Ed Erichson 10 mile Memorial Race – 3/6/22.
This is a small race - maybe 50 people running the 10 mile course. Course is essentially two loops of a 5 mile course. (The 5 mile race starts 15 minutes prior.) Evidently, one decent sized hill around mile 3.5, so I’d hit that again around 8ish.
I had not been running regularly and had lost much of my motivation. I decided I wanted to get out and shoot to run my marathon pace from London (7:10/mile).
Morning routine goes smoothly. I enjoy the smaller races. Not only do you have potential medal mongering as
@tri-man 47 likes to say, but I was also able to park within 50 feet of the start/finish area.
Temps are cool and possible shower is in the forecast. I do a quick warmup (would have preferred a little longer but ran out of time.) I stop by the bathroom to empty whatever is left. Cruise to the start. Wait a couple minutes while I check out the competition. I like to see who is likely to beat me. I only see one other runner that is clearly looking fast – I’ll refer to him as “fast guy”.
For the first 500 feet, there are four of us, myself, fast guy, and two others. I look at my watch and we are doing 6:30 pace, which is way too fast for me. I back off a little and one of the other guys drops off with me, while “fast guy” and another guy who had stocky legs (I’ll refer to him as “soccer guy”) cruise off.
We are two miles in and myself and the other guy are chatting about our race history. His marathon PR is 3:15 (but he also said he drank beer during that race in Philly.) (My PR is 3:10 with no beer.) His half PR is 1:27 and mine is 1:31. He tells me his goal race is actually a half next weekend, so I’ll refer to him as Taper-man.
Mile 1 is
7:06 and mile 2 is
7:07 and we have some light rain which puts a definite chill as its 38 degrees and I’m wearing shorts, singlet, arm warmers and gloves. But it is raw.
Taper-man says, “We are going a bit faster than I’d like.” Within ¼ mile he picks up the pace and drops me.
Taper-man is within sight of me when we are coming up to soccer guy. Taper-man comes up to a split where the 5 mile people go right and the 10 milers go left. I get up to the spot and realize Taper-man went the wrong way (volunteer must have thought he was a slower 5 mile person as there were a bunch of 5 milers with us in this stretch.) I holler to him he went the wrong way.
Mile 3 –
7:02 and at this point, it’s raining quite heavily.
At this point, I’m heading up the hill and catch Soccer guy, which puts me in second place (although if Taper-man and I were close near the end, I would have let Taper-man to pass me to finish in front of me since I wasn’t really the second fastest runner.)
The hill was tough and Taper-man caught me at the top and told me he lost about 17 seconds with that error by the volunteer.
A nice downhill helped me make up some time and finish mile 4 at
7:17.
I’m now trying to pick up the pace a bit as I want to stay close to Taper-Man. Mile 5 is
6:54.
This starts the same loop again. At a turn, I take a look over my shoulder and see 2 people running, probably 500 feet behind me.
This is motivation enough to run miles 6 and 7 at
6:49 and
6:57. The rain is letting up a little here after a solid 20 minutes of heavy rain.
At the base of the hill I take another peek and there is a guy probably 40 feet behind me.
Mile 8 with the hill in part of it ends up being
7:20. At the top of the hill, I’m huffing and puffing and the guy catches me. The rain has stopped but I’m fully soaked from head to toe.
He stays right behind me on my shoulder as mile 9 ticks off at
6:53. He then passes me and I can’t stay with him. He pushes ahead and picks up the pace for a very strong finish and a definite negative split.
My final mile clocks in at
7:00. I come around the bend and into the parking lot of the town hall which is the finish area. When I first see the clock, it says 1:09:51. I push but it wasn’t enough to go sub 1:10 as I finished
1:10:02 and in fourth place.
Fast guy won the race in 1:05:32. Taper-man came in second at 1:08:30. The guy who passed me around mile 9 finished at 1:09:28. Of course, all these guys were in my 50-59 age group. Since you can’t double dip in prizes, Fast guy got the first place trophy, then the next three get places in AG. So I finished 3rd in my age group (which really doesn’t make sense to me, but whatever.)
Also, Soccer guy finishes in 7th place with a 1:13:40.
Overall, pleased with the effort and the result. Obviously, its a long way from running 26.2 at this pace, but this helped to get the juices flowing a bit.
