Ran a 10k - Official Thread (16 Viewers)

So I was thinking the other day that we have all come to know each other pretty well through this training thread but I probably only know what less than half of you guys look like. So that brought me to the idea that it might be cool if folks wanted to post their favorite race pics. You guys have probably spent way too much money on a picture from a race or two that you were proud of (like me)...so why not post them here!? I'll get us started with a link to some of my favorites.

Feelin' good (165) at the start of my last marathon leading a bunch of half marathoners.

Feelin' not so good at the finish. 2 seconds later I piled up.
Nice. Love the shot of the clock in the background.

Also, like that someone else participated. For a minute it seems like my idea went over like a fart in church. :oldunsure:

Ran the Shamrock Shuffle 8k in Chicago with little to no training. I went in with little to no expectations since I am weighing in around 20lbs heavier than I was last year. Got a bit of a Juxt thing goin on since the Chicago Marathon in October. Planned on just giving it a slow 9 mile pace the whole way, and hoping that would jump start my fatass into getting back onto the road.

Anyone from the Chicagoland area will know how ####ty the weather was on Sunday. Nasty winds, and cold temps are not my bag.

Ran the first mile at a 9 mile pace and then the 2nd about 8:30 before I started to actually warm up. Mile 3 clocked in around 8 minutes and the last 2 were close to 7 per.

I had the course a bit long on my watch and I actually ran 5 miles under 40 minutes

Wow, that's a huge race. Almost 2000 bros in your age group.

I seem to recall that the good news was that the race started before it rained. How long do you have to wait to cross the start line at a race like that?

yeah i actually finished before the rain/sleet came down. Winds were a female dog though. Took me like 7 minutes to get up to the starting line from Corral B which was the 2nd corral.

So no green beer then? Sounds pritty shetty. Must be difficult to stay warm for that 7 minutes.

yiu have to be in your corral 10 minutes before race time. So I stood there for roughly 20 minutes getting nice and cold. One of the hottest chicks I've ever seen at a race was right in front of me, so I survived.

Yeah, I don't look like that. And never will.

But in the spirit of Ned's "before and after":

Feeling pretty good at mile 29

Dazed and confused at mile 51, with 49 still to go.

Weather was finally spring-ish yesterday (about 60) so it was nice to run in summer clothing. For kicks, I included a 2 mile stretch at 6:17 pace at the park near the end of my run. I've been thinking about trying to make that my typical tempo pace. It felt nice to run fast again. I have to admit, pbm and Tri-man challenging me with their 5K PR times (I think they were challenging me, anyway!) did get my competitive juices flowing.

Juxt happy to see that you are getting motivated, I am confident that if you didn't have your heal/achilles issue you would have already beaten 18:19. I haven't decided yet on a marathon goal, perhaps 3:04:17.

Pictures from my last half

5 miles this morning. This is the distance where things started acting funky last year. So far so good.

One of these days I am going to get this balance down. I'm finally feeling stronger and healthier, but I'm running like ####. I am way too uncomfortable given the times I've been running. Doing strength training Thursday, but I'm thinking bag a run tomorrow then do a couple of longer low-and-slow's Friday (since I'm off work) and Sunday. A lot of us seem in a funk lately, huh?
honestly, it's good to read you write that. I'm probably going to cut races out for a bit (after Raligh HIM, Rocket Man, and a couple others) just to allow myself more balance. Burn out heading into the spring sucks.

Leaning the same. I want to do the 10 mile trail race July 5 that broke me into distance running last year, but I am not pot committed to anything else between now and then. I'm thinking maybe it's a good idea to just stick with this balance for now, although with less frustration re times ran when I do run, then re-focus to running mid May or thereabouts.

I recently started trying to get into some sort of shape and thought running is my best option. my problem is I like music when I run and I don't like having to carry my phone or have it strapped to my arm. so I went and bought a Samsung Gear S watch that can hold music files, has a GPS, and everything I need. Plus, it can pair with my Note 3, which was really nice.

the problem is that when I go running with it, the music is skipping every 1-2 seconds with my Bluetooth headphones. I tried it with my phone and it works perfectly. use the watch, it skips. I thought it was a watch issue so I returned the Gear S and bought an Adidas SmartRun watch. turns out it does the same thing only worse. another thing that is strange is that the watch/headphones work perfectly in the house/garage but when I get halfway down my driveway, it starts cutting out. I read something about Bluetooth working better when it has walls to bounce off of but have no idea if this is right.

I did some reading and turns out the Bluetooth must be really weak with the watches. I'm not an expert on Bluetooth but apparently the phone can put out a stronger signal than a watch? I usually have my watch on my left wrist but receiver on the headphones is on my right ear. this is causing an issue, I guess. I have also read that clothing over the watch or headphones can cause problems, which would make running in the cold kind of unpleasant if I can't cover my ears. I am going to try it tonight with the watch on my right arm and see if it works better but I thought I'd pose the questions here:

has anyone had this problem and how did you resolve it? would better headphones work? mine were pretty expensive to start with. just wear your watch on the same side as the receiver? would a winter hat over the headphones and a sweatshirt over the watch cause enough interference with the Bluetooth? any Bluetooth experts in here?

I really don't want to go back to my phone strapped to my arm....
Since I don't run with music of any sort, I'm in no position to answer this, but I expect someone else can!

Haven't frequented this thread since before the software change. Will have to catch up on some stuff, like some of you crazy #######s running 5 minute mile splits or whatever.

Did my first 5k of the year, called a "Pump and chase". You get a chance to get a head start based on bench press. 225 ten times would be a 10 minute head start, 215 is a 9 minute, 205 and 8 minute...........and so on. Always fun to be like 12 minutes into the race and then have all the real runners blow by me like I am at a stand still.

Anyway, my actual running was 26:10 for the 5k. About 40 seconds off my PR from last year, so I feel kinda good about that to start the year. Still working on the goal of a 25 flat 5k and also a 7 minute mile by the end of this coming Fall.

Still fat though, and still need to drop 20lbs.

Need me some mitiviZation

Trailbreaker Half Marathon race report(short version)-

Came into the race not feeling so great. Have had some issues with my leg. Had a near slip and fall a few weeks ago and still havent recovered from the fred flinstone action. Didnt run for 7 straight days. Decided to play the race by ear.

1st mile was 8:55. 2nd mile was 8:58. 3rd mile was 8:48. Felt stiff, but felt like my breathing hadn't even increased at all. Figured I could stick out this pace. Pretty much stayed within a few seconds of it the rest of the race. 1:56:19 was my official time. Which for me is a PR by almost 2.5 minutes.

My cardiovascular fitness is obviously world's ahead of my strength level. Honestly dont think I was ever breathing out of my mouth the whole run. Was talking to my sister the whole time. Talking to some other people on the course, etc etc. According to my watch, HR was in the 138-145 range the whole way. But my legs were sure killing me. Hips are still sore. Left knee is sore, left calf is sore. Groin is killing me.

I guess my lesson learned is I need to focus on leg lifting exercises and speedwork. Felt like my legs were moving as fast as I could move them. Slight inclines felt like I was on the 60th minute of a stairclimber workout. Push off felt like I was leg pressing. Just completely dead legs.

Greetings gents.

Busy couple days. Tuesday looked like hail/severe dumping here so I did an indoor class. Today I was in Huntsville at a conference (useless). Packed the bike and managed a late afternoon ride up there. Pretty easy ride with the exception of the two hills. First hill sported a quarter mile section averaging 19%. And it had to top out at 30%, as I hit a rut, lifted my front wheel, and had to quickly unclip or flip over backwards. Fun - kinda. Easily the steepest road I've ridden. The way back was just as fun with a nice, steady 11% for a mile and a half. Didn't kill either one, and just about cramped up my hands braking coming down the -19% section on the way back. I let the brakes off right at the end and went from 10 to 30 in less than 100 yards.

Oh, as far as pics here. I'm second from left (BnB is far left). Signed up to ride with the guys again this year and it's going to rock.

Aaand on the self imposed weight loss mandate I had a goal of 175 by April 1st (5lbs/month). Weighed in at 177, so not too bad. That evens out to about 1lb/week since I started in mid-January. I should be 20 lbs lighter this summer than last.

Dang, I would have been a shoe in for a podium back when I could rep 225 22-23 times. Would 325 for 10 reps be a 20 minute head start?

Nah, 10 minute head start is the max........................

Thinking maybe they dont want anyone to die during the benching.

We have a local 5K here that has a separate power-run category. Weigh in at registration and bench your weight. Every rep = 30sec off your time. It's a pretty popular race.

Why do you think your legs were so far behind your cardio?

Congrats on the PR.

Why do you think your legs were so far behind your cardio?
 a few of us have this problem.
Yeah, you mentioned having that problem as well. I can understand not being able to have the turnover or stride length to speed up during a 5k but I can't really wrap my mind around having the same issue during a half marathon.

Since I don't run with music of any sort, I'm in no position to answer this, but I expect someone else can!
went and bought these yesterday: http://www.amazon.com/JayBird-BlueBuds-Sport-Bluetooth-Headphones/dp/B00AIRUOI8

they worked really well and you can wear them different ways so that the receiver is on the left or right side. I ran with the receiver on the right and watch on the left and it still worked fine until I started walking at the end, then I had a few cutouts. I'm going to move the receiver to the left and I suspect I won't have any issues. sound quality is great too. would highly recommend for those looking to get rid of the phone and cord.

ran 3 miles with the dog yesterday. that's about as far as I've ever ran without stopping. my pace is averaging a little over 9:00/mile.

looks like I might be running a 5k later this month, my first race of any kind. trying to make sure I get out at least every other day for 3 miles. hopefully I can start running longer over time as I almost enjoy running now. not sure how far the dog will make it though. he was lagging behind the last mile and a half yesterday.

So I was sick with a cold last week and ran a little. Ran Sunday 3 miles at 10:00 pace. This morning I went 2.5 at 8:20 pace. If I had a HRM on I am sure I would have been 180 after 1.5 because at 2.3 I had to be close to maxing so I slowed considerably. I tried to best last weeks run pace and did so, but I may want to ease up next time. Tomorrow is an easy 3, then I will run on Thursday, pace and distance to be decided. Take Friday off then run Saturday. Sunday off. That is the plan so far. Body feels good. Losing weight quick. I hope to be up to 6 miles per day, 5 days a week by summer. We shall see.
You can run 6 tomorrow if you slow down. And by slow down, I mean 11:00 pace. You may think you're crawling, but those slow miles will be HUGE for your fitness.

You're there my friend.
Missed my run this morning. Overslept. This is good information. Why is the slower pace but more miles good? I am sure it was discussed in the old thread. I will try it tomorrow. Will be hard to maintain an 11:00 pace. My brain hates to "regress" in my training even though it is more miles. My brain is too competitive sometimes. Always trying for PR. Stupid brain.

Long slow runs build leg strength, endurance and cardio. Pretty much the backbone of your running fitness.

I suggest you work up to a slow 5-6 miler once a week. You'll be surprised how much faster your 5k pace improved by running some uncomfortably slow miles

So how often should I work in a long slow run? and what should I follow up with the next day?

Is Strava the app of choice in here?
Strava is pretty awesome.
I like Strava, I've been using it as I ramp up my runs, is there a FBG group or anything? I haven't dug much deeper than my own personal profile so far.

I'd like to be able to take my dog on longer runs, but she just doesn't seem to be built for it, after a km or so, she starts dragging. She'll swim for hours without a break though (golden retriever).

Do one long easy run a week. That's not to say you that should be your only easy run. Run easy most the time and then pick one or two days to run hard. The easy days will allow your body to recover and let you push harder on the more intense days. You get way more benefit this way.

Pretty much the 80/20 rule. Run easy 80% of the time and run hard the other 20%.

Let me also tell you this from personal experience running slow:

1. It will piss you off.

2. You will feel like you look stupid running slow.

3. You will fight the urge over and over to speed up.

4. It will piss you off.

Keep at it. Be disciplined.

I really starting doing this religiously 11 weeks ago. The first miles I ran "slow", I was running 12:00 miles. This after running 8:30 miles during my half marathons. And most of my training was always fast.

Now, I'm running the same "slow" runs at the same heart rate in the low 10:00's most of the time. And getting better every week.

I feel like I'm running a slow pace at 9:15/mile. not sure how much it matters but I'm 6'5 with long legs (obviously). I think I could walk a 12 minute mile. I'm showing 155 steps per minute with my Adidas SmartRun, assuming that's accurate. All I know is that it seems like I'm slow. Steady, but slow.

I guess I could slow down to 10 minute miles and give it a try. basically trying to run as slow as possible. I'll report back in a couple days.
