Ran a 10k in June (3 Viewers)

Nice race under the conditions, Chief, but...

WTF??
I should have said chews. They were chews. I have a bag in my pocket, so when I'm ready to eat a couple I put em in my mouth.

I had a blast at today's trail HM, but as I suspected, I'm just not in shape like I want to be. I took some pics while out on the trail and took a video of the return trip across the creek. I'll try to post those on Monday.

We had torrential rains last night; I actually woke up at 2 something because it was raining so hard. That made the trails a glorious mudfest, but man was that tough. Finished in a modest 2:03:26. In hind sight, I'm thrilled I'm capable of running that with so little training. In comparison, it was faster than my first triple (212) by a minute, but 12mins slower than last year. It makes me really appreciate last year's triple where I was able to run a 1:51 and then go back out for a 10k and 5k that morning.

Section 1 was pretty easy. My GPS however cut out early and was off the entire day. I was around an 8:20ish for the first two miles, but my HR was already into the 180s. I knew that was no bueno, so I backed it off a notch. At mile 3 we crossed the creek for the first time. Holy #### was that water cold!! The depth varied from mid calf to just below the knee. Not bad, but high enough where you needed to take your time crossing.

Miles 3-7 were a tough stretch where most of the hills and technical trails were. As I finished this section, I knew I was in trouble so I dropped back again and decided to just have fun. Rare that I do that, but I knew I wasn't in shape to race at this point. From here on out I chatted up a lot of the runners and had a blast. Ended up talking with two girls as we crossed the creek and found out that they were doing their first ever HM. I caught the whole conversation on video.

The finish was up a sadistic hill that I was barely able to run. If my kids weren't at the top, I'm not sure if I would've ran the whole thing. My legs were torched.

All in all, I had a lot of fun. It's a big pill to swallow to see guys competing and I couldn't compete with them. But, it is what it is I guess.

I placed 46/186, which I'll take!

The upside of being on the shelf from running on weekends...and not running the half this morning in Nashville....I get to sleep til about 7:30.
Was talking about this with the boss yesterday, is it a Rock n Roll event?
Yes...Country Music Maratahon.

Need to ask a few people how it went this year since they moved the starting line into the main part of downtown (or at least that is the first course I had seen for it this year).

Yeah, I heard it's not the flatest course around either, is that true?
Definitely not a flat course....and Nashville weather is not greatly consistent for this time of year.

Few years ago it was perfect (so cold to many people). Last year was rain. Year before was warm and humid. Today it was 70 degrees by about 9am and a high about 80 I think.

Go to the running store and buy a few singles to try out.

Personally just the thought of eating those things - :X
I'm with Sand, do not typically partake of the gel unless absolutely necessary i.e. very long run with no other nutrition. I run first thing in the morning with nothing more than a cup of coffee in me regardless of the distance. About 10 miles into a long run you start getting a might bit peckish and these are the least evil things I've found to carry & consume.
Lots of better/cheaper things to carry. Jellybeans, orange slices (candy ones), etc. All you need is easy to digest calories and these have those without tasting like ###.
Jelly beans - like Easter candy or the sports beans? Never liked the sports beans though I would use them occasionally.
I've never done this, but I've seen people on other forums argue in favor of jelly beans and gummi bears. GU and other products are really just fancied-up sugar. So if you prefer the taste/texture of candy instead, you're about as well off just to go that route.
Easter candy. Today I partook in M&Ms and a can of coke as the fuel during my ride (it's what they had on the table).

---

Speaking of which, today marks my longest ride ever - Tour de Blue Gran Fondo. 108 miles. Had a pretty good ride with the second group on the road. Ended up finishing in front that group and was sixth overall to finish. Not a bad day. The ride has one big climb and I had a great time on that. Two big descents and those were awful - one was very technical and there were a couple bad wrecks (I went down like a wuss). The other was fast, fast and straight and with the gusty sidewind was ### puckering - wobbling around at 45mph is the suck. All was great except the darn wind - S wind kicked up and the course was mainly NE out SW in. The last 15 miles solo sucked balls.

Now on to some embarrassing eating - I burned about 4,500 calories today.

Nice job, racers. It sounds like Ned and Chief battled some serious elements out there. Sorry about the DNF, tri, but you did the right thing not to push an injury.

It may have been mentioned already, but currently reading a life without limits by one of my favorite athletes, Chrissie Wellington. Not bad, not overly captivating but worthwhile for those of us in the hobby.

Tri - do you wear calf sleeves? My calves are my circuit breaker and I swear by these things now. In either case probably a good thing cutting that where you did. It would have had to have been a AA race for me to keep going.

Probably just not running the corners. On your mini-bonk, what is the longest run you did to prepare? I did my best HM when I ran several runs over the distance.

Ned - Never run in muck like that. Sounds fun - kinda. Still not a bad finish, though.

It's funny you mention the corners. I have a good buddy from college who races cars. I've been hearing about the apex of a corner for YEARS, so when I run, I always try to hit the Apex. So I would say I actually run the corners pretty efficiently. When I mapped this course prior to the event, it was every bit of 13.3. So the distance doesn't surprise me.

As for my longest training run, it was a little over 14. I also just ran a half 2 weeks ago. Similar results.

Huh - usually decent sized races are dead nuts on.

I always wear calf socks, so who knows the cause. One of the race organizers and a couple others had come out on the course, and about a 1/2 mile before the calf tightened up, I had passed them and asked if they knew how to unlock a Garmin's keys. In that brief exchange, I twisted around a bit to finish the conversation while running by them ...it could have been something as nuanced as the turn of the body and a twist of the leg.

Ned - smart of you to back off and just enjoy the run (if not facing injury instead of fatigue or soreness, I actually wanted to enjoy my final loop, too). Will this video of the young ladies in the cold creek be a new level of race stalking? I have visions of wet t-shirts as your merry little band splashes about in the cold creek ...

Chief, I agree that with more mileage/training, you'll have success with HM. Keep in mind, too, that the weather you faced brought with it humidity ...and at least for me, humidity is brutal on the HR and, therefore, effort. I do the same thing with shot blocks ...pop them in the mouth, bite them in half and hold in the gums for a bit to soften them up.

Im guessing most won't.

Had a great area out there near Vandy. Had Centennial park to warm up and stretch out...great place for the porto johns too.

The group I have run with and raised money for had a hotel right there at the start (I know they were pissed).

Usually take one of those baby food pouches w/ me on my runs over 10 miles or so because I didn't know what else to do and figured these were a pretty decent thing to take.
That's actually not a bad idea. I know ultra guys who do that, too.
didn't see the nutritioon facts on the target site but similar products are showing 60 calories. Not nutrient dense enough to carry.

My company has an in with the Rock n Roll group, was thinking of doing this one next year, maybe. Need to hear more.

Nice job racers! They can't all be PR's but each one teaches something. If nothing else it sounds like there were some different racing conditions for everyone which always makes them fun!

Mrs. MAC did her ten miler today in 1:25, I told her she is running a 1:50 half in three weeks. She's killing it.
How fast would you run it if I was driving a car in front of you with a "Bridgewater sucks" sign on the back?? :drive:

Best I can get my wife to do is drive a ten miler. Run one?? pfffft

Nice work, Ned and Chief! Tough break, Tri-man but I'm sure you're bounce back quick.

Chief, if you really want to get your half marathon time down, you might want to try some shorter races this summer and work on your speed. Conditioning is obviously a priority for a half but if you can lower your 5 and 10K times, running 8's in a half will be much easier.

17 miles yesterday for me. Was pretty rough. I will never complain about it being too hot ever again(until I complain about it of course). Bring on the 95 degree temps please. Suck index is my new favorite term.

Dang, I should just start a cycling thread. :kicksrock:

But then it would just be Joe T and ghostguy in there telling me how I deserve to get run over for being that guy.

There's no winning...

My bad. Its true that when I see posts about cycling and swimming my eyes glaze over because I can't or won't do those things. I respect the hell out of triathletes though. Good job on that bike yesterday.

How does being on the bike for 5.5hrs compare to running a marathon? That sounds excruciating on the prostate. Isn't averaging close to 20mph pretty studly?

For 100 miles, averaging 20 mph is studly. I can do it for 60 but imagine going to a century is like keeping your HM pace for the full 26.2

Bummer about the DNF, Tri. Hoping its minor and RICE will do the trick.

Ned, sounds like an awesome race.

You just reminded me that I love trail running and need to get back out there...

Think I will sign up for the Skyline run

Depends on the course (as always). For the first 25, which was pretty hilly and less dependent on drafting I did 18mph, which is still reasonably decent. After that we had a good paceline with some strong guys on some rolling roads and made up time. If solo with still winds I would have done 18.5 maybe. Would have been 20+ with the paceline, but the winds really made it tough on the way back.

As far as how it compares to a marathon I'd posit that a marathon beats you up much, much more. Comfort on the bike isn't too bad, as long as your equipment fits. That said my back still hurt more from the effort of gripping the bars for 5.5 hours than anything else. Common for me. And my legs were pretty close to cramping the last 10 or so as I'm definitely not accustomed to being on the bike that long. I did a lot of standing riding in the last 10 as it was more comfortable that way (insert Chris Horner joke here).

so the 5K went pretty well today. Those in Chicago know that conditions weren't great today and running along Lake Michigan with easterly winds wasn't the scenic pleasant time it can be.

Goal 1: didn't get reinjured and the legs did great. I forgot how much a race like this can #### up the rest of your day, esp. if you haven't done one in long time. Worth it so far, I might feel different tomorrow.

Goal 2: Brother beat me handily. He finished 5th. I was 20 something.

Goal 3: One of my work friends was running and she's a good runner. I paced myself behind her most of the race and passed her in the last 1/2 mile. There was a female ahead that I probably could have beat but I didn't have a good feel for when to kick and how aggressively my body was able to kick.

I don't have official results, but the clock was 18:50 when I finished. I didn't have watch or HR or anything like that. Probably would have psyched me out if I knew I was running even 6 through the first mile, so ignorance was bliss.

I'll fill in a few more details later, but very happy with what this old body was capable of today. More than anything else, that's why I run. And today was good.

I'm 44.

Dumb question - looked like I was the only one with bib tacked to my shirt. Do most people nowadays just put them in a pocket? It was a bib with e-chip

Sweet, more fast people in here.

Well done, Brony, helluva first race back!

Not sure why not. Those bibs aren't meant to be folded up as the chip should be flat to work.

I didn't have time to get a long run in today, so I made the most of the 90 minutes I did have. Eight miles with 1100' of gain with a bit better pace than I normally manage. The highlight was by far the descent from mile 6-7, a pretty technical section of single track that I pushed hard down and really got into a "flow" of just picking my way quickly down the trail. It was an awesome feeling, one my slow ### doesn't get to experience very often.

So, Brony, I'm in your age group and my PR set last year was 18:41. If you run that race with me we should have a good showdown although I think you'll have the advantage coming off such a great race. Plus, I'm not sure I'm in sub 19 shape although seeing you in front of me might help with the motivation!

if my legs hold up this week, I will definitely try for that downers race. Will be good showdown!

Sweet, more fast people in here.
Tell me about it! When I first started posting here I would look at Grue's numbers and tell myself, I'm not that far behind. Then Koby and Steve came along, and I told myself, well, at least they're younger! Now Brony comes along and he's older (by a year) and lives in the same metropolitan area?!

20 days is too short to give an answer that will make much of a difference.
