Prince Dead at 57 R.I.P. (1 Viewer)

Heard about it at school (teach HS). All the white kids were like, "who?" All the black kids were like, "my auntie is gonna be real sad tonight."

 
Between this and Bowie, I'm flabbergasted at how this year has begun.

If Brett Michaels succumbs to the Beetus, my entire "get laid" collection from the 80s is going to be unusable.

I was just cranking some Prince tunes letting my kids hear some stuff...had the playlist on shuffle.  Sure enough, when I leave to drop a deuce,  Erotic City comes pumping out.  My 13 and 11 yr old got a real kick out of that.

Well I just drove past Paisley Park on my way to the gym. Traffic backed up, tons of people crossing the highway to get there. Cops closed the turn lane and no traffic allowed by there. Lots of purple balloons and flowers.

When I lived in the Twin Cities I was more into the Blues Scene, Lamont Cranston, Doug Maynard and what not.  I was far more likely to be at the Caboose or the Blues Saloon or the Medina Ballroom than at First Avenue, but I did get down there one night when Prince and his entourage showed up.  His people were obnoxious, trying to clear a path for him to get to some tables upstairs.  One of his bodyguards threatened me to try to clear the path.  I did not feel threatened and said they were free to go around.  That little Purple fellow told his bodyguard to chill.  He apologized for his group.  Later that night he sent a bottle to my table.  The crowd there did implore him to take the stage, though he was not scheduled.  He did for two songs.  Talented fellow, though like I said, not really my cup of tea, but the girl I was with loved it.

I'm a music vagabond with many fond memories of the Minneapolis music scene in the 1980s and 1990s, quite familiar with the venues you listed.  Seen more shows than I can count at First Ave across many genres, but what I really remember about my first visit there was just taking stock of the room and picking out what parts had scenes from Purple Rain filmed there.  What crossed my mind today was how much reverence just about any music act in the Cities had for Prince, regardless of style of music.  Prince covers were common at any local live music show, from aspiring pop stars Trip Shakespeare/Semisonic playing a straight cover of "Erotic City" at a festival, to the Gear Daddies adding an alt-country twang to "Little Red Corvette" at the Turf Club to jam band The Big Wu remixing "Raspberry Beret" in their image during their regular Wednesday night gig at the Cabooze.

When my family made the commitment to move to Minnesota, one place we looked to live was out in Chanhassen, not far from Paisley Park.  Realtor told us about a recent party Prince hosted that ended when the police responded to a noise complaint... called in from five miles away.  Instant hero status in my world.

The black kids treated it like how I would react if Michael Bolton died.  "Oh man my mom really liked him."

At least half our school knew he was. Nobody knew who Bowie was. It's understandable though, Bowie and Prince haven't really been all that relevant outside of their aging fanbase since late 80s-early 90s. This is like a kid in HS in the 80s/90s not knowing who Benny Goodman or Leonard Bernstein were when they died.

 
Anyone think he was underrated as a guitarist?  

Personally, I don't think he was underrated because as far as I know he was considered one of the best performers/musicians ever.

By the general public?  Yes.

By other guitarists and guitar enthusiasts?  No.

"I never spoke with Prince. He always struck me as a private guy. Maybe he was shy around strangers. We never had much actual interaction – a couple nods in passing, but no real words were exchanged.

The Twin Cities of the 1980s was a very special time for all of us local musicians. There were the North Minneapolis R&B artists, the South Minneapolis guitar rock bands, and in the center of it all was First Avenue/7th Street Entry.

I've seen Prince perform sold out shows with The Revolution at First Ave, he and a rhythm section jamming as a guitar/bass/drums three piece in the Entry for 30 people, and was selfishly frustrated when he took over "the main room" for 25 days of filming Purple Rain.

I had the pleasure of spending seven days recording the basic tracks for my first solo album at Paisley Park in December 1988. It was the most professional studio I had ever seen at that point in my life. On the seventh day, I moved from the B room to Studio A, which was Prince's primary room. I remember seeing Sheila E's percussion in one of the isolation booths. The large control room was decorated with several of Prince's scarves. It certainly felt like Prince's home.

Prince was an artist through and through – always pushing himself to new levels, often creating controversy through his actions and words, and ultimately creating a lifetime of wonderful memories for the world with his incredible volumes of published (and unheard) works.

I heard the news while driving from Tomah WI to Minneapolis. I immediately flipped on The Current 89.3 FM to make sure what I was hearing was true. Sure enough, there was a live report from outside Paisley Park confirming the sad news of Prince's passing.

I'm two blocks from First Avenue as I write these words. Friday and Saturday nights, I will walk that same stage we all know from the movie. The exterior walls of First Avenue are covered with stars to honor the musicians who made an impact on music fans in Minnesota.

Make no mistake: Prince was the brightest star in these Northern skies. My deepest condolences to his family, friends, and fellow musicians. Prince's music will give consolation and comfort to the collective grief. Godspeed."

WTF?  :lmao:  Bennie Goodman was popular in the 30's and Leonard Bernstein had nothing to do with pop music. It'd be more like kids in the 80s/90s not knowing who Jim Morrison and Jimi Hendrix were. And kids in the 80s/90s who didn't know those guys would be few and far between.

Don't forget Merle Haggard, Keith Emerson, Paul Kanter (Jefferson Airplane), Maurice White (Earth Wind and Fire), and there was Scott Weiland and Lemmy in December.  Rough couple months.

 
So how many instruments did he play on those first albums?  What other artists can compare to that breadth of talent....Stevie Wonder?

 
i went on a crazy googlnet search and found one thing i rememberd about prince he played the hell out of morning papers on none other than the arsenio hall show the year was  1993 and the world was a lot different but anyhow that performance is why i like the song and i found that date and them bam found some crazy site that had the video that probably put computer ebola on my thing here but bam i got to see it again and it was a good as i remember prince guitar solos the hell out of it and the drummer just kicks it in to overdrive at the end when he is rocking out to na na na na na and it rules so bam that is what swc has to say about it take that to the bank brohans

 Bowie was popular in the 70s. Ziggy was released 44 years ago. That's the same distance from the peak of Goodman and 1982. You will say Bowie had a career beyond 72, but Goodman also had a long career as he moved farther into jazz and classical. 

Bowie and Prince are more the music of the grandparents of current kids than they are music of their parents. There is just a large generational gap between Baby Boomer Bowie and Gen Z kids today, just as their was a large gap between Gen X teens of the 80s and the Greatest Generation or the Lost Generation. 

Hendrix and Morrison aren't good examples because they died at their peaks. Those people always become more famous than if they had lived long enough to grow old and decline. Hendrix is still a more recognizable name to teens than Peter Townsend, Jimmy Page or Eric Clapton and those guys are still around making music.

MTV appears to have dumped their programming and is honoring Prince.  MTV is showing "Purple Rain", MTV2 is showing Prince videos and concert footage.  

BET Jams appears to have switched to all-Prince as well.

Eh, you'd be surprised at how culturally ignorant teenagers are.   Hell, The Simpsons aren't even really relevant with my students.   

And while you still see kids wearing Nirvana t shirts very, very few kids know the Dave Grohl/Foo Fighters connection.
