Ran a 10k - Official Thread (4 Viewers)

Duck - ugh! Fingers crossed!!

I had a decent 7 miler on Thursday with 5 at a good tempo (8:03/mile). Heading to Grand Rapids for the weekend with a plan for tomorrow morning to run 20-21 on a nice Boston simulation course. My foot/ankle probably won't be too happy by the time I'm done, but I want to get in a long one.

Think I overdid it with my weight lifting yesterday. Despite extra stretching today, I was still not comfortable until about 12 minutes into my run. I stopped once in the 22 minutes for about 15 seconds to take a swig of water. The good news is, I didn't really struggle catching my breath. Seems like I am either good on breathing and have little things making me uncomfortable physically, or I am ok physically but can't catch my breath. Waiting patiently for it all to come together. Today was pretty good all things considered. It's my best pace to date

Looks like our 20 from Hopkinton to Newton tomorrow will be done in the snow, a couple of inches forecast during the run. Really all you can do now is laugh, grind it out and hope the weather gods show us some mercy on 4/20.

Ran 5 yesterday. Not a big deal, but did it with cops covering every intersection and cross street. Turns out that O was here to give a talk at a local college - they swept the shoulder (never touched for the 5 years previous) and patched the road (which went from awful to mediocre). So, it has taken 6 long years, but finally I found something I can thank him for. :P

I had posted in the old thread about starting to run a bit because my wife did a 1/2 marathon last year.

I got up to a 5K last fall, but not much more. Over the winter, I didn't do much running in terms of distance at all. I played squash a couple times a week and played soccer once a week, so I did a lot of running in short burst, my wife said something about fart training, sounds fine to me.

Anyway, went out for a run last night for the first time and I was able to do 5K (10+1's) much faster than I was last year. Not sure if it's having so many months off, being in better shape from the winter activities or something else, but it has me pretty motivated to keep going now.

I've lost most of my motivation to run recently. Since my 5K two weeks ago, I've only run 5 times and haven't done any speed or tempo work. I'm not sure I have a good reason for this. I still have some nagging injuries that can use the rest but I've run through worse.

I suppose I could fix this by signing up for an upcoming race but I'm not feeling that itch. The original plan for the spring was to run a series of 5Ks and see if I could get faster and faster. Setting a PR was important to be since the old one was approaching two years old but now that I've done that, I don't feel like putting in the work just to shave off a few more seconds. I'd love to break 18:00 but that seems so far away.

I've gone though these unmotivated spells before and I'm sure it will pass eventually but wanted to provide a Jux update. Thanks for listening!

If it makes you feel any better, similar boat here. I have been focusing more on strength training since I think that's been the source of my nagging injuries, but I have justified skipping a run more than a couple of times the last two weeks, as I had written previously several times before then too. Weather this week sure didn't help, I guess mentally I've had it with winter.Scheduled six or seven tomorrow, we will see if that gets me going. If not I may need to sack up and sign up for a race.

Twenty from Hopkinton through the Newton Hills is in the books: 3:06/9:28 137/157

Miles 1 - 5 9:00/130/144

Miles 6 - 10 9:11/137/150

Miles 11 - 15 9:30/140/149

Miles 16 - 20 9:40/146/157

Temps in low 30s, snowed the whole time with a stiff wind/sideways snow in the face from mile 5 onward. I was wishing I'd worn a more waterproof ensemble as I was probably carrying an extra 5lbs of moisure by the finish. There were a TON of runners on the course, with police working all the major intersections along the way getting runners through as if there was an actual race going on. And there were fluid stations set up by various groups at least every half mile. Took a GU every 5 miles and feel like I nailed the fuel/fluid intake.

Not easy and I'm hurting a little bit now but compared to last wek's 14 when I don't think I could have run another mile I felt like I had more in the tank at the end. With reasonable weather, fresh legs and some race day adreneline I'm feeling a lot better about getting in under 4.

On to the taper.

surprised to hear that from you, as one of the best runners in this thread. But it happens to everyone I guess.

Take some time off, do some other stuff. Get back into it if you want to. Just stay somewhat active in other activities.

While I haven't lost motivation for running, I have lost motivation to do another 140.6 / IM. I don't think I will for a few years at least. I'm actually really glad my SIL gave me the reason to drop IM CHOO. Don't think I'll be doing any ultras either and will revert to my original plan for 2015 - speed at the half distance. I'll look for a few races , 10k-HM throughout the year and enjoy those. I do have the Raleigh HIM in May but otherwise probably won't do any races over 2 hours this year.

I typically lose my motivation for 2-3 months after I run a marathon, I can feel it coming on already and regret signing up for a half marathon in May. I don't plan on running another marathon until Nov 2016. You can't be ON all the time, everyone needs time to recharge.

However if you get your mojo back and still don't think you can break 18 this season (if healthy I think you have a shot) you can definitely beat 18:19 my PR.

love reading "on to the taper".

gl duck. I'm sure your well-medically trained chiro will know what's what. ;)

dragged Floppinho out for a 1.25. 26deg today and I foolishly mentioned HR monitoring as a tool for training... "my heart is going to explode!... I have to stop!". more energy whining and moaning than running  didn't cover ourselves in glory, but yet again he still put in the full run.

This morning's 10M sucked. kept HR in the 140s but by mile 7 I was in the 9s. As I was running I remembered what they say about nutrition and sleep in training - usually it's what you did 2 days ago that has the most impact. Considering I haven't slept much in the last 72 hours (6yo was violently ill was night) and I didn't eat anything from 8pm Tuesday until 1pm yesterday, it isn't that surprising that this run was rough.
Much better run today

72 minutes (18 x 4 minute laps) keeping HR in the 140s, then 30 minutes in the 160s, 2 minute cool down. Didn't look at mileage until the end but 13.25 miles, 1:44, 151 avg HR.

Just when I thought I had no chance to win any 5K's in the old-ish man age division in Chicago, a small opening is created! Just stay on that couch Sally and definitely don't bother going to Busse Woods this Saturday.

 I might have to sign up just so I can get those free premium race shorts! Seriously, though, it's nice to see you racing again. Good luck! By the way, I was thinking about running that 5K at Midwestern University again this year that we ran last year. Are you up for that this year?

On a separate note, after deciding to skip a run yesterday and writing that Woe Is Me post, I reconsidered and decided that I'd at least go out for a little while. Ended up having a very enjoyable 13.4 mile run where I was accidentally running in the low 7s the last few miles. I guess sometimes I respond well to some self pity.

What a difference, great example of the impact eating and sleeping well has.

Week 10.

Monday: 4.67 Miles. 147 HR. 10:13 Pace. Thought I was going to be in the 9's finally on my slow runs, but no. Getting close though.
Tuesday: 3.81 Miles Race Pace. Was supposed to be 4, but lightning started and headed home. 167HR, 8:14 Pace. Getting excited.
Wednesday: Off.
Thursday: 6.07 Miles of Higdon Tempo Run. Miles 1-4, 146 HR. Pace of 10:06. Next 1.5 Miles 166HR, 8:36 Pace. Then cool down for the rest. Very pleased with this run. Felt great. The race pace miles in the consistent mid 8's is getting me in a good position for the race in two weeks.
Friday: Off
Saturday: 6.26 Race Pace Run. 172 HR. 8:32 Pace. This entire run was dead into about a 15mph east wind. Was running to my kids soccer games. So I was very pleased with this one. Felt awesome at the end.
Sunday: 12.01 Mile Higdon 3/1 Run. First 8 Miles was 148HR, Pace of 10:46. The remainder was 169HR, Pace of 9:05. Slow today, but not bad. My guess is some tired legs from yesterdays pace run, so I feel ok with this one. Actually thought I was running faster til I looked at the data.

So 32.82 for the week.

Two weeks to go. Was glad to get a 12 miler under my belt. Been awhile since I went that far, mainly because of the slow running. But I'm progressing. At this point, my only concern for race day is sustaining that pace for 13.1. My fitness right now is about where I was last spring when I ran 1:49, so I think I'm there. Can I push that little bit extra? I believe so.

Edit to add: was treated to about an 80 year old man running in a speedo and head band this morning. That was interesting.

Didn't have time. I came around a corner and there he was, in all of his glory. There was a woman running in front of him, and she had the same look on her face as I probably did: what the hell did I just see?

How high did your heart rate jump when you saw his banana hammock?

One of the befits of living that long is not giving a #### what other people think. Must be awesome, hope we all get there.

Taper Time and I need it, I have been really tired all week. Usually I am able get in my shorter runs during lunch, but the work schedule hasn't allowed that for the past 3 weeks. So I have been doing all of my running before work which means getting up at 4:30. The combination of not being recovered from last weekend's race and a lack of sleep made this week difficult. I took some risks as well, running the intervals on Tuesday 2 days after my half probably wasn't wise, but I made it though the week.

M 4 miles easy on the treadmill
T 11 miles with 4 X 1200s 4:29, 4:31, 4:31, and 4:34. It was cold and I didn't want to pull anything so I kind of took them kind of easy. Before signing up for the half last week I had penciled in that I was going to replace this run with a tempo. Intervals are a lot easier for me than a temp so I took the easy way out.
W 14 miles 8:14 134
T 8 miles 8:14 128
F 6 miles 8:30 129
S 20 miles 8:19 132 I should have run this faster, but I was beat. I am kind of surprised it was as fast as it was, it felt like I was crawling.
S 6 miles 8:43 127

Thanks Juxt. The Egg Shell 5K will be my return to racing event and last event before I bump up in AG divisions. As a bonus, I like running at Busse and the kids will like the egg hunt. As of now, May 9 is open, so I will pencil that race in - this year I might actually get a chance to actually run it. I have another local 5K set for April 26 - targetting to be ready to roll for that one.

This past week I was in Cozumel and ran in the 70s. Lots of sweat. It was fantastic! Calf held up well - something is still a little 'off' post run, but it's a different feel than last year for sure and it's so mild I can't even call it pain. When running though, the legs are doing really, really good. :knockonwood:

Glad to hear you were able to get back on the road. Every one gets in a funk from time to time. Sounds like yours may have been short lived.

And no, it was not me. I don't wear a headband.

Commish, listen to you, sounding like a runner! - "I was still not comfortable until about 12 minutes into my run"

Northern Voice - good job with the 'fartlek' running.

Sand - hey, you ran! Hopefully work slows down enough that you can keep at it.

Juxt - Once you get motivated to beat pbm's 18:19 PR, maybe you could go after my 18:08 PR from a much earlier life. Or not. :D

--

A successful distance run for me on Saturday: 20.5 miles at 9:07/mile, 153 HR on a hilly course in Grand Rapids. As mentioned before, it's a great Boston simulation ...generally downhill the first miles and uphill at the end (with some other hills thrown in the middle). It was a calm, sunny, cool (20-25 degree) day. The tendon was sore early and stiff throughout, but not much of a hindrance other than me worrying the whole time. I dropped in a cold bath afterwards since everything was feeling beat up, and that helped. I'm feeling OK today. I've got a tune-up HM next Saturday, which I won't be able to push too hard due to the limited training (and continued cautiousness with the recovery).

Sand - hey, you ran! Hopefully work slows down enough that you can keep at it.

I did, but it was just a filler. And, no, things aren't getting any better. On top of work (bleh), we are in the process of buying a new house and (if that isn't quite enough) my kid needs knee surgery again next week (hopefully minor).

Trying to get in 100 miles/week on the bike, though, and ramp that up as summer approaches. First century next Saturday!

You're in amazing shape, man. That's a hell of a week after racing the HM last Sunday. The taper is gonna do ya very well, me thinks...

Heart rate monitors - what are you guys using now? My Garmin has bit the dust, and I'd like to get a HRM without the stupid chest strap that I've got to wear. I'm confident someone has made one that can read a heartbeat via the wristwatch - any recommendations?

I wish there was a way to update the first post in this thread with the information generated in this thread. This question comes up a bunch and and there have been some really good reviews written to just your question but ain't nobody got time to search through this and find them.

There are a couple out there now actively being put through the ringer by guys in the thread. The TomTom Cardio is one. Forget what the other version is, Sand has it. Both have been solid

Multisport: http://www.amazon.com/TomTom-1RH0-001-03-Multi-Sport-Cardio-White/dp/B00JD4TF8W/ref=pd_sim_sbs_sg_sf_2?ie=UTF8&refRID=178VW5SJ032RY190VAAZ

I like it. Sometimes it jumps up or down (off by 40+ sometimes - literally the other day I was running a sub 7 minute pace and the HRM showed 50 bpm, usually it's the other way). Doesn't happen too often but it's annoying when it does.

Yeah, I have this one also. Works awesome.

gl duck. I'm sure your well-medically trained chiro will know what's what. ;)
Haven't made the appointment yet, but I took off Thurs-Sunday, iced daily, and have been loading up with anti-inflammatories (Vitamin I the first couple of days, but then turmeric and bromelain) and rolling everything around the knee with a variety of torture devices. Today I busted out the KT tape, taped up the knee, and tested it out with 5 miles. It's definitely not "right", but no pain during the run, although I felt like I had no lungs after just a few days off. Probably mental, but still a little frustrating. I'll head out again tomorrow morning and see what that brings.

I did a quick brain dump of the popular crap we use in the OP. I'm on my iPad, so I'll try to update with some links when I'm on a PC. I'm a big fan of the TomTom Cardio.

As others have said...they have gone with the Tom Tom Runner Cardio or Multisport for wrist based HRM.

I looked at it and others...ended up not caring that I have the chest strap and the cloth one is plenty comfortable and I just don't notice it.

I went with the Polar M400 after my Garmin 305 was dying.

Love it so far and the Polar Flow app and website. Wear it as a regular watch and for my gym workouts too. Slim...and a great battery.

If you don't go integrated either the Scoshe Rhythm or Mio Link will do.

I have the Mio Link and love it. It lasts 8 hours, let's me ride and run without a damn chest strap, and even lets me get HR swimming.

So I was thinking the other day that we have all come to know each other pretty well through this training thread but I probably only know what less than half of you guys look like. So that brought me to the idea that it might be cool if folks wanted to post their favorite race pics. You guys have probably spent way too much money on a picture from a race or two that you were proud of (like me)...so why not post them here!? I'll get us started with a link to some of my favorites.

Just did something I had never done before.

Bought the same shoe I've been wearing for the past few months (although I do rotate through 4 different sets).

Big fan of these from Mizuno. Only problem is the bottom wore out - but I've had them since November.
I found a pair of shoes I like on sale and bought a few pairs of the exact same shoe. My wife thinks I'm a little crazy, but I like what I like.

Big fan of these from Mizuno. Only problem is the bottom wore out - but I've had them since November.
I found a pair of shoes I like on sale and bought a few pairs of the exact same shoe. My wife thinks I'm a little crazy, but I like what I like.
A wife critiquing quirky shoe buying. Now, that's funny.

Having taken a 20 year break from running, I find just about every running shoe to be awesome nowadays.

Heart rate monitors - what are you guys using now? My Garmin has bit the dust, and I'd like to get a HRM without the stupid chest strap that I've got to wear. I'm confident someone has made one that can read a heartbeat via the wristwatch - any recommendations?
If you don't go integrated either the Scoshe Rhythm or Mio Link will do.

I have the Mio Link and love it. It lasts 8 hours, let's me ride and run without a damn chest strap, and even lets me get HR swimming.
When you say "integrated", what do you mean?

Thanks all for the recs

I know that one run is a lousy sample size, but I did few miles yesterday with compression socks and did not even feel a twinge from my Achilles, which had been barking at me every other time. Now I suppose it's possible that the problem just magically went away, but probably not.

I recently started trying to get into some sort of shape and thought running is my best option. my problem is I like music when I run and I don't like having to carry my phone or have it strapped to my arm. so I went and bought a Samsung Gear S watch that can hold music files, has a GPS, and everything I need. Plus, it can pair with my Note 3, which was really nice.

the problem is that when I go running with it, the music is skipping every 1-2 seconds with my Bluetooth headphones. I tried it with my phone and it works perfectly. use the watch, it skips. I thought it was a watch issue so I returned the Gear S and bought an Adidas SmartRun watch. turns out it does the same thing only worse. another thing that is strange is that the watch/headphones work perfectly in the house/garage but when I get halfway down my driveway, it starts cutting out. I read something about Bluetooth working better when it has walls to bounce off of but have no idea if this is right.

I did some reading and turns out the Bluetooth must be really weak with the watches. I'm not an expert on Bluetooth but apparently the phone can put out a stronger signal than a watch? I usually have my watch on my left wrist but receiver on the headphones is on my right ear. this is causing an issue, I guess. I have also read that clothing over the watch or headphones can cause problems, which would make running in the cold kind of unpleasant if I can't cover my ears. I am going to try it tonight with the watch on my right arm and see if it works better but I thought I'd pose the questions here:

has anyone had this problem and how did you resolve it? would better headphones work? mine were pretty expensive to start with. just wear your watch on the same side as the receiver? would a winter hat over the headphones and a sweatshirt over the watch cause enough interference with the Bluetooth? any Bluetooth experts in here?

I really don't want to go back to my phone strapped to my arm....

I also wear Mizuno, but the wave rider ones. It was the first shoe I ever bought for running two years ago. Went into a local running shop and got fitted, the whole bit. 2 years later, haven't had so much as a blister or anything with these things. So I've continued to buy the same ones. The best part now is I can find em for around $49 a pair for last years models at the running expos before my races. Local stores are always closing out that shoe.

Watches like the Tom Tom Cardio have the laser in the watch, so HR is integrated. Those bands are just HR. I use mine with a Garmin 310 or Edge 800. For me it was the optimal solution - I'll never wear a chest strap again.

So I was sick with a cold last week and ran a little. Ran Sunday 3 miles at 10:00 pace. This morning I went 2.5 at 8:20 pace. If I had a HRM on I am sure I would have been 180 after 1.5 because at 2.3 I had to be close to maxing so I slowed considerably. I tried to best last weeks run pace and did so, but I may want to ease up next time. Tomorrow is an easy 3, then I will run on Thursday, pace and distance to be decided. Take Friday off then run Saturday. Sunday off. That is the plan so far. Body feels good. Losing weight quick. I hope to be up to 6 miles per day, 5 days a week by summer. We shall see.

Nice! By summer, if you can get to a double digit-mile day (especially a warm or hot day), wait til you see the pounds drop off.

One of these days I am going to get this balance down. I'm finally feeling stronger and healthier, but I'm running like ####. I am way too uncomfortable given the times I've been running. Doing strength training Thursday, but I'm thinking bag a run tomorrow then do a couple of longer low-and-slow's Friday (since I'm off work) and Sunday. A lot of us seem in a funk lately, huh?

You can run 6 tomorrow if you slow down. And by slow down, I mean 11:00 pace. You may think you're crawling, but those slow miles will be HUGE for your fitness.

You're there my friend.

Feelin' good (165) at the start of my last marathon leading a bunch of half marathoners.

Feelin' not so good at the finish. 2 seconds later I piled up.

Ran the Shamrock Shuffle 8k in Chicago with little to no training. I went in with little to no expectations since I am weighing in around 20lbs heavier than I was last year. Got a bit of a Juxt thing goin on since the Chicago Marathon in October. Planned on just giving it a slow 9 mile pace the whole way, and hoping that would jump start my fatass into getting back onto the road.

Anyone from the Chicagoland area will know how ####ty the weather was on Sunday. Nasty winds, and cold temps are not my bag.

Ran the first mile at a 9 mile pace and then the 2nd about 8:30 before I started to actually warm up. Mile 3 clocked in around 8 minutes and the last 2 were close to 7 per.

I had the course a bit long on my watch and I actually ran 5 miles under 40 minutes

Official Time: 40:20

2415/10025 Male

3181/22871 Overall
