I did IF before tri.  It was awesome for me.  However, once I started tri I couldnt keep my energy levels up with it.  I know calroies-in/calories-out but with how much food I did need to consume it didnt work.
I’m starting to think this has been my issue for a long time now. I spoke before about the inconsistency and not knowing why. Well, I think after 3 years, I’ve finally cracked the code. During my training, I was focused on weight loss as well. Since I’ve lost nearly 80 pounds 3 or 4 years ago, I’ve been obsessed with not overeating and putting weight back on.

The past 3 weeks, I’ve kinda let my diet go a bit. Still Vegan, still mostly organic, but I have been eating like an animal. I’ve also started splurging on non-dairy ice cream and Skittles at night. Before I started doing this, I hardly consumed any sugar. Now, I’ve been binging and not really caring about my weight. Abs are now nearly nonexistent, but my runs and overall feeling has been phenomenal. Now it seems like every run is effortless and my watch always pings in with a +3 or +4 performance level at the start. In the past, I maybe had a +3 or +4 twice a month, now I get it every single morning.

So the lesson for the day is, eat a ton of Skittles before bed. Wake up in the morning a BMF.

I subscribe to Marshawn's ideas.

I agree with @JShare87 about not training and focusing on weight loss at the same time though. Similar thought process as not building quality and quantity at the same time. A secondary goal may result as a by-product of the priority goal, but trying to accomplish multiple goals at once is usually a recipe for failure.  This is what led to my still developing mindset that began sometime last year.  If my priority race is November then training season is from June or thereabouts until October.  Everything I do before June is about getting myself to the beginning of training season in best shape as possible - an offseason program. Then everything in the lead-up top the race is driven only by that race.  Compete, decompress, re-assess, then identify the next goal.  But if I want to get better before I start training for that goal I will need another offseason program first.

It could also be that before your body was fighting getting to a new set point and was part of the inconsistency.  Now that you've been at the new weight for 3-4 years your body has accepted the new weight, lowered your RMR and you are more in tune with your body.  I would be careful with adding a bunch of sugar for a couple reasons - 1. it's horrible #### and bad for you and 2. if god forbid do get another injury and can't run then you won't be burning those excess calories and your weight may go up.  Kicking a sugar habit seems almost as hard to me as nicotine but I've never been a smoker so can't really say.

Getting pretty amped up here with a solid month, some fun training on the horizon, and Superior just over six weeks away.  If I stick to my plan this month I will hit a monthly high for mileage, a total which is still embarrassingly low enough that I will not be disclosing publicly.   :lmao:   But hey, I've never considered myself a "runner."

Going to be up at the Cuyuna Mountain Bike Trails this weekend with another family that we're friends with so over the course of three days we'll fit in plenty of trail running, fat biking, boating, and beers.  Then after a short work week I'm off to the north shore the following weekend for a couple days of solo camping and running on the Superior Hiking Trail.  Looking to get about 35-40 miles in over back to back runs on Sat/Sun mornings, which should equate to ~8,000 feet of climbing (vertical which I just can't replicate here in central MN).   Extremely pumped...not only for the running, but just as much for the solitude.  I've also been mixing in a bit more strength training this summer hoping to improve overall fitness and currently sit 4lbs off my targeted race weight, a weight which would put me at the lowest I've been in 20+ years since college.  I'm hoping to PR at Superior (weather permitting), but really aiming to lay a solid base so that once and for all I can maintain/build fitness over the winter months in an attempt to more significantly improve in 2020.

@SFBayDuck - Any tips for running pacerless?  It's looking like that's what I'll be doing at Superior.  I'm feeling both excited (to try this entirely on my own and prove I don't need pacing support) as well as nervous about not having that motivation/rational partner along when darkness falls and the mind starts wanting to limit the body.

Well, hell.

About 5 minutes ago I was getting ready to type the anti @SayWhat? post. I have literally zero motivation to train for a race right now. Mainly because I really don't like my options for a fall marathon in KC. I have the one race I need to conquer at some point, but just don't have the want-to right now.

So clearly there are racing Gods, because right when I was going to type this pity party out I get a notification from my local running store on Facebook of a new half marathon that is on October 6th. I look at the course at it is about as flat of a course as you'll get here in KC.

So now I'm interested. The only downside is I basically have 10 weeks to train for it. Do-able.

Damn You Racing Gods!  <_<

(good god I'm wishy-washy)

I'm accumulating points now with Fleet Feet after connecting my Strava account.  I'm not sure what they translate to yet.
Just a little update here:

I added both the Fleet Feet app as well as the ####'s app.  I earned a $15 Fleet Feet coupon that was expiring today and ended up picking up one of these for $20.  Some brief use of it after watching some videos and this thing could be really good.

Also earned a $10 coupon from ****'s and picked up some BodyGlide for $10.

Not bad for just running like I was otherwise doing.

Sounds awesome man, on all counts.  Especially the weekend away to just camp by yourself and run the trails - that's pretty much my dream weekend.

As for running pacerless, it's definitely a challenge, especially once it gets dark, but I've done it a few times now.  The best thing to do is team up with another racer if you're going around the same pace, and you can sort of help each other out.  But I've also ended up alone for at least a couple of hours during the night at both Grindstone and SD, and that's a little tougher.  At SD I used music for the first time in a 100, that helped.  I didn't turn it on until I was by myself in the dark, grinding out a 7 mile long climb.  I do think I probably end up spending more time in the aid stations without crew or pacer, both because I don't have someone to help and because it can be a mental break from being out there on your own interacting with the volunteers.  I do end up having the conversations I'd have with my pacer as we approach an aid station (what do you need here?  drop bag?  how long are we staying?) with myself as I approach.  Yes, sometimes out loud :bag:

Also, be sure you have extra batteries and an extra light, as you won't have the pacer's lights as backup if something goes wrong with yours.

What’s a good treadmill? Looking to invest in one before winter.

Quick look online shows the Nordic Track 1750 has good reviews and ratings. Not afraid to spend the money on something good. But not gonna buy the Peloton treadmill either. Something good and sturdy.

Any thoughts?

Here's the thing - you need to add fat before you can add muscle. So while it was said in jest more cheeseburgers would probably be a good thing given your current frame if your objective is to add more strength.
I'll buy in.

I was about to say just don't race. Take an off season to hit weights, swim, play tennis, etc. Have fun doing something different.

Or, do the half!

Some of the treadmills at the gym where I go are Woodways.  They are amazing.  Not a lot of bells and whistles but they don't feel like you are running on a treadmill.  So much lighter to land on.  I think they are expensive but maybe there are used ones available.  They are also supposed to last forever.

Funny that this gets brought up. My wife came home today and said she wanted a treadmill. I obviously hate treadmills, but she asked me to do some research. She likes bells and whistles and expensive things but wasn’t willing to spend that much on a Peleton. She just bought a Nordictrack Commercial 2450. Things looks pretty ridiculous. Wasn’t my money but pretty sure I’ll give it a spin once or twice. Hoping she actually uses it. Either way, it will be nice to have in case I want run some intervals every once in a while. I’ll let you know how it is.

At first I was going to say "10 weeks is a lifetime" but then I thought, "hey, I'm running a half that weekend too and it's just a few weeks before the full... Oh crap, 10 weeks isn't that far away!!!"

Yeah, 10 weeks isn't that far away in this game.

Yeah... I feel like I'm heading toward being "ready" but knowing it is like 15 or 16 weeks until I tackle my first full seems like it's "far away right around the corner"... Kind of like how I have felt but almost exactly the opposite at mile 10 or 11 of the HMs I have done. I.e. "The finish is right around the corner about forever away!"

I think we should employ the ChiefD Boner rating system for runs.

Huge PRs should register as a 10/10 on the ChiefBonerRatingScale.  Solid runs in the 6-8 range.  Difficult runs in the 2-3 range.  You get the picture.

My run yesterday morning was definitely a 6/10 on the ChiefBonerRatingScale, for example.
Chief's Unique Boner Brackets?  The CHUBB scale?

Especially when it plummets into the mid 60s outside and it's impossible to get out without extra layers.

I'll admit, Intervals are so much better on the bike trainer. Might apply to the treadmill too.

Yeah, 10 weeks isn't that far away in this game.
Funny, ten weeks from now we'll finally get a vacation (Hilton Head), feels like a lifetime.

What do I get for posting some feel goods about where I’m at just a few short hours ago?  A six mile, wipe-my-a-s-s-on-two-occasions-with-oak-leaves run this evening, that’s what.  😠

You know I was kidding about that pre-run beet juice/beer/skittles smoothie, right?

I have an exciting biking day coming up

One of my biking buddies, he is more of a tour-er (read: bikes slow), have decided to take a biking tour of Martha's Vineyard.  He is a pilot and we will load up our bikes on his plane and fly over in the morning.  Take the 50ish mile tour at a meandering pace while taking in the sites.  Once done we will stop for food and beverages and enjoy the afternoon.  Ive never been to the vineyard so this will be a fun experience for me.
Look at me, I have rich friends.

Have fun JAA, sounds great.

Wait until you are about 4 weeks out and you wake up, look at the calendar, and go: "OH #### THERE ARE ONLY 4 WEEKS LEFT AND AM I READY BUT CANT BE BECAUSE THERE ARE ONLY 4 WEEKS LEFT AND HOW THE HECK AM I GONNA RUN 26.2 MILES WHEN I'M ALREADY EXHAUSTED RUNNING 16 MILES OH MY GAWDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD!!!!!!"

In Chicago for a quick two-day conference, so I met my buddy (who works downtown) for a 10-mile run this morning along the lakefront. Still one of my very favorite places to run.

Got back to the hotel predictably sweaty and was very pleasantly surprised to find a little cart set up in the entrance with towels and bottles of water.  Swissôtel may have just gained a loyal customer. It really is the little things.

Re the treadmill talk, hopefully @Juxtatarot can chime-in.  Any treadmill you can hammer-out 30K on must be a good one.

For me, if I were to get a treadmill, I'd want one that uploaded elevation to Strava.  If that even exists.  I hate that mine doesn't.

Well mine doesn't upload anything to Strava, my watch does, but if I got a new treadmill I'd want one fully Strava-connected.

Wait until race week and it feels WAAAAAY harder than it should running 2-3 miles at goal marathon pace...

I just use one at a gym.  I have no recommendation for home purchase.
Same. Given the amount of money it would cost to buy a good, commercial-grade treadmill, I figure I'm better off spending the money on a monthly gym membership, especially since I'm going there 3-4 times/week for strength work anyway.

Yep. I noticed my wife continuing to struggle maintaining consistency this winter, so I told her next year she should just get a gym membership this December. Use it initially for the dreadmill, but then see if strength training also sticks. If it does then she can just keep it year-round and always have dreadmill options. If it doesn't then cancel come March then repeat next winter.

It'd take a unique situation for me to think a dreadmill is potentially a sound investment.

My wife has started working out in the mornings, so she is more apt to use a treadmill to keep running when the weather is bad. She will not run outside when the weather is really hot or really cold.

And there are certainly times for me when I've bagged runs during extreme weather for safety sake. On top of that, I honestly just hate driving somewhere to run. So we would be getting one purely for the convenience factor.

The way I see it financially, it's at best a break even over the life of the treadmill.

Then you need to have a good maintenance plan.

Woodway in KC

Another one

Thoughts on a Woodway

Woodway review

I'll tell you, the couple times I've tried running at the gym, it's the only treadmill I'll use there and they are truly awesome.  They are very different than any other treadmill I've been on.  Granted, limited experience with that, but still....

This comment from the the letsrun forum sums it up for me:

I have run on countless treadmills in hotel gyms while traveling around the country. I had never once even in major gyms ran on a woodway. They were an object of lore to me. Then I came to my current University where they have at least 20 woodways. Just upon my first quarter mile I quickly realized there was nothing like it. The difference is incomprehensible. I havnt run on a generic treadmill since and have no plans to.

Yep, it's all a part of the journey. This thing you're training for is a totally different animal than anything you have ever squared up with before.
It's still a matter of "just keep putting one foot in front of the other", right? ;)

This Saturday will be my first ever run of > 13.1. Looking forward to it, mostly.

In 2012, my wife wanted a treadmill as an impulse buy and we got one.  $750.  She used it for a while but then it became expensive furniture.

Two years ago when I started this fitness thing, I was using it midweek for all the reasons above, but mostly for the bolded.  Midweek I don't have the time to drive somewhere to run.  And the hassle of having to either bring clothes to a gym to shower there, or get back into my car all sweaty didn't appeal to me.

It also came in handy when the air was to smoky to exercise outside, or in the winter, when the walks were too icy to safely run.

I have probably used our treadmill 50 times, so it's proven to be cheaper and more convenient than the gym.   I'll still do everything I can to avoid using it, but it's nice to have the option when needed.

Sample size of one.

Make sure you are carb loading now. Add an extra sports drink or two before Saturday also. Helps me tremendously.
