No, it's different than what your body is used to. My old man harasses me all the time with how wiped out I get walking 18. Similar boat right now. Spent 3 hours this morning running all over the track coaching my oldest's K-2 track meet. Got home, jogged a mile to the baseball field for a coaching clinic. Jogged home then did yard work for about three hours.Btw, is it a bad sign that I'm completely wiped from a few hours of landscaping?
I always have mixed feelings about writing about "failures" in this thread. In some ways the writing helps me personally deal with the mixed emotions of success and failure that I imagine every runner in this thread feels from SteveC to the guys hoping to finish their first 5k. I also hope that some of the lessons I learn about the mistakes I make can be helpful to others. On the other hand, I'm constantly aware that I may be coming across doucheishly. In the end, I've decided to error on the side of open honesty. At Juxt's report. We all get not having our best day, but on yours you win the race going away
Know exactly what you mean. As we improve, our standards get higher. Podium results eventually take a backseat to personal bests. After all, we all really just want to run to best of our abilities when we race.I always have mixed feelings about writing about "failures" in this thread. Completely agree with this, a big reason why we put in as much work in as we do is to get better. Juxt just ran into some tough luck with the conditions last week. I am sure that he wasn't fully recovered for today's race, I know I am not a week after running a half. Ideally I would have raced a 10k myself or run a 6 mile tempo today, but I didn't feel up to it. I decided to run an interval workout that I typically don't have a problem with, 6X 800s, and I had to cut the workout short by an interval.Know exactly what you mean. You had a rough day and it doesn't make you feel any better that no else showed up. I totally get it.
Oh I don't think you came off as douchey at all, sorry if that's what came across in my post. It was more shaking my head in appreciation at the talent that exists in this thread, that people like you can have a bad day and win a race.I always have mixed feelings about writing about "failures" in this thread. Thanks, I had a shot at it (I needed 2:19:00 or faster) until 30-32k when a combination of factors took over. I'll have a fairly amusing race report up within the week after I enjoy the rest of this trip. Good luck again tomorrow!tri-man 47 said:Steve's time: 2:21:52.
Dang ...not quite enough to qualify. Didn't he need a 2:18-19? I see that time and instinctively think that it's a late race split, but then I realize that it's a full marathon. So crazy fast.
Can I still get an autographed picture? Thanks, I had a shot at it (I needed 2:19:00 or faster) until 30-32k when a combination of factors took over. I'll have a fairly amusing race report up within the week after I enjoy the rest of this trip. Good luck again tomorrow!
Congrats on the PR!Quick update before the Boston marathon boys steal my thunder in a few hours. The chase isn't over. A couple of hours ago I signed up for the Ottawa marathon in 6 weeks where a small group of international / dual citizen runners like me will also be going for the sub-2:19 standard in order to make it to Rio. The plan is to take the next 2-3 days off and then start up with some easy running later in the week. I'll follow a similar training/recovery schedule as I did for the first 3-4 weeks after Houston and then taper. I still believe the fitness is there and want to give it one last shot.
Also, go Tri-man and Nigel!
P.S. Beer30 I still think you are joking about the autograph thing, but I'll get you one, although it might meant more after I knock out my qualifier.
No kidding. I love it.Congrats on the PR!
I find your motivation to keep chasing this dream simply incredible!

I am absolutely not, you're the second coolest famous guy I sorta know vicariously through an anonymous fantasy football site! I want to get in on the grand floor before you become an icon in Taiwan so I can tell everyone I knew him when.P.S. Bandaids. Body glide. Vaseline. What do you guys do to avoid nipple chafing? I've heard of people saying "just tape them" but with what kind of tape?

sounds like a great name for a band. or FF team.Brony said:Not a hint of douchey. I wouldn't be that humble.

Body glide for short distance. For something long get some clear spot bandages (100 for $4 at CVS) - fold over one edge so they are easily removed and pop 'em on there. They don't come off and are 100% effective. What do you guys do to avoid nipple chafing? I've heard of people saying "just tape them" but with what kind of tape?
Nigel is 30912.I know I'm late to the party. Anyone know Nigel's bib #? I've got Tri-man. Anyone else I'm missing?
Boston marathon race day is always special.
Duck, knowing full well that I'm a novice at this with tons to learn, I figured it worth sharing what's worked for me without fail in my two 50's (and training) so far. I've been mixing two scoops (200cal) of Tailwind per bottle, and aiming to consume a bottle per hour. Along with that, I take one Huma gel (100cal) and one S-Cap per hour. As I've had zero issues from a fueling or gone-south-stomach perspective, I thought I'd pass that along since it aligns with what you're attempting to try out. I'd think that unless you're totally fat adapted, 100-200cal per hour might just be a bit low for prolonged efforts and it sounds like that minor hourly caloric deficiency is catching up to you at some point. I know that I couldn't typically do a gel per hour, but I've found Huma to be so much more benign than a lot of the major brand gels that are out there. The downside is that they're ~$2-2.50/gel.SFBayDuck said:It came out of a podcast I listened to this week with Gary Robbins. Besides being a total bad ### he coaches 100 mile runners, and one of the things he talked about was practicing in training everything you'll be wearing, using, and drinking and eating. Part of that was getting down 250 calories and hour - he even said he tells his athletes to take 250 calories an hour with them, and if they have any left at the end they have to pound them.
I've had fueling issues in every race 50 miles and up, especially in the heat. I've tried mimicking what I typically do in training and taking in 100-200 calories an hour, and have run low on energy. And I've tried getting 200-300 calories an hour down and have struggled with stomach issues, maybe because I don't practice doing that. So trying something new here, recommended by a guy who knows of what he speaks. I'm probably not giving myself enough time with just a couple long runs prior to race day to try it, but I've also got Cascade Crest 100 looming in August that I need to get things better dialed in for.
Yup, that's about what I'm trying to do - a bottle of Tailwind an hour and another gel, that'd put me right at 300. One gel an hour isn't too bad at all, although I'm also trying out different types. I hate having to carry a bunch of stuff and try to rely on what's at the aid stations, and I'm lucky in that Tailwind is the drink at my next race.Duck, knowing full well that I'm a novice at this with tons to learn, I figured it worth sharing what's worked for me without fail in my two 50's (and training) so far. the dude crushing the first 100 yards (I'd SO want to do that, but even my sprint isn't going to get me ahead of the elites), the wheelchair athletes are phenomenal, Marky Mark playing a cop, just a great event. (alright, so maybe I do want to do it someday...)Yeah, I would love to run this race. I only need to shave off 68 minutes off my marathon time to qualify.(alright, so maybe I do want to do it someday...)
Man, this guy finished in 2:29, good for 28th place overall.A guy in my facebook runner's group is on track for a 2:25 finish. Blazing
Nigel -- 49:33 through 10K
tri-man -- 1:12:35 through 15K
That is ridiculous.Man, this guy finished in 2:29, good for 28th place overall.
