I'm fully aware Ben Johnson chose the Bears because of Caleb, and have been intrigued about how the offense will be built around a QB that is so different from Goff. Ben Johnson's offense is 100% predicated on outsmarting the defense. Get the defense keying on the run, and then hit them deep with play action. Get the defense going right and then hit the tight end or Jameson Wiliiams on the left. And Goff's game was perfect for this mental chess match. Williams was a rookie playing behind a terrible offensive line, but he didn't show the propensity to read defenses nor get the ball out on time. He either has to greatly improve in that regard, or Ben Johnson has to run a different offense.

He had problems with deep balls even when he had time in the pocket. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little concerned by that, not by one day of training camp though.

Caleb has a ton of talent. There is a lot of pressure being drafted number one overall to a franchise historically starving for a decent passing quarterback. I imagine the urge to make things happen is great and maybe that impacted his play. He was left for dead with the coaching staff he was born into. Whether he can overcome these things, I have no idea. You kind of have to be a little of a nut job to be great at this position these days. Living/breathing football, shutting out the noise, being able to take criticism to heart, bouncing back from adversity, etc. I do not know if he has that in him or not. I think Ben Johnson has a tougher challenge than what it appears on paper. A lot of it will boil down to Caleb’s mental makeup imo.

It certainly should be a reasonable goal with the weapons in place. They added oline help as well (finally). However, you still have a rookie QB who is now on his third OC in less than two years. Cohesion, rookie skill players, young QB, all new coaching staff and expectations, etc. I am not burying Caleb as his play in college was at times mesmerizing. I trust Ben will provide the relationship and guidance needed to at least guide him on what to watch with film and instruct him accordingly (apparently not done with the last staff). I don’t say this in a negative way, but Caleb seems like a tough read. I am not sure what he brings mentally (if negative, that can change and progress as well). There was a clip I recently watched deep throws not under pressure (wish I could remember where I saw, heck…might be in this thread) and he missed a lot of opportunities. Bad coaching, too much pressure…who knows. He has a truck full of talent, it will be interesting to see how he responds to a better structure (which I am confident Ben will provide).

I am starting to worry he's got more Johnny Manziel than he does Patrick Mahomes. His college tape is unreal. The plays he made were repeatedly some of the most jaw dropping stuff I've seen. Same boat. I have faith in Ben and I think the process Breer was talking about makes sense. Ben is a smart guy and he needs to learn more about who Caleb is and what he can do. It's going to take time for that relationship to develop.

The idea of throwing 100 different things at Caleb to see where he excels and where he shrinks is great to build the foundation. Ben can now design the early part of year 1 around what Caleb already does well and build on it from there. Its the type of outside the box thinking that made Ben a top hire.

No, the fact that he paints his nails is well established. His mother, I believe did it as her job and it was a bonding thing between them since he was a child.

Honestly, the why of it shouldn't matter. It shouldn't even be a topic of discussion because it's entirely irrelevant.
