your QB of the future. He had great pocket awareness making numerous sidesteps to create more time. He also showed some mobility to pick up a 1st down and even showed nice zip on a few deep passes. He did struggle to end the 1st half managing the clock. The on-field experience should help there a great deal. He looked comfortable in the hurry up during the 3rd quarter and did a great job finding his secondary receivers the entire night.

RB's

No buzz...just waiting for Ahman Green. Nothing at all on 1st & 10 creating poor down and distance situations.

- Najeh Davenport didn't get a lot of work but when he was in there he moved the pile a few times and created positive yardage plays. He didn't show much burst though.

- Noah Herron did little to earn future playing time. Maybe the training camp is starting to take a physical toll on him, maybe he's just coming back down to reality. He could be a nice 3rd down back to use on draws or screens, but he just doesn't look like an every down back to me.

WR's

Solid performance. Few drops compared to last weeks scrimmage.

- Donald Driver is solid and Favre targeted him often in the 1st quarter. He was able to get seperation a few times and just missed hauling in a TD catch on a skinny post route. Solid showing for the veteran.

- Robert Ferguson made the play of the night leaping to hall in a high pass from Brett along the sideline. However, he was nowhere to be found the rest of the 1st half.

- Greg Jennings again showed promise. In the 2nd half he used his hands well in traffic to gain seperation. He made a few nice catches and was much better than the 2nd team cornerbacks of the Chargers. He did make a few rookie mistakes in the 1st half that he'll need to learn from: he was caught by surprise on a "hot" pass from Favre when San Diego blitzed, on a different 3rd down pass he cut his route off a yard or two short of the first down instead of stretching the pattern to move the chains, and then dropped a catchable ball the following play on 4th down. Overall he again looked like a player with upside but tonight we caught a glimpse of a rookie who still needs to improve.

- The rest: Rod Gardner looked better than he did in last weeks scrimmage, Marc Boerigter didn't see the field until late in the contest when he was outfought for a ball in the red zone, and Corey Rodgers got a chance to return a few punts (at least he caught them during the game).

TE's

- After being targeted a great deal in last weeks scrimmage...the tight ends made almost no impact in the first preseason game.

Offensive line

Failure in almost every sense of the word.

The biggest area of concern for the Green Bay Packers at this time. The starting tackles (Tausher and Clifton) looked solid. The center (Wells) looked okay but overall the interior of the line was exposed against San Diego. G Spitz didn't get his hands extended a few times and this led to penetration. G Colledge appears to do a better job in pass protection right now and adjusts well to line stunts but he seems to get off-balance when the Packers attempt to run the ball. The rest: The back-ups were below average and for the second week in a row back-up left tackle Junius Coston looked horribly out of place and was beaten repeatedly.

Defensive line

Little presure was applied to the quarterback.

Looked average against the run (that might be viewed as a negative considering LaDainian Tomlinson didn't play) and looked poor when the Chargers dropped back to pass. A few starters were dinged early on and had their evenings end early, but the back-ups showed little to distinguish themselves. KGB was the lone defensive lineman who created any pressure. He did so on multiple occasions and made a great play to sack Philip Rivers. He also created a false start penalty. The rest: Colin Cole looked solid and showed hustle tracking down plays run to the opposite side of the formation. Mike Montgomery looks like he's playing for the highlight reels because he was freelancing every snap he took...often taking himself completely out of plays. He isn't even going to make the team if that keeps up.

LB's

The linebackers made a lot of tackles and seemed very active, but need work in pass coverage.

- Nick Barnett had another nice game. He seemed to shed blockers well and made a few solid plays in pass coverage. On one play he was too aggressive and found himslef out of position, which opened up a nice hole for a first down.

- A.J. Hawk opened a few eyes during his first real exhibition game. He started off poorly when Antonio Gates made him look very foolish in pass coverage. At this point Hawk is not capable of covering speedy TE's or RB's due to poor technique. Howevr, he did very well making plays sideline to sideline and was always around the ball. Against the run he shows no fear and blew up the FB to close the hole on one short yardage play in particular. The light appears to be turning on for the Packers 1st round pick - he made nice strides from last weeks scrimmage.

- Ben Taylor stayed under control, made solid plays in coverage, showed fundamental tackling ability and timed a blitz well. Nice game for the free agent pick-up.

- On the other hand, Abdul Hodge made a few very physical hits in run defense but looked lost covering TE's and got caught out of position a few times. He showed that flash again, but I just don't see him being ready to start week 1. He did make a nice play on special teams. This and short yardage formations might be how he contributes early.

- The rest: Roy Manning might be losing his back-up LB spot to Tracy White who looked like a keeper against the Chargers. White was a beast on special teams which should only help his cause.

DB's

No big plays...again. Couldn't make plays on 3rd down, which kept too many drives going.

- Charles Woodson played up and down. He each broke up a pass and looked solid playing on an island most of the 1st quarter. He did get a chance to field a punt taking it just 2 yards and was even seen jawing at an official late in the game. I'm not sure what to make of him yet.

- Al Harris looked decent but just a step slow. He was always in position but just didn't get his head around quick enough to make a big play and was even the victim of the TD recpetion (later overturned). He looks like he missed a lot of the OTA's. Of course, he did miss the OTA's due to his contract issue.

- Ahmad Carroll looked like the exact same player that he was under Mike Sherman. Undisciplined and lackidasical with technique. He could have been flagged for a penalty or two (but wasn't) and he did give up another TD. He just doesn't improve on his mistakes.

- Marviel Underwood suffered some type of leg (knee?) injury. He had been impressive early in camp, but the injury didn't look good.

- Tyrone Culver was picked on quite a bit and made a few mistakes. He appeared to keep his head on straight though and he made some adjustments including a nice play in run support to prevent a 1st down. He needs some seasoning yet, but he has solid instincts and will make the team.

- Jason Horton was slow to react in pass coverage and took a poor angle on Michael Turner's TD run. He isn't going to make the cut, nor should he.

K & P

- Billy Cundiff and Jon Ryan did nothing to lose control over their position atop the depth chart at K and P.

Overall, the Packers were outclassed by the Chargers. Green Bay's only saving grace might be a weak schedule and a poor division.

:goodposting: Excellent analysis Trader Jake.I think as the offensive line goes so goes the team. Last night they looked horrible. Have to keep in mind though that they have two rookies starting and that it is a new scheme that will take some getting used to. I'm thinking and hoping that we see some improvement from week to week. If not, it will be L-O-O-O-O-O-O-N-G season!

Marviel Underwood is out for the season.
Packers S Underwood Out For Year With Torn ACL/MCLLen Pasquarelli, ESPN.com - Green Bay Packers safety Marviel Underwood will miss the entire 2006 season after tests on Sunday confirmed that Underwood sustained torn anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments in his right knee. Underwood may also have some ancillary cartilage damage. The Packers will subsequently place Underwood on injured reserve.
He looked solid so far too. :kicksrock:

Again, I was very impressed with Michael Turner. I'm in agreement with many that this guy will be starting somewhere soon enough & is great LT insurance if nothing else.

He looked great against the Packers on Saturday. Then again, who didn't? :bag:
