As a Lions homer, even bigger for me is Chicago won't be running the ball behind Penei Sewell. Frank Ragnow, and Taylor Decker. And Goff is the polar opposite of Willams. Goff is not mobile. He relies on checking to the right play, making the right read, getting the ball out on time, and making a decisive/accurate throw. Goff beats your with his mind, which is not Williams' game at all. I'm not saying Ben Johnson can't build a great offense, but it will have to be different, because the QBs are totally different.I'm the only guy who wonders how smart Ben Johnson is without ARSB. LaPorta, Gibbs, and Jameson?
Ben Johnson picked Caleb and the Bears over all the other offers out there. Caleb not being able to do what Goff is doing, that seems really low on my list of concerns. I am Bears fan however, so the goggles could be blinding me.As a Lions homer, even bigger for me is Chicago won't be running the ball behind Penei Sewell. Frank Ragnow, and Taylor Decker. I'm fully aware Ben Johnson chose the Bears because of Caleb, and have been intrigued about how the offense will be built around a QB that is so different from Goff. Ben Johnson's offense is 100% predicated on outsmarting the defense. Get the defense keying on the run, and then hit them deep with play action. Get the defense going right and then hit the tight end or Jameson Wiliiams on the left. And Goff's game was perfect for this mental chess match. Williams was a rookie playing behind a terrible offensive line, but he didn't show the propensity to read defenses nor get the ball out on time. He either has to greatly improve in that regard, or Ben Johnson has to run a different offense.Ben Johnson picked Caleb and the Bears over all the other offers out there. It's very easy to believe because perpetually, The Bears still suck.
That would be a franchise record for Bears passing yards -- kind of hard to believe they have never had a 4,000 yard season.
Honestly, we're going to know either way about him this year. They did this offseason what they should have done last year: build the offensive line and go from there. He has no excuses, all the pieces are there.Early news out of camp is that Caleb didn't look his best on day 1. The speculation is that he is trying to impress Ben Johnson with what he can do, but not doing what he should be doing with the ball. Hopefully it's just growing pains, but the theme seems consistent with what Caleb does. He still had plenty of great throws, so nothing to worry about yet.

What we're hearing out of camp is exactly what I saw last year: he's having problems making the 'easy' throws. Even when he wasn’t pressured, he was terrible completing even a 7 yard slant across the middle.
I've already closed the book on Richardson. Are you talking about Caleb Williams or Anthony Richardson?Honestly, we're going to know either way about him this year. I'm willing to chalk up last year for Caleb as him getting happy feet because he was getting murdered by that terrible o-line. That shouldn't be a problem this year.
It certainly should be a reasonable goal with the weapons in place. They added oline help as well (finally). However, you still have a rookie QB who is now on his third OC in less than two years. Cohesion, rookie skill players, young QB, all new coaching staff and expectations, etc. I am not burying Caleb as his play in college was at times mesmerizing. I trust Ben will provide the relationship and guidance needed to at least guide him on what to watch with film and instruct him accordingly (apparently not done with the last staff). I don’t say this in a negative way, but Caleb seems like a tough read. I am not sure what he brings mentally (if negative, that can change and progress as well). There was a clip I recently watched deep throws not under pressure (wish I could remember where I saw, heck…might be in this thread) and he missed a lot of opportunities. Bad coaching, too much pressure…who knows. He has a truck full of talent, it will be interesting to see how he responds to a better structure (which I am confident Ben will provide). Will Caleb Williams break the Bears single season passing yards record this year? Or in 2026?
Erik Kramer - 3838 yards in 1995. 30 year old "record"
What is the line? What does Vegas have Williams at for 2025? Looks like +/-3550.5 and as always that seems super reasonable. I wonder what odds I'd get if I said I think he gets to 4000? Seems doable.

I watched a sequence that talked about Ben & Co intentionally overloading Caleb to find his breaking point. Apparently they are in the process of paring down the playbook to get to a point where he's comfortable. Seems like an interesting concept, but I trust in Ben right now.@JAYChi_Bears

I get the feeling that how poorly coached he was last year that Caleb is almost a rookie again this year. He has the talent, but there will be another large learning curve this year in a new offense and being actually coached this year.I watched a sequence that talked about Ben & Co intentionally overloading Caleb to find his breaking point. For sure. There will be some growing pains this season along with breaking some poor habits started last season and installing a fresh offense. I do expect a 4000 yard season from Caleb, however.I get the feeling that how poorly coached he was last year that Caleb is almost a rookie again this year. I am starting to worry he's got more Johnny Manziel than he does Patrick Mahomes. His college tape is unreal. The plays he made were repeatedly some of the most jaw dropping stuff I've seen. However, I am still not sure I ever saw him really just run an offense consistently. How that plays out over his NFL career, I don't know.I’ll bury Caleb. To my untrained eye, he just doesn’t have “it”. And I don’t think he ever will. He’s firmly on my ‘do not draft’ list.
Another in a long line of USC QBs who don’t pan out in the NFL.
I wouldn't be surprised if it happens. The Bears start off Chiefs, Vikings, Lions, then Cowboys, Raiders, Commanders. 2-4 is not unlikely and and 1-5 would not be out of the realm of possibility either. Most people considered Jared Goff to be a broken, stop-gap QB who couldn't handle pressure up the middle when he showed up in Detroit as what was widely viewed as a throw in salary cap piece in the Stafford trade. Then I keep thinking about how the Lions opened 1-6 in Ben Johnson's first season as OC, before finishing with an 8-2 run. That was a remarkable bit of coaching by Johnson and team management by Dan Campbell.
Dan Campbell isn't there to be a North Star for everyone to focus on; I wonder how Ben, Caleb, the team and fans will respond if the Bears open 1-6 this season.

Seriously. When has there been a more scrutinized 2nd yr QB?
Just get away. Everyone. Let the kid grow up and learn without the HEAT.
The "guy" wears makeup and women's clothing. I'm not sure he has the mental makeup (see what I did there?) to absorb all the ridicule the keyboard bullies will constantly throw his way. Maybe he does, I don't know. I didn't like him coming out of college. I took over a dynasty team that had him on it and just traded him for Purdy, Doubs, and a 2026 3rd (salary cap league and I needed WR badly). I just don't believe in his mental toughness. No one questions his physical tools, at least no one credible, but the mental makeup needs to be there and I'm not sure Caleb has it.
Particularly because he is starting to look like a player who was under coached for his entire career and made it on raw talent. He also may need a lot of work on a the fundamental aspects of his game.

Same boat. I have faith in Ben and I think the process Breer was talking about makes sense. Ben is a smart guy and he needs to learn more about who Caleb is and what he can do.
