Ran a 10k - Official Thread (8 Viewers)

Kudos to @Steel Curtain! Can't wait to hear all the details!

Meanwhile, I survived a marathon of my own in Vegas yesterday. Woke up around 6am and went for a little 5-mile run. Hit up a breakfast joint with bottomless mimosas and then drank pretty much all day. Back to the room around 5, slept until 9, then got ready and hit the club around 11. Rolled into the room around 4am, wide awake at 8am, and since the wife was still sleeping, back out for another 5-miler. On the plane now ready to head home. I was legit less tired after my race in Indy.

You ok?  Frostbite, snow blindness, blown off the mountain?
Yeah it felt like my own tiny taste of mountaineering.  Should have turned around before the summit but I'm too stubborn.  And one section was a little dodgy with some deep drifts blocking the trail.  Could have gone for a little slide if things went awry.

Definitely the last time I do Moose Mountain this season.  Back in May.

It's going to be 21 degrees for ours and my son will be making his 5K debut.  He hasn't had a lot success in sports and I'm concerned that he won't want to run another one if he has a bad experience.  Should be a learning experience for all of us, his older sisters will have to run on their own without me pacing them.
You know the drill - cover the extremities and throwaway clothes are your best friend.  But, yeah - I'm glad my wife didn't get the idea to make this a family affair.  Our boys enjoy the cold, but racing in it is kinda different.

Too windy.  (And about 10 degrees too cold.)

My trot will be about the same but a little better.  27 degrees/9 mph.
Positive spin, our head wind happens at the right time.  The first 1/2 mile (when you won't notice) and last mile and a quarter (when it's htfu anyway).  Figuring out how to stay warm from pre-race until about a mile in will be a challenge though.

Chicago Lakefront for me this morning. Followed that effort with Stan's donuts for breakfast. Nice start to the week off!

I like the proform tour bikes.  I was looking for one nearby for about that price.  Typically deals on new ones are about $1299- $1499.
She came back this morning saying she'd take $500.

I think I'm on board. But I don't want to pay for the subscription service.

As of today I've run 119 straight days.  I had a longer streak in 2016 -- I think 150 or so.

My last race of the year is Thursday.  It might make sense to take some time off after that.  If I don't, though, perhaps I'll try to keep up the streak until at least after the Chicago Marathon.  That would then be over 400 days.  I think it might be kind of hard to stop after that.

####ing 'nother calf strain post run. Nice start to the week off

@Zasada Yes, go for it!

What’s the longest you’ve run?  My only concern is if the weekly long runs might be too much since you’d be starting off with 17 miles.  That’s a lot of KMs. But, as you mention, you don’t have a clear time goal which makes sense. At a minimum, it will be a great learning experience.
Well as a test case today I ran with the goal of a LSR and managed to grind out 30km.  Kept my HR <145.  I wouldn't win any races at that pace but it was nice to prove that I could do it.  A little bit of cheating because I'm in Amsterdam and therefore getting a bump from being at sea level.

Now under the Hanson Novice 2 plan, I only have six more long runs before attempting a marathon!

Seems easier typing it than doing it...

Oh and BTW I forgot that my colon was still on Calgary time and didn't plan accordingly.  Soon a mighty maple tree will be growing in the Amsterdam forest...

Wait until March and come do Carmel, IN with me. A little more time for some base training and weather should be pretty favorable. And a flat course.
you running the half or full there? I have considered running the half in that one but not sure yet. Did commit to running the Indy 500 half in may with a couple people from work.

Zwift?  Bought a Kickr Snap for my Christmas.  It's going to be a cold winter and I really don't want to be riding in the dark at 40 degrees.

Good luck to you as well!   I'm a maybe for mine.  I would pass if it was today.
I'm out.  Calf is probably about 70% good right now and I wouldn't run tomorrow if there was no race.  Not worth it.   A week ago, I had a couple of runs where sub 6:30 didn't feel too forced, so I did want to see where I'm at.  Maybe next weekend.

That sucks, way to be smart. I have a 5K in the morning, and I hope I decide to take it easy.

I'm still not sure I should be out tomorrow but I'm going to treat it as an easy run and go from there.

It doesn't hurt and hasn't hurt but I have felt "something" after my little trial last week and why I've just stayed off of it. Sucks as weather has been gorgeous and I want to get out there so badly.

Tomorrow will be interesting.

Good luck to the rest of you who go out tomorrow and Happy Thanksgiving to all.

The shirt for my 5k tomorrow is kinda funny.  Naturally I’ll be wearing my “Feast Mode” shirt for the second year in a row.  Mrs. O gets this one like all the others.  Good luck to all the racers tomorrow and Happy Thanksgiving to everyone.

Good luck racers. I’ve been sick with the stomach bug the last few days so I’ve stayed inside. Thanksgiving will just be too cold to comfortably run after being sick so I’ll take the day and try to get out there on Friday.

Race report is coming!!!!

Good luck to all you Turkey Trotters today!  May you earn the calories to offset the gluttony and hit PRs (except you, @gianmarco, you need to take it easy) in the effort!

Don't yell at me, guys....I ran some of it harder than I should have.

Not a great finish time but a successful race. Not really much to report since I didn't go crazy, but, I'm done and the Achilles feels good. If it stays that way tomorrow, I'll be thrilled.  Overall a success.

Started in the back and couldn't help but pick it up after the start as it was downhill, the heel felt good, and it was just great to be out there.  My wife was ahead and I kind of coasted and kept up. After the first mile and I saw a sub 8 pace, I knew I needed to just slow down and relax which I did for the rest of the race. Never looked at HR or any more paces.

After almost 4 miles, the outside of my right knee was hurting and I know it was from a tight IT band. Between not running for 3 weeks, the injury on the left, and it being cold, I wasn't surprised. The course was also really hilly so I just stopped and started walking the hills when it started to ache. I didn't want to risk hurting anything else. Last 2 mile paces aren't great as a result but doesn't really matter. All done and feel good. Right quad tightened up a bit immediately afterwards but all good now.

My HR was out of control, though. Didn't feel that bad out there but my fitness is in the crapper.  I'll start getting back out there and see if I can get it ready for the 15K in a couple weeks. Most importantly, the initial injury feels great and I'm thrilled with that.

Also, just did this after working all night, coming home and going straight out to the race. Not bad, overall.  I'm pretty pleased.

Wife ran a 7:59 pace and had a good race.

Happy Thanksgiving, gents.

30:15- 6 flat pace according to strava.

Inclines massacred me in those conditions - 22 degrees, se wind 10-15 mph. Breathing and heart rate went haywire and had to constantly calm things down once the incline ended and descended or flattened - didnt help that most were into the headwind too. Unfortunate because my legs were popping today and had juice left at the end - sub 6 final mile. Cant control mother nature though.

Happy Thanksgiving, fellow maniacs!

Awesome.

Naperville Noon Lions Turkey Trot Race Report (5K)

This is the last race of the year for me.  I was expecting to PR since I've been racing well this fall.  I set my PR just this September of 17:45.  I've run this race every year since 2015 because my mom likes to run it.  This is the first time, though, that I've extended my training this late in the year.  6,364 finishers.  A large race for a 5K.  There are tons of young, fast runners too -- high school cross country types and other excellent runners in their 20s.  I had no illusions of finishing near the top.  Winner broke 15:00 and the top 14 were all under 16:00.

Weather was a little warmer than expected, about 30 degrees.  About a 10 mph wind that hit us the most in the 1st mile and near the end.

Mile 1 5:36

I started out fine and was feeling good.  This mile is hard to run the tangents well on because there is a winding divided street and there was some congestion.  Even though I was lined up near the beginning, there were a lot of runners Sanding the start and I had to weave around them later.  I was OK with this split.  I wanted to run the miles under 5:40 but I also knew that the Garmin would have this race more than 3.10 so I'd have to try to keep this up.

Mile 2 5:39

I was still passing people but things had thinned out considerably and the course became much straighter.  I was still feeling pretty good and focused mainly on my breathing which was under control.

Mile 3 5:41

I've felt worse in other 5Ks without question.  But I just couldn't stay under 5:40 average lap pace.  My legs just kept slowing down even though I kept trying to push.

Final .15 on Garmin, 5:32 pace

I got passed right around the mile 3 point which was I think the only time I was passed after mile 1.  He was a younger guy so I didn't care much.

Official time 17:41.  PR by 4 seconds. 42/6,364.  1/281 in AG.  Nobody older than me beat me.

I'm satisfied with this one although, to be honest, I was hoping to do a little better.  My mom finished with a 12 second PR at 30:27 and 2nd in her 71-75 AG.  I thought she would PR since she has started routinely running up to 5 miles instead of 3.  She was disappointed to come in second although I think it's funny that she got crushed by about a minute and half.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Congrats to all the turkey trotters, especially to @Juxtatarot on his PR and smoking fast race!

I didn't race yesterday, but I did go get my pre-turkey calorie burn on a local trail loop.  Prior to yesterday, I'd run trails exactly one time in the last  year, and I had to be careful on the downhill sections due to the hard-packed snow, and yet I still managed to PR the loop.  If the weather is nice, I might race a half next Sunday to take advantage of my lingering marathon fitness.

And speaking of races, I decided to take advantage of the Black Friday sale yesterday and sign up for Carmel, which becomes my goal race for the spring.  It's 16 days before Boston, so hopefully that'll be enough recovery time that I can still attempt a course PR in Boston (sub-3:09:48).  My focused 12-week training block starts on January 7.  Giddy up...

Yay!

Achilles a little sore and a little tight, but minimal and already resolved with a bit of stretching.  Success.  Finally feel ready to get out there again as it's going in the right direction.  Friends leave town tomorrow and can get some slow miles in the next couple weeks and hope to regain a bit of fitness and then continue some base training.

Great races by some of you yesterday.  So impressive.

It's oddly comforting to check out the calendar and not even think about scheduling any runs. Confirmation I am ready for a reset period. When yesterday's conditions settled in I thought about deferring to a December race, but I was ready to race and had no interest in training anymore. Throw it all out there and see if I can overcome the elements knowing that I probably wont. And I'm okay with it.

If I finish leaves I'll probably head out Sunday, but rebuilding strength is the new priority. And that begins Monday. Gonna be a sore week, but hopefully this is the only one. Running will be mixed in, but I'm not setting any tangible goals. Schedule the lifts then let the schedule and skies dictate that week's mileage. Not sure exactly when I'll get going again, but I'll be surprised if I get the itch before February sometime.

Also, mental note for the future. The racing line is in the 30's. I dont know where and it depends on what other factors are at play but dry and low 20's are outside the optimum performance zone. Body just has to work too hard at times if it isnt pancake flat with no wind.

Western States lottery details were announced a couple of days ago.  Total entrants are up 19%  from last year to 5,879 vying for the 261 spots.  So with 2 tickets my odds are 3.4%, and with 4 tickets @SayWhat? has a whopping 6.7% chance.  It's really depressing seeing the numbers at the top grow and grow - two years ago there were six people on year 7, and last year all of the 7 year entrants got in.  But this year there are 30 entrants in that bucket, and the simulations show that 10 of them are likely to be left out and possibly become the first 8 year entrants next year.

Hardrock hasn't announced their entrant counts yet, but at year 4 I'm likely to be right around 3% as well.  It'll be at least 4 more years before I have even a 50% chance at that one.  Really wish I hadn't skipped entering the first time I qualified back in 2014. :(

Is anyone on ifit?

I don't think I need it to get benefits from the TDF 4.0 but for the full experience including Map making it seems I'll need to join up. I don't mind paying a little for the next few months but I won't need it come this summer so don't want to lock in an annual membership, monthly looks like $12/month.

I do like the bike so far.

What's crazier - these races or the hoops you jump through to do them?
