QB Cam Newton, Retired (3 Viewers)

BREAKING . . .

STATEMENT FROM THE NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS

"On Saturday, Cam Newton traveled to a Club-approved medical appointment that required him to leave the New England area. He received daily Covid tests, which were all negative. Due to a misunderstanding about tests conducted away from NFL facilities, and as required by the NFL-NFLPA protocols, Cam will be subject to the five-day entry cadence process before returning to the facility. Cam will continue participating virtually in team activities and return to the club facility on Thursday, August 26."

No Cam at practice today (and for the next few days).

Dark Lord of the Hood: "Muahahahaha..."

Isn't that covid testing only for unvaccinated players?  Didn't the dummy get vaccinated?

Well, he already had covid last year. So you would think his immune system has antibody and is stronger against covid then those of us that are vaccinated and never got covid. So it seems some players should have to take antibody test and once proven it should count for vaccination. But this is just my thoughts and I am not a virus expert.

Interesting feedback from some of the players with Cam out. The commentary has basically been that the players view it like an injury and next man up until Cam gets back. That basically is the mindset that Jones is a fill in until Newton gets back.

The media, of course, is looking at it that Jones will leap frog Newton and has clear sailing to be the starter. Jones didn't do so great running the show yesterday. BB acknowledged today that this was an opportunity for Mac. IMO, Jones would have to play lights out with the starters to make things more of a competition. Yesterday's performance was far from that.

Jones get two joint practices with the Giants before Cam returns. The two teams play on Sunday, so it will be interesting to see who plays in the actual game. Even then, who knows how much each guy would play and whether playing a lot is a good thing or a bad thing.

It would be great to see Jones playing with and against the first team players.

I think Anarchy is afraid the rookie might overtake his beloved Newton.
LOL. I have said all along I think they never should have re-signed Newton, he's washed up, and they should start Jones. But yeah, one interpretation of that is I am a Newton fan boy.

Greg Bedard commented about Mac playing with the starters: We got a glimpse of the Patriots future at QB. But we did not get a look at the Patriots QB of the present. He went on to describe how Jones took sacks, missed open receivers, his defenders in the hands, how he was flustered, and that overall he did not look like he did playing with the second offense and the second defense.

“Mac Jones with two straight drives in team drills, ends each one with a beautiful TD pass. Comes off the field to high-fives from his teammates and a fist bump from McDaniels. You can see the confidence growing all around”

And he is back to doing well, in practice. You should be happier now knowing he is improving in practice.

I'm happy when anyone does well. We will have to see if BB leaves Mac with the starters once Cam returns. I doubt that will happen, but that's TBA.

I have said all along if they really wanted Mac to be the starter, they could have had him practicing with the starters since he was drafted. But they didn't. If Cam didn't have a few days off, I doubt we would have seen Jones with the starters very much (if at all). SO FAR (with emphasis) BB hasn't played it like he was preparing to move on from Cam. Maybe he's peeved enough at Cam to give Jones more time with the starters. Again, we'll see how things play out through the game on Sunday.

Mac said to have been 29-34 with 2 INT today . . . in a limited contact practice in shorts and shells. Certainly better overall than yesterday, but a lot less pressure than a full contact practice.

If my memory of the schedule is right, they will practice with the Giants tomorrow and Thursday. IIRC, Cam is eligible to return to practice on Thursday. We can see if the routine changes any on Thursday.

Evidently 30-37, two tds, two ints… one a deflected ball on a throw behind Olshevsky. Well, it is progress.

I hope you are not sad that Jones is making ground on Newton. 😁

I would much rather have Jones at QB. I'm not so sure that BB agrees. As mentioned several times previously, I think Mac has to be playing A+ ball with full command of the offense playing with the starters against the starters and Cam has to be playing D level football and looking as bad or worse than last year for Bill to make a move to Jones.

Lots of fans and media folks keep suggesting the only outcome is Jones steps in and plays great right off the bat . . . but what if he struggles and looks like an overwhelmed rookie like Darnold did. Then what? As of now, he really hasn't faced NFL competition on defense with real defensive schemes, play calling, and guys trying to tear his head off. Yeah, I get that he will have to have trial by fire at some point . . . but Bill hasn't really tried to put Jones in a sink or swim environment.

The eye test to me is that with Jones it looks a lot more like a Brady lead offense. With Cam, it’s only flourishing with curl routes. Not getting any sort of explosive plays. Not conducive to putting pressure on the opposing defense. I think with Jones, you can pressure the opposing defense. It looks obvious.

All I can offer is in practice Cam has been connecting on bombs with regularity. What we see in limited action on a drive or two in preseason games is probably 5% or less of what has been going on in training camp. Cam has looked much better in camp. He looked much better against PHI. Mac has looked good playing against back ups and scrubs. That's not to say he can't do well against better defenders . . . only he hasn't had much chance to play against starters much.

The good news for NE fans is they either roll out a better Cam Newton or they insert a first round QB. Either one will be an upgrade to what they had last year.

What the national media guys aren't accounting for is that the Patriots are very good at OL, RB, TE, DL, LB, DB, and ST. Certainly there are questions at QB and WR. But they check off way more boxes than they did last year, and IMO, they should be a much more competitive team this year. Early indications are the front 7 are blowing up blocking schemes and disrupting play calls, and if they can do that in the regular season, they could go back to being in the playoff hunt for the AFC. In this day and age, most top teams start with elite production at QB. NE is going to win with strengths in other areas and average / game management level production from QB. That probably won't be enough to advance far in the post season, but it should keep them in just about every game this year.

It will be interesting to see if the Giants go full strength / all starters in week 3 and if this gives any "live fire" data of Jones versus 1s.
Are you assuming they start Jones on Sunday? Cam will have been back at practice on Thursday. We have no idea what they were planning to do prior to the Cam-missing-practice story. Maybe they wanted to get a look at Jones with the ones. Maybe they wanted to hold out the ones altogether. Maybe they wanted to get a better look at the guys on the bubble. If Cam doesn't play, some will say he lost the starting job . . . others will say he cemented the starting job. It will be interesting to see if they look at the last pre-season game as the old Game 3 (all starters play the entire first half) or the old Game 4 of the preseason (most starters don’t even suit up).

Yes, Jones will start Sunday.

What’s interesting is there is definitely a line in the sand. Guys that weren’t in the league all want Jones. Guys that were in the league or in an NFL front office all say it’s Cam and that won’t change.

Have you listened to Zolak, Ted Johnson and Mike Flynn?

Not on this topic / not recently. Most of the local non-player reporters are big on Jones. I watched multiple ESPN shows the past few days with former players and front office guys and they were pretty consistent and confident that Cam will be the starter. Can’t say that I’ve searched out every opinion out there.

Every year we have a handful of heated debates over what coaches should do with personnel versus what they likely will do. It's interesting for awhile but in fantasy terms only the latter  really means anything.

Is this the same Ted Johnson who threw Belichick under the bus for concussions sustained in practice?  And now nurses from the teat of local sports media?  The input from marginal QBs is like hearing Chris Sims talk about QBs (see for example his recent interview about why Taysom Hill should start over Jameis Winston).

Less confrontationally, it seems the majority of "football insiders" see Cam as the lead horse.  In the end, that may or may not be a good thing.  Only time will tell.
