It's not really silent when you do it in a way that grabs as much attention as possible.

I don't think his protest is un-American anyway. I just don't think it's sincere.  I think he's a selfish, petulant jackass that wants to be traded and he's piggy-backing this issue.  I've always though he was a selfish, petulant jackass though so that part hasn't changed much.
Wait, you mean that when we protest we need to stay as invisible as possible in the process?  The whole point of protesting is to point attention to the issue.

Picketing for higher wages in your living room isn't going to do anything.

It does not make the arguments good either.  Just calling it shameless marketing is not really an argument against.  For the marketing to be successful, wouldn't people have to like it?  They play it because patriotism sells.  Again, there are no real good arguments against.  This is a free country and sports team do it because it is a tradition most people like.
You're apparently an easy mark.

i hate protests brohans but i just do not know how to show it take that to the mitchhedbrohan bank bromigos

One could actually argue that he did it in a way that grabbed as little attention as possible.  In fact he's done it before at least once (earlier in the preseason) and nobody noticed. It only came to people's attention because a reporter noticed he wasn't standing and asked him about it in a postgame interview.

Just out of curiosity- what facts led you to conclude that he did this in a way that grabbed as much attention as possible?
You can argue that I suppose.  I think it's a pretty poor argument, but I'm willing to have it if you think his intention was to actually grab as little attention as possible.

Timing and impressions from seeing him speak in Bay Area media.  The BLM movement is big in the Bay Area and has been for the last three years.  He times his big protest just as he gets relegated to back-up and his contract becomes an issue.  It could just be a huge coincidence, but I don't think so.

I was just pointing out that your description was inaccurate.  He can protest however he wants.

Without context I have no idea.
During the height of our military action in Iraq I often sat silently during the anthem while attending NFL and MLB games.  I was pissed and offended by our governments actions so I chose a course of protest.

Now that you have context, was I unpatriotic?

As Sam Borden points out in the Times, national anthems are not typically played before sporting events in other leagues around the world.  It is a pretty uniquely American thing that appears to have started with baseball and was thus already an American sporting tradition by the time the other major sports leagues were started.
First started playing SSB during the 7th-inning stretch at the World Series about a 100 years ago.  Was a 7th-inning stretch staple for a while.  Then moved to pregame a few times a year: Opening Day, July 4, World Series.   During World War II became a pregame song before every game to show support during the war, but didn't scale it back after WWII ended.

"Hey,  you over there!  The guy sitting down.  Why aren't you standing?  I need to know so I can decide if you're patriotic enough."
"I'm sorry, was I making too much noise while sitting silently?"

And the Anthem is not a "celebration" of the people who have died defending our rights etc.

I think the word you're looking for is "tribute".
But what if it was a Lee Greenwood tribute band doing a performance of the national anthem? Just for example, say it was my Lee Greenwood tribute band called Gumby's Excited.

After speaking with seven anonymous NFL front office members, Bleacher Report's Mike Freeman came away with the opinion that teams "truly, truly hate" Colin Kaepernick, and he may never play another down in the league.

"I don't want him anywhere near my team," one front office executive said. "He's a traitor." Another team executive said, "He has no respect for our country. [Expletive] that guy." And according to one GM, "In my career, I have never seen a guy so hated by front office guys as Kaepernick." One executive said he'd rather resign than sign Kap. Freeman believes '90-95 percent' of teams feel this way, and he thinks it's possible Kap will be blackballed once/if he's cut by the 49ers.

Those simpletons said the same thing about Michael Vick, who did something much, much worse than keeping his ### sealed to a seat during a song.

Gee, you've once again hit on what is most important about this issue. Well, second most important. The really most important thing is how many FFAers agree with the meathead OP.

(Don't hit me, FC!)

Good lord.  I'm pretty sure I've told this story before...

My sister's mother-in-law, while being a rather sweet woman, isn't the sharpest bayonet in the charge.   She's also very conservative due to her redneck upbringing.

Many years ago we were all at my sister's house watching a football game and MIL got mad at me because I was talking, in the other room, while that Lee Greenwood hunk of #### was playing on the TV.  She wasn't mad because she couldn't hear it.  She was mad because I was being disrespectful like it was the actual anthem.

Hey I just report the news as I read it...Apparently this is a much bigger deal within the NFL than most think....

This is the FFA Conservatives' version of "many people are saying this." You guys have this shtick down cold, I'll give you that.

The NFL deserves our eternal scorn.

What's gonna happen is he'll get cut and some absolutely desperate playoff-level team (like the Cardinals when Palmer tore his ACL) will call him up.  Fans won't give a #### if he helps them win.

Even if each of the 7 anonymous front office members were representative of one individual NFL team, that would make up less than 25% of the league.

And I'm proud to be an American where at least I know I'm free.
And I won't forget the men who died, who gave that right to me.
And I'd gladly stand up sit down next to you and defend her still today.
‘Cause there ain't no doubt I love this land God bless the U.S.A.

Definitely sounds better when singing STAND UP

Maybe if it were Peyton Manning or Aaron Rodgers....but it is Colin Kaepernick..the suck

Yes.  A celebration of what they fought for and a tribute to their memory.  Did the find the wording confusing?  Are you under the impression that people sing the anthem to celebrate war and death?

The NFL exists to make money.  Alienating a large part of you fan base for a back-up QB is a stupid financial decision.

He was smart enough to apologize and quit doing it.  Maybe Kaepernick will do the same.

Kaepernick chose to protest in a manner that dragged his entire team into a political mess.  Why would a team want a constant distraction like that?

Now I'm really rooting for him football-wise.

i especially like "and the millions unchained who their birthright hath gained" and "No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave"

why don't we sing the whole thing? that would be the only way to truly show respect for America. cutting it short is worse than interrupting your grandmother during dinner prayer.

you all should be ashamed

I like how when conservatives complain about something they don't like about the country it's because they love it so much and when liberals do it, it's because they hate it so much.

he timed it so that his failing career would be completely extinguished? on purpose?  brilliant move

Seems like a lot of anger from the left in here.  Keep up the hate!

You're kind of ducking my question here. Perhaps I didn't phrase it well.  Lemme try again:

You said he did this "in a way that grabs as much attention as possible."  How can you square that with the fact that he didn't tell anyone he was doing it and didn't say a word when nobody noticed it earlier in the postseason?  Those facts seem to completely disprove your statement.

The pushback from traditionalists isn't what's important. There's always pushback against those lobbying for change. The important thing is that the conversation is being advanced and new people are being exposed to new ideas about old habits. Sometimes that results in change, sometimes not. But change rarely happens without an uncomfortable conversation (like this one) starting it.

Seems a bit ironic to me that an organization that only exists to make money and could care less about patriotism is worried about alienating a large portion of its fan base.

I'm gonna try to poison the NFL's well by pointing out to everyone what a scam their little "salute to the troops" is. Maybe one day people won't fall for it.

I'm ok with this......I won't change but the conversation is good...Nice job...

I couldn't really care less what Colin Kaepernick does or doesn't do during the national anthem.  He's always been a doosh in my eyes, well before his stand to sit.

What's funny though, is he is protesting the same flag that allows him the freedom to protest in the first place.
