QB Kirk Cousins, ATL (3 Viewers)

Where will he go? Jefferson seems to be pulling the plug on his season so the vikings despite an easy schedule ahead will likely fall out of contention soon. I think Kirk will be traded this year as a rental. Where he goes depends on who gets hurt around the league. For instance if Purdy goes down to injury I don't think the 49ers would hesitate to bring in Cousins. They want the SB this year. Same with Philadelphia if Hurts goes down. By the end of the year Cousins may end up in a great situation.
Falcons? Good line, decent D, nice weapons.
And his wife is from Georgia...might be the only place he would waive his no trade clause...

I thought Cousins waived the no trade clause last year?

There is a very slim chance Cousins goes anywhere. JJ loves him + the Vikings need to lock up JJ long term = no trading Kirk.
agreed - Id be shocked if hes traded in season. After the season all bets are off but I still think the strong odds are Kirk stays this year and signs a new deal. Other options are just putrid

While Jefferson has said very positive things about Cousins I dont know how he feels about his future without Cousins.

It might matter to Jefferson a lot. It might not matter much to him at all.

If you have information that points to this either way please share that.

All I know is Jefferson and the Vikings negotiated for a contract extension this offseason but did not come to an agreement about that.

The timing of it being announced that they would table extension negotiations was very close to the season starting and I think a few days after the Vikings extended TJ Hockenson.

I dont know the reason they did not make a deal. Its always about money, but there may be other factors here. I dont know what those other things might be. I can only speculate.

Cousins is a free agent next season.

He wanted a extension. The Vikings did not give him one.

If Cousins becomes a free agent he will likely get a big contract in 2024 and if its not with the Vikings they will likely get a compensation pick, I would guess 3rd round pick.

So the Vikings would want more than a late 3rd round pick for Cousins.

If they are offered a trade worth more than this, they should consider doing that.

They can franchise tag him

Apparently they can not. https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profo...lause-vikings-cant-tag-kirk-cousins-next-year

They could. This has happened with Cousins a couple times before.

Thats the thing. Cousins wants a long term garunteed contract. The Vikings dont want to commit to him long term at this point of his career. They might be fine with a 1 year deal though and drafting a QBOTF.

Cousins doesnt want a new QB breathing down his neck either.. so their goals are not compatable.

Franchise tag could work, but they likely use that on Jefferson if they must use it over using it on Cousins.

Oh.

Well nevermind then.

That would be too much money anyways.

Thank you for this, I was unaware and had never heard of this circumstance before.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports Vikings QB Kirk Cousins will not waive his no-trade clause and will remain in Minnesota through the end of the season.

Cousins signed a one-year extension with the franchise that included a no-trade clause this offseason and appears intent on remaining in Minnesota through the end of the year. That would allow him the opportunity to renegotiate a new deal after the season. The report comes on the backs of an updated recovery timeline for alpha wide receiver Justin Jefferson, placing him out for the next 4-6 weeks. The 1-4 Vikings sit on the bottom of the NFC North.

Thanks.

I know the previos extension agreement did not include the no trade clause for Cousins, but I guess that was part of their new contract extension agreement

If SF would have traded for Cousins back in 2017 or 2018 like Kyle Shanahan originally wanted, I'm convinced they'd have a SB win by now.
While overall, the Shanahan/Lynch combo has worked well, there is/was a disconnect about the QB. Rumor was Shanahan didn't really want Jimmy because he wanted to wait for Cousins to be a FA the next season. Also rumor that he wasn't a Lance fan, yet they took him 3rd overall. Rumors of course but would love to be privy to the actual conversations on those moves.

Watching him sit on the cart knowing his achilles was jacked, just to support his team should tell everyone everything they need to know about Kirk. Heart breaking to watch. Not only does he seem like one of the truly good guys in the sport, he was playing some of the best football of his career. I've been critical of his play at times, but I'm not sure how anyone could root against him. The NFL could use a few more players just like him.

"Buzz is that it will take $90 million guaranteed for two years"
Andrew Brandt has a cute line calling players into his contract hall of fame if earners hall of fame.
Cousins absolutely would be king if he gets that.
He started his career as "the other QB" and people barked at every big contract and now 90 more? Woah

Fwiw, I like him as the tier below elite. Unlike Dak (and Lamar who is elite) Cousins seems to own that he won't be winning a game by himself.
I know people were livid a couple years ago thinking he did but I felt his explanation was quite valid. 3rd or 4th down, waited, waited, had to try something.
I also love how he talks of Jefferson and Theilen often giving them any credit he may deserve.

I honestly believe that Cousins should be making $45 M per season based on what other QBs are making. I also think that it is time for the Vikings to end the relationship even at a smaller price tag. The competitive rebuild is not working as well as the complete blow it up rebuild. Honestly the Bears and Seattle are much better off than the Vikings are on the same timeline.

I am a huge Cousins fan. I thought he would win a SB. But he's won nothing and he hasn't made his teams exceedingly better than another top 10-15 QB would have. There is a lot of dog in him. But it wasn't enough to get his teams to the highest level.

Therefore my conclusion is I was wrong. He wasn't what I thought he would be. His play in big moments is not there. Now that he had this injury, he isn't going to have a Matt Stafford or Matt Ryan last grasp at SB fame. Time for him to find a beach to retire on and start up a business. And I wish him the absolute best in doing so.

I was just reading that Mike Boone and Jeremiah Sirles are complaining that Kirk Cousins takes Tuesdays off. No football related activities.

They don't like that and other QBs do not do this.

Seems like coaches wouldn't be happy about this either.

So Cousins doesn't like Tuesdays (tell me why).

It's just a day off.

I guess maybe like on Sunday you are not supposed to work?

Obviously coaches have been able to work around it, but I can see why teammates might not like it.

It goes into it on the QB documentary on Netflix. It didn't seem to be a problem but of course that was skewed to Cousins perspective. It also wasn't like he was sitting on the coach, drinking beer and smoking stogies. I think he did some body maintenance (massage therapy, etc) but took it as a mental reset day. I think he talked about it in the therapy sessions he had with the team shrink as well.

Not every person is mentally the same or needs the same type of preparation to be ready. I really don't think taking Tuesday's "off" had any detrimental effect on his play. It may have a detrimental effect on his locker room relationships but I don't think it should of. It really is kind of a microcosm of many people in this world worrying about what others are doing and how they do it over worrying about getting themselves ready.

Why not? He isn't build on speed and agility. I really don't see where this injury will take away from his game. He is a year older but it's not like he is a RB that needs to cut, accelerate, and run away from people. I don't think this injury has any real effect on his future play.

Yeah.

It's the offseason. These guys need something to talk about.

Huh? He was having a career year. He is not nearly done.

I am a huge Cousins fan (as well as a Vikings fan) and I think last year showed how leading this team (essentially the same one as this past year) to a 13-4 record showed how he made a team exceedingly better than they should have been. They won a ton of one score games and he was the reason why...that is the sign of the dog.

Adding some pieces to the defense (as well as now having a competent defensive coordinator) and getting Cousins back would make this team very dangerous.
