Ran a 10k - Official Thread (12 Viewers)

I'll assume that logic holds for marathons too, which might be a weakness in my training.  I'll generally run long without any, or maybe with one bar to eat (same on the bike).  But in the race I'll take more as I'm operating on a higher effort.

Btw, is it a bad sign that I'm completely wiped from a few hours of landscaping?
No, it's different than what your body is used to. My old man harasses me all the time with how wiped out I get walking 18. Similar boat right now. Spent 3 hours this morning running all over the track coaching my oldest's K-2 track meet. Got home, jogged a mile to the baseball field for a coaching clinic. Jogged home then did yard work for about three hours.

I have a two and a half hour run scheduled tomorrow afternoon that was supposed to be 20 miles, but probably won't be that far now. I'm beat.

:lmao:  At Juxt's report. We all get not having our best day, but on yours you win the race going away
I always have mixed feelings about writing about "failures" in this thread.  In some ways the writing helps me personally deal with the mixed emotions of success and failure that I imagine every runner in this thread feels from SteveC to the guys hoping to finish their first 5k.  I also hope that some of the lessons I learn about the mistakes I make can be helpful to others.  On the other hand, I'm constantly aware that I may be coming across doucheishly. In the end, I've decided to error on the side of open honesty.

Know exactly what you mean. As we improve, our standards get higher. Podium results eventually take a backseat to personal bests. After all, we all really just want to run to best of our abilities when we race.

You had a rough day and it doesn't make you feel any better that no one else showed up. I totally get it.

Completely agree with this, a big reason why we put in as much work in as we do is to get better.  Juxt just ran into some tough luck with the conditions last week.  I am sure that he wasn't fully recovered for today's race, I know I am not a week after running a half.  Ideally I would have raced a 10k myself or run a 6 mile tempo today, but I didn't feel up to it.  I decided to run an interval workout that I typically don't have a problem with, 6X 800s, and I had to cut the workout short by an interval.

Oh I don't think you came off as douchey at all, sorry if that's what came across in my post. It was more shaking my head in appreciation at the talent that exists in this thread, that people like you can have a bad day and win a race.

We're all doing our thing in here, and while what I do and what you do are pretty much completely different sports, we all keep coming back for the community, support, and shared learning this place has given us for years now.

A guy I went to high school with, and have only stayed in touch with via Facebook since, sent me this PM today. Made my evening.

"First (and last?) half marathon today, all around Beaverton. You inspired me to keep going. Don't know how you go so far! It's impressive."

That'll keep me going next time I don't think I can.

Steve's time: 2:21:52.

Dang ...not quite enough to qualify.  Didn't he need a 2:18-19?  I see that time and instinctively think that it's a late race split, but then I realize that it's a full marathon.  So crazy fast.

Good luck to all you Boston marathoners. I am heading into the Grand Canyon with my daughter (camping at Havasau falls) and we wont be out until Wednesday evening. I look forward to reading all the reports when I return.

Thanks, I had a shot at it (I needed 2:19:00 or faster) until 30-32k when a combination of factors took over. I'll have a fairly amusing race report up within the week after I enjoy the rest of this trip. Good luck again tomorrow!

Can I still get an autographed picture?

So cool to follow along with you chasing this dream. Looking forward to the report, sadly I didn't make it up at 2:30 to watch.

Quick update before the Boston marathon boys steal my thunder in a few hours. The chase isn't over. A couple of hours ago I signed up for the Ottawa marathon in 6 weeks where a small group of international / dual citizen runners like me will also be going for the sub-2:19 standard in order to make it to Rio. The plan is to take the next 2-3 days off and then start up with some easy running later in the week. I'll follow a similar training/recovery schedule as I did for the first 3-4 weeks after Houston and then taper. I still believe the fitness is there and want to give it one last shot.

Also, go Tri-man and Nigel!

P.S. Beer30 I still think you are joking about the autograph thing, but I'll get you one, although it might meant more after I knock out my qualifier.

Congrats on the PR!

I find your motivation to keep chasing this dream simply incredible!

I am absolutely not, you're the second coolest famous guy I sorta know vicariously through an anonymous fantasy football site! I want to get in on the grand floor before you become an icon in Taiwan so I can tell everyone I knew him when.

Seems to be some buzz on Facebook about a race today? Anybody heard anything about it?

PS - anybody know Nigel's bib #? Tri's is 16356

I haven't been in this thread in a few years but figured there would be a handful of you guys running today. Just wanted to say good luck, hope everyone hits their goals.

Congrats on the PR SteveC. Glad to hear you are still going for it in 6 weeks.

Good luck to Nigel and Tri-man today!

Not a hint of douchey.  I wouldn't be that humble.
sounds like a great name for a band.  or FF team.

What do you guys do to avoid nipple chafing?  I've heard of people saying "just tape them" but with what kind of tape?
avoid?  #### we pay extra for that.

in all honesty though, I just don't wear shirts that cause chafing.  I have a go-to shirt from 2009 which I wear for most races, never chafed.  a couple others work while I have a couple bright shirts I can wear in training < an hour but beyond that I'll bleed.

Body glide for short distance.  For something long get some clear spot bandages (100 for $4 at CVS) - fold over one edge so they are easily removed and pop 'em on there.  They don't come off and are 100% effective.

I know I'm late to the party.  Anyone know Nigel's bib #?   I've got Tri-man.  Anyone else I'm missing?

Boston marathon race day is always special.

Good luck to those in Boston today!

Getting back into running a bit more and slowly building up with C25k. Have a lot going on in my life right now and have found running to be very cathartic. It seems a 2mi run is a good distance for me right now that challenges enough that I feel it the next day or two (tired legs), but not so much that I feel any actual damage/pain.

I guess I'm wondering what Ideal programming is, and how you should interpret some signs from your body. I feel lately like I WANT to run daily... or most days if possible. Partially for fitness reasons but also partially for the mental health side of things (few better times to just zone out and think). Example being this weekend I ran Thursday (C25k week 3), then Saturday I felt great so went out and knocked out 2 miles fairly easily (averaging 10min/mi which is good for me... but hit a nice stretch of 7m30s for the last half mi or so). I felt great after the run. Sunday I wanted to go longer again but my legs were pretty tired so I went for C25k Week 3 again with the GF and knocked it out without issue. Today my legs definitely feel a bit tired but I'd love to run after work again if possible. When is a good time to run through tired legs, and when is a good time to let them rest. What is a good variance between longer days and sticking with C25k? Or should I just stick to C25K right now?

thanks

They may hate it right now, but that mild headwind they're dealing with is going to be a blessing once they get to the hills.

It came out of a podcast I listened to this week with Gary Robbins. Besides being a total bad ### he coaches 100 mile runners, and one of the things he talked about was practicing in training everything you'll be wearing, using, and drinking and eating. Part of that was getting down 250 calories and hour - he even said he tells his athletes to take 250 calories an hour with them, and if they have any left at the end they have to pound them.

I've had fueling issues in every race 50 miles and up, especially in the heat. I've tried mimicking what I typically do in training and taking in 100-200 calories an hour, and have run low on energy.  And I've tried getting 200-300 calories an hour down and have struggled with stomach issues, maybe because I don't practice doing that. So trying something new here, recommended by a guy who knows of what he speaks. I'm probably not giving myself enough time with just a couple long runs prior to race day to try it, but I've also got Cascade Crest 100 looming in August that I need to get things better dialed in for.
Duck, knowing full well that I'm a novice at this with tons to learn, I figured it worth sharing what's worked for me without fail in my two 50's (and training) so far.  I've been mixing two scoops (200cal) of Tailwind per bottle, and aiming to consume a bottle per hour.  Along with that, I take one Huma gel (100cal) and one S-Cap per hour.  As I've had zero issues from a fueling or gone-south-stomach perspective, I thought I'd pass that along since it aligns with what you're attempting to try out.  I'd think that unless you're totally fat adapted, 100-200cal per hour might just be a bit low for prolonged efforts and it sounds like that minor hourly caloric deficiency is catching up to you at some point.  I know that I couldn't typically do a gel per hour, but I've found Huma to be so much more benign than a lot of the major brand gels that are out there.  The downside is that they're ~$2-2.50/gel.

Yup, that's about what I'm trying to do - a bottle of Tailwind an hour and another gel, that'd put me right at 300.  One gel an hour isn't too bad at all, although I'm also trying out different types.  I hate having to carry a bunch of stuff and try to rely on what's at the aid stations, and I'm lucky in that Tailwind is the drink at my next race.

The S-cap is definitely being added back into the mix as well.  My last 50 I suffered badly towards the end with light headedness during and after, puking afterward, and had all over body cramps all evening - pretty sure it was electrolyte related.  So I'll be doing one per hour, and probably upping that to two during the heat of the day.  Screw Tim Noakes and his "electrolyte supplementation is completely unnecessary" talk.

Wasn't too long after the elites finished up that a guy came across with the hat-on-backwards followed closely by what looked to be a guy running in a pair of bright white KSwiss. Love Boston!
