I'm much more active on Strava, but I've had Garmin Connect since I first got a Garmin years ago so I still use that as well. Strava was way out in front of the social aspects and the segments, but I still like Garmin's reports a little bit better and it has all of my historical data so I'm sure I'll keep using both.I just got your info from pmb. Still haven't gotten around to writing a race report, hopefully in the next couple of days. I did take all of last week off from running, just a lot of time on my feet working a trade show and client entertaining in San Diego Monday-Wednesday, which I think was actually good active recovery. I went out yesterday to try a few easy miles, but the right IT started acting up with the typical outer knee pain, so I shut it down and walked back to the car after about 3 miles. I got treatment again today, my right hip is super tight as is my mid-back, so they put in some extra attention there. I'll try to keep it to a couple of 2-3 mile flat road (uggh!) runs the rest of this week, and do some extra mobility and stretching work on the hips.

yeah, I wasn't going to get as specific, but that's a good method.yepRun the first mile like it's a one mile race and then just try to hang on the best you can. This will hurt like a mutha####er but it's probably the best strategy for a noob 5ker. Reason being, many times people start to conservatively and in a race a short as 5k, you never/wont make up the wasted time later in the race. So you bank a little time and do your best to not give too back after.
but (and I really can't over-emphasize this) WARM UP BEFORE THE RACE
starting off hard without properly warming up is a recipe for a cramp. or pulling something.
1 to 2 mile warmup with some light stretching and then 4 or 5 strides. Then give yourself around 5-10 minutes or so to let your heart rate come down.
Oh, also...start from the front.
start from the front if you think you could possibly hang on your best day. No idea who else is running with you, but if there's a bunch of 15 minute types, be courteous and don't get in their way. The concept is sound - don't get stuck behind people and it's extra motivation.
I don't listen to many, but this one perks me up.

Moving truck is supposed to arrive early Friday morning, wife and kids will drive to her parents, I'll stay behind, open the house Saturday for the cleaners, probably drive from noon to 9pm to meet them, we'll drive down that night or early the next morning to paint a few rooms over a couple days, then the truck arrives, they unload and we put the house together.
So totally in for a race that weekend!

Mine is "The Whale Song" by Modest Mouse -- especially the frantic last 100 seconds of the song. I get the urge to sprint every time. It also helps that the song is at least partially about whales trying to escape slaughter by humans. I figure if those whales can swim for their lives, I can at least run a little longer or a little faster!

Rear View Mirror, Pearl Jam. I try to put this at the end of my race playlist. I try to time it so if I am at/near my pr then the race ends about when this songfinishes . The opening is a real attention grabber. Often struggling with focus when fatigued towards the end of a race, this re engages me. Find the closest person, go get them, and most importantly, do not let anyone pass you. There is a break about halfway to get your bearings together before the assault the song finishes on.

Note to self....legs getting "tired" = "get new shoes jackass!!!!!!!!!" All the difference in the world today. Was off for a week because of kid events, so decided to introduce the shoes in a 30 minute run today. Felt like I could run another 30 AND it was all outside...helped ease my mind about falling into a rut.

I don't run with music, but I do listen to it before races. FFDP is friggin' awesome - the build up in The Bleeding drives me crazy.
Just about anything from Mudvanye would work as a finisher, especially Dig.
Slip Knot Wait and Bleed or Left Behind. Heavier/angrier the better.

First I've heard of them. They do seem ..interesting ..but reading the reviews, I see some issues with durability. They might be fun to try for $50, though they're not my cup of tea. My own preference is to develop an appropriate stride with natural spring. I wouldn't feel right having the shoe do the 'springing' for me.

Ned may not listen to his jams while he's racing, but he's covering the bases on the middle of the race 5K selections. New Level and Wait and Bleed are staples, as are Walk and Psychosocial. The second you start to hit that wall and that opening guitar riff for those songs pop on...#### pain, JUST GO

Sorry if this has already been posted, but I had no idea that this is what the extra hole at the top of my running shoes was for. Which is helpful for me because I have shoe slippage.

only partly kidding. But we don't even know when the truck will arrive for sure - the truck driver will tell us that when they load. Maybe it would work out.

On race days I always end up playing How it Ends, DeVotchka. Lyrics always pump me up and get me in the right state of mind for that last mile. On Cheaha Ultra day I played The Joy Formidable - good, hard energetic stuff.

On the Cheaha Ultra ride there were 80+ finishers and I finished 43rd. Considering the type of folks that tackle this type of ride I'm pretty darn happy with that. I could have easily boosted that by managing my stops a bit better, but I was just wanting to finish.

Transfer for that ride has to be done by June 1st. (Oh, if you hear anything about the Snake Mountain part of the ride, just ignore it. Cake, man. Cake.)
You're gonna have to be a bit more specific about Madison. WI? GA? AL? Square Garden? (I wish - go Rangers!) If AL I'm 1:45 from there.

4 miles over lunch, 13 dead sprints for 30 seconds(ish) a pop. I don't remember the last two, just remember wanting to vomit, and now all I want to do is nap.
It was awesome.

Bib #400 should be easy to remember.Nice run after lunch - 8 minute warmup, then 8 at HM pace, 4 below threshold, repeat 4 times. Suck index of 156, I was drenched. then it started raining.

Could not get myself up for the 5:30am wake up call but ran 5,4M in the rain at lunchtime with a couple of coworkers, 7:54 pace with 400 ft of hills, great run.
I had one of the guys wear my TomTom to see if the HR data was accurate for him and it worked just fine. At a loss as to why it's so screwed up for me. Maybe my pulse with the meds somehow doesn't compute as well with the TomTom light technology as opposed to the Garmin strap???

My daughter had shared this with me recently. I get the concept, but my sense is that pulling the laces that tight can hurt circulation. Have you noticed that at all? I might try it with my trail shoes since I have a long trail race coming up.doowain said:
