Back to the Beach Half Marathon

1:49:02 (8:28/mile) avg HR: 168 3rd in AG
Way to get it done on a tough day, and the medal monger strikes again!

Cheaha Ultra Ride Report

The ride.

Details:

124.5 miles

8:25 moving time

12,500 ft. of climbing

One pair of torched legs.

Gents,

I don't do 50mile runs, so no 16 hour adventures to be had there. This is about as epic as I get.
This sounds epic, indeed! Well done, can't imagine being on a bike that long.

I raced the Wildwood Half on Sunday. I didn't have high expectations for this one....

....Finished 14th overall and 2nd in my age group with a 1:28:33.
Ho hum, just an AG podium on a day without high expectations. Congrats!

Hey, guys. Thanks for all the kind words (most of you) and support this past weekend. Everything went exactly as planned. Her photographer friend did an amazing job with the photos.
And my recap thread for the weekend wouldn't be complete without acknowledging this. I've seen pics of you two on FB, way to outkick your coverage, gb! Congrats!

If you guys were buddies on garmin connect like me and PBM :hifive: there wouldn't be so much confusion here. :grad:
I don't have any Garmin Connect friends. :kicksrock:
Send me a PM and you will.

Cool kids on strava HA!
I just got your info from pmb. Invite sent.

Maybe FBG Team Strava is cooler, but FBG Team Garmin is certainly faster!
:goodposting: :goodposting: :goodposting:

Team garmin rules, strava drools. :clyde:
I'm much more active on Strava, but I've had Garmin Connect since I first got a Garmin years ago so I still use that as well. Strava was way out in front of the social aspects and the segments, but I still like Garmin's reports a little bit better and it has all of my historical data so I'm sure I'll keep using both.

Still haven't gotten around to writing a race report, hopefully in the next couple of days. I did take all of last week off from running, just a lot of time on my feet working a trade show and client entertaining in San Diego Monday-Wednesday, which I think was actually good active recovery. I went out yesterday to try a few easy miles, but the right IT started acting up with the typical outer knee pain, so I shut it down and walked back to the car after about 3 miles. I got treatment again today, my right hip is super tight as is my mid-back, so they put in some extra attention there. I'll try to keep it to a couple of 2-3 mile flat road (uggh!) runs the rest of this week, and do some extra mobility and stretching work on the hips.

Anyone have any suggestions for running songs I can add?

Here is my running playlist I currently have (90 minutes):

Break My Stride--Matthew Wilder

California Dreamin'--The Mamas & The Papas

Counting Stars--OneRepublic

Don't You Worry Child--Swedish House Mafia

Everybody Wants To Rule The World--Tears For Fears

Eye Of The Tiger--Survivor

The Final Countdown--Europe

Get Lucky--Pharrell Williams

Gonna Make You Sweat--C&C Music Factory

Happy--Pharrell Williams

Hungry Like The Wolf--Duran Duran

Little Talks--Of Monsters And Men

Modern Love--David Bowie

One Headlight--The Wallfowers

Pumped Up Kicks--Foster The People

Riptide--Vance Joy

Your Love--The Outfield

3 A.M. Eternal--The KLF

Sister Golden Hair--America

Let's Get It Started--The Black Eyed Peas

White Wedding--Billy Idol

Come On Eileen--Dexy's Midnight Runners
You are a much happier runner than I am.
Cake - The Distance

Why IM - Dave Mathews

Magnificent - U2
Thanks. First two might be good but I'll never listen to another U2 song after Apple forced their new crap album on me.

Sooo.....just signed up for the 5k I was talking about last week. Next Monday morning.

What's the plan - run till I puke?
Run the first mile like it's a one mile race and then just try to hang on the best you can. This will hurt like a mutha####er but it's probably the best strategy for a noob 5ker. Reason being, many times people start to conservatively and in a race a short as 5k, you never/wont make up the wasted time later in the race. So you bank a little time and do your best to not give too back after.
yep

but (and I really can't over-emphasize this) WARM UP BEFORE THE RACE

starting off hard without properly warming up is a recipe for a cramp. or pulling something.

1 to 2 mile warmup with some light stretching and then 4 or 5 strides. Then give yourself around 5-10 minutes or so to let your heart rate come down.

Oh, also...start from the front.
yeah, I wasn't going to get as specific, but that's a good method.

start from the front if you think you could possibly hang on your best day. No idea who else is running with you, but if there's a bunch of 15 minute types, be courteous and don't get in their way. The concept is sound - don't get stuck behind people and it's extra motivation.

Thanks. First two might be good but I'll never listen to another U2 song after Apple forced their new crap album on me.
I don't listen to many, but this one perks me up.

any chance they have another ride later this summer (say after the 4th of July) or in the fall?
I've got a lead on a Blood Sweat and Gears ticket for the 4th weekend in June.

Really nice ride Sand. 126 miles on a bike is serious business. You should be primed for BSG.

That's gonna be the weekend from hell.

Moving truck is supposed to arrive early Friday morning, wife and kids will drive to her parents, I'll stay behind, open the house Saturday for the cleaners, probably drive from noon to 9pm to meet them, we'll drive down that night or early the next morning to paint a few rooms over a couple days, then the truck arrives, they unload and we put the house together.

So totally in for a race that weekend!

You like DMB?

I have a lot of combos towards the beginning of my long run mixes.

American Baby/Funny The Way It Is

Bartender/The Last Stop

Dancing Nancies/Rhyme & Reason

Crush/Drive In, Drive Out

Typical Situation/Warehouse

Old Dirt Hill/Louisiana Bayou

Two Step/Ants Marching

I usually start off with some Pink Floyd, Bruce, Coldplay, then a slower DMB song followed up with something more up tempo to bridge into more rock n roll once I get moving.

Indeed. Look here. I will likely do the Hot Hundred (hot, flat, very fast) and the Tannehill one (very hilly for first 20 miles, then pretty flat). There is also the All You Can Eat one up in Huntspatch.
blocked at work!

but I was able to look up the Hot Hundred. sounds good, even if I don't like the heat. A whole lot cheaper than tri's. How's the race support? (reads well on the site). All you can eat looks good.

Hunstspatch?
Huntspatch = Huntsville.

Hot Hundred could be brutal or not. The year I did it it was overcast and pretty nice. Last year I did 70 and it got hot towards the end, but really not awful. I have found the support on all these to be great - lots of stops stocked with drinks/food/etc. SAG wagons float around for any real troubles.

Tannehill - Strava from 2012 and the site.

All you can eat.
Would love to meet up with you for one or more of these.

ETA: Just signed up for the All You Can Eat century! :D
Absolutely. The Huntsville one is too far out for me to really plan it, but hopefully it will fall into place. Looks like a fun one.

Name your favorite song to run to. Perhaps a song that gives you some extra pep when you most need it.

Mine is "The Whale Song" by Modest Mouse -- especially the frantic last 100 seconds of the song. I get the urge to sprint every time. It also helps that the song is at least partially about whales trying to escape slaughter by humans. I figure if those whales can swim for their lives, I can at least run a little longer or a little faster! :D

Well if you can get away on Friday at a decent time, it's sort of on the way. You're not going to want the movers to take your bike anyway.

Limiting this to one is tough. Just looking at my playlist for songs that get me moving:

Drowning Pool - Let the Bodies hit the floor

Eminem - Lose yourself and Berserk

The Script - Hall of Fame

Dropkick Murphy's - The Warrior's Code

right - nobody touches Lolita except me.

Mine is

Rear View Mirror, Pearl Jam. I try to put this at the end of my race playlist. I try to time it so if I am at/near my pr then the race ends about when this songfinishes . The opening is a real attention grabber. Often struggling with focus when fatigued towards the end of a race, this re engages me. Find the closest person, go get them, and most importantly, do not let anyone pass you. There is a break about halfway to get your bearings together before the assault the song finishes on.

My Sharona. Has a very underrated guitar solo about halfway through that just builds and builds.

This song has pulled me out of many ruts over the last few years. It's just a fun song.

Note to self....legs getting "tired" = "get new shoes jackass!!!!!!!!!" All the difference in the world today. Was off for a week because of kid events, so decided to introduce the shoes in a 30 minute run today. Felt like I could run another 30 AND it was all outside...helped ease my mind about falling into a rut.

gotta be the shoes. couldn't be the week of rest.

I don't think that that has been noted. But then again, the pics have generally been running pics. When he's all dressed up ...yeah, he does look like Statham.
I've heard that a million times. Personally, I'd rather be built like the dude instead. #ripped
better than looking and being built like Janet Reno

Well, during that week, I off loaded almost 40 yards of mulch, so while I didn't do my runs as normal, I was struggling in the humidity. I wasn't sitting on the couch sipping scotch.

Bark at the moon - Ozzy

Run to the hills - Iron Maiden

:headbang: :headbang: :headbang:
:goodposting: No offense but some of that stuff you guys posted would put me to sleep, I need something that makes yours ear bleed!

:goodposting: :goodposting:

I don't run with music, but I do listen to it before races. FFDP is friggin' awesome - the build up in The Bleeding drives me crazy. :headbang:

Just about anything from Mudvanye would work as a finisher, especially Dig.

Slip Knot Wait and Bleed or Left Behind. Heavier/angrier the better.

Pantera!!!

Frick, now I want to go race.

always a good plan.

Ned may not listen to his jams while he's racing, but he's covering the bases on the middle of the race 5K selections. New Level and Wait and Bleed are staples, as are Walk and Psychosocial. The second you start to hit that wall and that opening guitar riff for those songs pop on...#### pain, JUST GO  :hot: :boxing: :censored:  :football: :X

While I have my MP3 player loaded with testosterone rock, I need something a little less intense to get me through 20 minutes of racing. A few tracks from my racing playlist:

Rebellion (Lies) - Arcade Fire

Dead & Rural - Handsome Furs

Age of Consent - New Order

Stoned & Starving - Parquet Courts

Dancing on My Own - Robyn :bag:

Have seen this and was wondering if that was by design or just a clever way someone came up with tying shoes.

FUBAR this is an awesome ride. And BnB has a cool place. If you can swing it this would be a great ride to partake in.

could he put me up after my divorce?

only partly kidding. But we don't even know when the truck will arrive for sure - the truck driver will tell us that when they load. Maybe it would work out.

How close are you two to Madison?

On race days I always end up playing How it Ends, DeVotchka. Lyrics always pump me up and get me in the right state of mind for that last mile. On Cheaha Ultra day I played The Joy Formidable - good, hard energetic stuff.

----

On the Cheaha Ultra ride there were 80+ finishers and I finished 43rd. Considering the type of folks that tackle this type of ride I'm pretty darn happy with that. I could have easily boosted that by managing my stops a bit better, but I was just wanting to finish.

Transfer for that ride has to be done by June 1st. (Oh, if you hear anything about the Snake Mountain part of the ride, just ignore it. Cake, man. Cake.)

You're gonna have to be a bit more specific about Madison. WI? GA? AL? Square Garden? (I wish - go Rangers!) If AL I'm 1:45 from there.

Thanks for the music talk earlier today, fellas.

4 miles over lunch, 13 dead sprints for 30 seconds(ish) a pop. I don't remember the last two, just remember wanting to vomit, and now all I want to do is nap.

It was awesome.

ETA: heh heh, my pace chart looks like a hospital heart rate monitor.

Alabama slama.

Thought you were closer to Sand. You are rather close to a buddy of mine who lives in Asheville, NC. nice town. a bit liberal, but nice.

 Bib #400 should be easy to remember.

Nice run after lunch - 8 minute warmup, then 8 at HM pace, 4 below threshold, repeat 4 times. Suck index of 156, I was drenched. then it started raining.

Could not get myself up for the 5:30am wake up call but ran 5,4M in the rain at lunchtime with a couple of coworkers, 7:54 pace with 400 ft of hills, great run.

I had one of the guys wear my TomTom to see if the HR data was accurate for him and it worked just fine. At a loss as to why it's so screwed up for me. Maybe my pulse with the meds somehow doesn't compute as well with the TomTom light technology as opposed to the Garmin strap???

Sorry if this has already been posted, but I had no idea that this is what the extra hole at the top of my running shoes was for. Which is helpful for me because I have shoe slippage.
My daughter had shared this with me recently. I get the concept, but my sense is that pulling the laces that tight can hurt circulation. Have you noticed that at all? I might try it with my trail shoes since I have a long trail race coming up.
