QB Aaron Rodgers, PIT (7 Viewers)

Aaron Rodgers is a stud and has won the MVP 2 of the last 3 years

So he wants to sit in silence to contemplate a big decision. The horror!
For real, people are being kind of unfair to him. It'd be nice if people could just let him play, maybe stop being so judge-y.

New York sports media sounds like a great fit, just excellent.

Wow.
Hot take from Chase that many won't agree with.

Aaron Rodgers in 2023 will be 2.5 years older than Matt Ryan was this season. Other than pretending that Rodgers is Tom Brady, I don’t know why so many people seem confident that Rodgers is going to be a good QB next year, much less in 2024. You basically pray he has 1 year left.
I agree with that take wholeheartedly.

Likewise. Certainly he's defying the odds, both as to his health and production, and I think many if not most observers would say he's lost a step or 3. Many more missed throws and missed opportunities than we're used to seeing. But even with a broken thumb and playing at 80% or so at most from his peak, he's still better than most. I think the Packers decided he was down to his last year or so in 2020 and then he reeled off two straight MVPs. But agree that anyone taking on that contract and the sideshow that comes with it is praying to the football gods for one more good season.
good post but I think the bold print is why you take a chance on him. he has no one to throw to , no TE, no WRs worth mentioning outside of maybe Watson, and that is why there were so many missed opportunities/drops/ints/incomplete passes. GB has killed Rodgers slowly, year after year, with a continually lousy defense, aging offensive line, and no WRs outside of D. Adams. if you put Rodgers on TB he would absolutely kill it with those WRs. put him on the jets and he'll do really well. it's like the plight of danny dimes, he has no star WR to pass to, nothing but a bunch of decent players who might not even make it off the practice squad on other teams. it's amazing what a good group of WRs does to a QB. you think Jalen Hurts would have been so good this seasons without Brown and Smith? nope.
on another note I'm not sure that Rodgers didn't just sabotage the season on his own. seems to me he's been battling with GB front office for the better part of the last decade. a change of venue would rejuvenate him beyond belief. put him on the vikings and he'll win the MVP and probably go to the SB again. they're not getting anywhere with Cap't Kirk , never will.
If I'm the Jets I'm seriously considering a trade offer for Rodgers. He might also do well in LV, Raiders have talent and a pass-happy coach. just imagine Rodgers on the Commandos, with those WRs and RBs. danny snyder is a deal maker it makes sense for them to throw their hat in the ring for Rodgers.

If he doesn't want to hear comments on it, he could have always just, I dunno, done it without telling the world about it on a show? He announces this kind of crap for exactly the reason you are complaining about, because it gets him talked about. It's obviously exactly what he wanted.

This again?

Why did Rodgers re-sign with the Packers if he wanted to sabotage them?
Well...wouldn't the best sabotage be signing a deal making it really hard on them cap wise if he were to retire or demand a trade or even if he plays? I mean, that is on them for sure, but the structuring of his contracts lately was just pushing the pain off as long as they could.

Im also not saying he was trying to sabotage anyway...just saying, their contracts with him will have some bad consequences eventually. We saw it somewhat last year with not being able to retain Adams. They will have cap issues keeping people and it will be tough if Love ever does take over as they will have a couple lean cap years due to putting off $$$s so long.

Really? Reports were that GB offered Adams more money than he got from Oakland.I thought it came down to Adams wanted to go to the west coast and play with Carr

ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reports the Jets have inquired with the Packers about Aaron Rodgers' availability.

This has felt like an inevitable match on one side -- the question at this point that we don't know the answer to is how strongly Rodgers feels about joining the Jets. It's an obvious move for a New York offensive outfit that was held back by their quarterback, and for the second straight offseason the Nathaniel Hackett hirer has been rumored to be into Rodgers. Does Rodgers want to move to New York? We'll surely hear more after his Darkness Retreat.

Schefter really should just be legally barred from ever reporting on Aaron Rodgers.

Aaron Rodgers on the Pat McAfee Show (2/14/23):

I have no problem with Ian Rappaport, Schefter- I think they’re really good at their jobs. When it comes to me, they don’t know ****. They really don’t. They don’t have people in my inner circle who are sources, I can promise you that. Anybody who would talk to them is not in my inner circle. It’s that simple

This guy seems sensitive and he hasn't been a team first player maybe ever. Good luck to the Raiders or whoever gets this guy that seems to be only motivated by pissing people off, not really a chip on his shoulder per se IMO, more like a jerk that just wants payback or to talk down to people I dunno. Very weird guy.

He was on the Pat McAfee Show today? I thought he was going into 4 days of darkness/isolation to figure out his future??

He closed his eyes the whole time.

Maybe he meant he was gonna listen to THIS for 4 days.

Agree he marches to the beat of a different drummer. I don't think I'd like the guy if I met him, but have immensely enjoyed watching him play football the past 15 years. Don't forget that Schefter tweeted an unsourced rumor that sounded like fact reporting on the morning of the draft two years ago. We had multiple threads and polls on this board speculating over Rodgers' future. Everyone was convinced he was retiring or sitting out to force his way off the team. Media was following his every move on vacation. But it was never the case that he wanted to move, sit out or retire. The next day on the radio Schefty answered the first question put to him by saying his tweet was based on essentially a gut feeling and an "accumulation of information" - not on any actual knowledge. I think Rodgers' comment today is quite level-headed. A different player or person might have been a bit more aggressive in his comments under these circumstances.

I feel ya there. Just seems WAY too invested in personal spats/splitting hairs over people speculating his future. Honestly I think if the cameras are off and he doesn't have the attention he has now, he might be an OK guy to drink gluten free zero calorie beer with.

If Carr signs with the Jets, where is ARod going?
Raiders are the Vegas favorite

That seems like a poor decision considering they might be the worst team in the afc west even with him, but I guess that’s possible. Panthers? Promising defense at least with a few weapons in the worst division in the league.
I'm just relaying info haha. One would think the Davante Adams relationship would be something he likes, but again, weird weird guy. Who really knows what his priorities are, other than trolling people haha.

Yes, that was getting a ton of money recently.
What are your thoughts? I got some Packers people I work with, they are kinda on the same page, over it all, but also want to get a decent compensation.
One of my best friends is also a Raiders fan so he is hoping for that of course.

I would probably be over him at this point. You don't want to be stuck without both him AND Love at the same time.

I listened to the entire 51 minute podcast earlier today so you don’t have to. I’m a big fan of McGinn but would warn anyone reading a summary of his comments to take it with a massive grain of salt. He’s clearly obsessed and has a major axe to grind with Rodgers. He talks about a source for this but uses some cagey words and admits it’s also just his gut feeling. He goes through every single season ending game and details how poorly Rodgers played (other than the superbowl win which he says was Rodgers best game and one of the best ever superbowl QB performances.) Just as an example, he derisIvely mocks the suggestion that Rodgers is a first ballot HoF player. He also says if Rodgers comes back and collects the $60m first day cash he would still be the backup to Love this season. Bob is 70 years old, long retired and hasn’t been a credentialed beat reporter for probably at least a decade.

wonder how much Rodgers flakiness might suppress his value, like does a team really want to fork over a bunch of draft capital for one year of Rodgers?

I don't think too much. Once you get to ranking QBs and you are in the 9-15 range, you see quickly how fast the talent at the position dries up. New GM's, new coached want to make a splash, etc. Gonna guess there will be at least 2-3 teams at minimum inquiring about "whats it gonna cost" and thats all you need to get good value. He's a weirdo, but so is Brady to a degree, and he just demonstrated how long you can really play in this league at the position if you "really want to" if you still got the talent, etc.

Brady was a free agent though. I don't doubt Rodgers could play several more years if he wanted to, but doesn't seem like he does. Maybe a team like the Jets would give up their first rounder but can't see anyone give up too much more than that. Maybe if they were somehow able to get some type of commitment from Rodgers.

They’ll gloss over everything for “MVP” on the resume.

They’ll believe “I’m the one that can fix him!”

He very well might deliver an MVP season. Or he could be a complete flake. The entire spectrum of possibilities is on the table.

I think that's an issue along with Rodgers buy-in, as in will he put in work with his new teammates during the off-season. How team(s) feel about that, how Rodgers answers that question, I think will have a huge bearing on his market price.

Jets and Raiders should be all over him. As they should be. The guy is ridiculously good, like him or not.

Funny, how personality is such a huge deal with people's opinion of him. While the same folks will fawn over a guy like Tiger Woods, who is a douche like no other (tampon joke!). But true.

And yes, one is an individual sport, and the other a team sport, but still, it is at the very least, amusing.

I don't think anyone is questioning his talent, but his commitment to the work it takes to go to a new team and how many seasons he's going to play.

I don't think the flakiness is a concern at all. The NFL has ignored a lot (crimes, personality, etc.) if the talent is there. All the rest just makes for good copy and click bait.

As far as the one year of Rodgers concern, that can easily be overcome by a trade package that includes conditional picks if Rodgers plays longer and how well he plays.

And as CletiusMaximus pointed out above, McGinn seems to have an axe to grind with Rodgers. I'm a big fan of McGinn as well and his draft series are great. But when he doesn't like someone it's pretty apparent. And he doesn't give any source other than his gut feeling. He made very similar comments regarding Rodgers future two years ago. I can see the Packer's moving on from Rodgers this year, but I don't put a lot of stock in the McGinn story.

I didn’t think he needed fixing.

my comment on flakiness is only in relation to how long he plays and his commitment, and i don't think there's ever been a trade in nfl history that was related to how many seasons or how well someone plays, % of playing time yes but not those things.

McGinn used to be great. He had a decent network of scouts where he got most of his information. Problem is, I think most have moved on and he doesn't have the sources he once did. While he has always been pretty critical...lately it almost seems as if he is just angry and yeah has an axe to grind with Rodgers from very early on. Not sure the last time he got something right.

I’m seeing a crowd of reporters waiting outside of Rodgers dark room chambers, waiting for him to emerge, so they can be the first to report his decision. Only, when the door opens, Rodgers isn’t there. Everyone is befuddled searching the room. Rodgers has disappeared. The next ten years, people claim to have seen him in a Arizona Denny’s, or working on a pipeline in the gulf coast. In 20 years, Finn Wolfhard plays Rodgers in the movie.
