QB Aaron Rodgers, PIT (4 Viewers)

As usual, we have to be patient and wait for the details.  This could be another 1 year deal, a one-year-and-trade deal like last year, or something else.

What a huge, all-in play for the Packers. 😳 Very anti-Ted Thompson.  I subscribe more to his style of team building in the Green Bay market (with a bit more free agency and trades than he did) but I can't blame the organization for taking the big swing at another Super Bowl over the next four seasons.

May be some lean times for the Packers as soon as 2026 or if/when Rodgers suffers an injury or his play on the field dips.  Start the clock on Mark Murphy stepping down for "an opportunity too good to pass up" in 2025.

Horrendous. Can’t wait for him to complain when packers can’t sign other players like Davante.

Packers had chance to jump start rebuild and made things even worse.

Happy he's back since it's a QB driven league and Love stinks.  Wish he would've taken a more team friendly deal but whatever.  Shows that being the highest paid player was truly important to Rodgers.

Maybe. Could have done a Howie Roseman thing and add like 4 'dead' years to the deal to spread the hit out.

FWIW,

Replies don’t seem to be coming up at the minute, but under Ian Rapoport’s tweet breaking the news Pat McAfee straight up said the reported contract is false.

McAfee is tight with Rodgers and talked with him this morning where Rodgers confirmed he is going back to GB, but McAfee is saying his “source” (lol) has said that the reported deal is false and is more team friendly.

So will be interesting to see what the actual numbers are.

Umm...him restructuring with a longer term deal (we don't know the numbers yet...McAfee saying the Rappaport numbers are not accurate)...but him doing that makes it more manageable to sign Davante.

Maybe...or that is what the team was thinking they had to do to get him back.  Probably a bit of both...he wants the security and being "the guy" with the big contract...they want to make sure they get him back with maybe some more certainty for a few years.

And the cap is expected to increase significantly in the coming years as revenues from the new TV contract and gambling come rolling in, which will still allow them plenty of flexibility. Shoot, Rams just paid ~45mm (20mm Stafford/~25mm Goff) to the QB position last year on a 187mm cap and won the Super Bowl. Rodgers was/is the Pack's best chance to win a SB and they went for it, smart move with not so many power teams in the NFC right now.

I'm gonna guess the full "guaranteed amount" isn't money immediately into Rodgers' bank account right now.  Probably more of a total money guaranteed each year.  That way the Packers don't get hosed if ARod decides to retire a year, or two, from now.

Right...so if the numbers are correct (and seems there is some question about that)...even the $50 million per average would be quite a bit lower % of the cap than some are claiming.

Best to wait for the real journalists to report the deal terms over the coming weeks. It could be a team-friendly deal.

Best analogy I have heard about Rodgers...builds on what Barkley had said.

The Packers are the average guy...and they outkicked their coverage with one of the hottest women (Rodgers part in this analogy).  Super high maintenance and you have to put up with a lot of stuff...but you reap the benefits of having that hot woman with you.

But it's WI, home of the beer goggles.  They don't need the hottest chick with the amount of alcohol that is drank.

Yeah, but they got only one blue dot from him, and that was several years ago.

Geez, Rodgers must be so mad his news was upstaged by Wilson. He's going to need to do something to fix that.
"Aaron Rodgers tweeted, "I will be playing with the @packers next year, however, reports about me signing a contract are inaccurate."

That's a real quote.

I had a feeling this was coming, either from him or one of his media lackeys like MacAfee. He's going to bristle at the notion his contract handcuffs the team, due to the inevitable contrast with Brady.  This is what drives this guy. He wants the "respect" of the biggest contract ever, but also wants the fans to admire him for being loyal and not just doing it for the money.

In that case he should be more like Brady and sign deals that give his team the best chance to win.

I'm sure Pack fans love him.  I don't have much patience for him anymore after all the drama and the attitude.    I don't have any doubtsthat it IS all about the money.   The word "respect", when mentioned in contract discussions, seldom has anything to do with respect.    And, if he wants real respect, he'll need to stop complaining about the talent around him and win when it counts

Reminds me of management / labour contract negotiations.

Labour: "We want better working conditions, job security, benefits and education programs".

Management: "How about another $2 / hour?"

Labour: "Done."

The proof will be in the pudding. I would not be surprised if this is another 1 year deal with an out next Spring and a few void years on the back end.  As usual, Andrew Brandt is worth following as the details come out over the next few weeks or so.

Lingering issue re Aaron/Packers: All reports last year had him getting an opt-out after 2022 where he could be a FA and pick his team. Is that still in there? If so, he would be the most valuable FA in NFL history, get way past $50M/year. If not, what a massive win for GB.

Rodgers feeling even better now with Mack out of the division.  Russel Wilson now gets to be chased by Bosa and Mack twice a year.  Seems Rodgers did well in that...

The Aaron Rodgers contract has a new-money average of $61.7 million per year
Posted by Mike Florio on March 15, 2022, 10:19 AM EDT

To the extent that Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers had wanted to create the impression that he wasn’t being a sweaty pig at the financial trough, it didn’t work.

The new deal finally signed by Rodgers reportedly pays out $150 million over the next three years. Given that the final two years of the four-year extension (five-year contract) are dummy years for cap purposes, and in light of the fact that he was due to earn $26.47 million in 2022, the deal pays out $123.53 million in so-called “new money.” This translates to a new-money average of $61.7 million.

That shoves the current bar for quarterbacks from $45 million by $16.7 million.

It remains to be seen whether that’s how the money will be paid. Rodgers gets roughly $41 million this year, most of which surely will come in the form of a signing bonus. Next year, he has a gigantic $58.3 million option bonus.

We still need to study the entire document to understand whether it’s a one-, two-, or three-year commitment by player and/or team. Rodgers quite possibly has the power to retire or request a trade after each season. If he doesn’t have that power, he failed to maximize his leverage.

Then again, with a new-money average of nearly $62 million, it’s fair to say he maximized his leverage.

Pretty much anytime someone tries to explain, "It's really NOT about the money" it sounds to me like someone explaining, "I'm the LEAST racist person you'll ever meet. No, REALLY!".

If it were true than why would you feel the need to explain this to me? I'm on the players side in most of these things and earned the money. Fine. Just don't explain for the past year that none of this is about money if a new contract wipes everything away. Oh, and I noticed he got his contract and Davante Adams might be forced to play on the franchise tag at some point this year if nothing changes. But Rodgers got his contract bump so all that virtue signaling about how upset he was teammates were treated unfairly in the past has pretty much been exposed at pure BS.

I really wonder when players will eventually figure out that winning will bring them the money that can be left on the table for the contract.  Through endorsements all of that money can be made up while winning especially if the player is personable for commercials.

I do understand the ego part as when these guys have that much money the ego is that they are the "highest paid" etc.  Stuff the ego and start winning......then the ego can be based on things that actually matter.

I wonder when a QB gets so powerful he gets 1%, 5%, etc of franchise OWNERSHIP when signing one of these deals. It would be interesting how that played itself out in the salary cap. We have seen/heard former players try to get into ownership before.

Rodgers and the Packers at this stage of his career is probably a bad example. It might be more interesting in a Bengals situation where you have a young franchise QB and a team that may not want to play whatever fair market value is at that time to retain him for the rest of his career.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports Aaron Rodgers "knew Davante Adams would never play for the Packers again" before negotiating his contract.

After the shock of the trade started to dissipate, it was understandable to question how Rodgers felt about his best -- and arguably only -- receiving weapon traded away, but this report along with others suggests Rodgers has accepted the situation even if he is not okay with it. For Rodgers, the question turns to who he will be throwing to in 2022. Allen Lazard and Randall Cobb are back, and perhaps Marquez Valdes-Scantling will re-sign in the wake of this news. Even so, it would be smart for the Packers to use their newfound first-round pick on one of a talented group of draft-eligible receivers.

I think the article summary misstates Rodgers’ comments somewhat. “Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers said he was "surprised" by the team trading former receiver Davante Adams this offseason.” He didn’t say this. I heard his comments to mean he was surprised Adams chose the Raiders despite the Packers’ competitive offer. It’s hard to view Adams’ decision as anything other than a rejection of Rodgers in favor of Carr. I’m sure that did surprise him. It was a very surprising decision.
