is that lump/box on the top tube behind the stem a place to stash your drugs? or is it to go into stealth anti-radar mode?

I feel like an absolute dope linking my 15yo bike now... your new ride is completely filthy.

eta: and you need to post some pics of it. are you going to sleep with it?
It holds gels/spares/tools, pretty cool setup.

I thought your bike was sweet, no reason to feel like a dope.

quite a different feel riding this over any other bike I’ve ridden.  My ummm belly is an issue but other than that pretty comfortable and generating power was easier than on my other bike.  Going to take a while to get used to this position.

ah- so a bento box, just built in for aero. I have the same thing... but mine is velcroed on.

I'm not very flexible- never have been, regardless of fitness level going back to when I was a kid. limits my ability in the water- I can't get long and straight with my shoulders and reach. and it limits the degree of aero position I can do.

tri-guys usually notice two things right away about my bike, including a Lightspeed Saber (ti) I had before the QR that got run over by a 1971 Ford F150 that came inches from getting me (and essentially put an end to my tri career). 1: I use 650s... that was the trend when I started- supposedly about increased ground contact and higher ability to spin- likely been disproved since I don't see 650s around any more. 2: I left the stem cut really high, putting the aerobars high and limiting the amount of tuck down into aero I do. not optimal for aero- but I physically just couldn't hold a deeper tuck the way I see most tri-folk do.

but yeah- when I switched from my road bike to the Lightspeed (which still had round tubes, just slightly different geometry and of course aerobars), it was crazy how much easier it felt to crank on it.

What's your schedule for races? (just writing that got me all giggity about tris again, even if those days have sailed).

There’s a half Ironman not too far from me in August that I’d like to try this year if I can get ready in time.

https://peasantman.com/

Going to depend on work and kids stuff if I can find time to train.

Ultimate goal is placid Ironman event but that is next year at the earliest.

I've had a pair of Endorphin Pros sitting in a box for a couple of months.  Inspired by @Zasada's kickass HM (and gear), I broke them out.

Holy hell...these are nice/fast/fun.  Way different feel than other shoes and even the Hoka Carbon X.

@gianmarco - great suggestion  :hifive:

Pick up a pair of the Speeds to train in.  Just as good, if not better, IMO (and cheaper).

When is your half marathon?  Your HMP runs have looked strong, setting yourself up for a nice PR.

I see a 1:40 on his Strava best efforts -- yeah, he should go well below that at his goal pace.

That was the @ChiefD HM event.  There was no extra mileage on that since it's a best effort, so that time is a little deflated.  But, I'm definitely in better shape now than I was then.  And, that was a solo race/run, so the other runners should hopefully help pull me along.

Swear I was not trying to move past bushdocda by 1 minute on the leaderboard  :lmao: .  Shouldn't matter, though, as I switched Sunday's run to today and am pushing the long run to Sunday, as I will be taking a 0 tomorrow for family stuff.  Still, it was fun to be on top for a bit (twss).

The 🐐 (among others) is racing the Tokyo Marathon 7ish eastern tonight, Sunday in Japan. Looks like only streams on flotrack subscription site so that stinks.

Signed up for a 10 mile race tomorrow.  Temps should be around 40 but very windy.  My initial goal is to try to run my marathon pace (7:10) and somehow hold on for 10 miles. No idea if that’s realistic with winds and evidently a couple notable hills.

Race starts at 9:15 eastern and there is no tracking.

RF; DBAP

Good luck!!

It’s prettier in person.  It showed up with some of the wrong components, they offered a full refund and ship it back or a $500 credit, I asked for $1000 and we settled on $750.  Just finished getting it in the trainer and about to test it out.
That’s a sweet looking ride

Ran a 7:02 pace.   4th overall - small race. RR to come.

Hi 10K FBG guys.

I don't know if you remember me, but I used to run a little. Then I stopped. Well, I started running again. So hi.

5 days last week and hit 20 miles!!! For perspective, it's crazy how insignificant that number is but seemed like I ran a ton.

Anyway, in preparation for the relay in June, I figured I should actually train so here I am. Goal of 5+ runs/week, build up to 30 mpw. I know 35-40+ would be ideal, but just trying to be realistic as my mindset to run and train is different than it was. That said, I'm ready to do this.

As I was out there yesterday, I thought of the fact that training for a race is going through a whole lot of days that suck so that one day doesn't suck. So, here goes my attempt to have a day later on that doesn't suck.

The good news is that you already got through the part that sucks the most, the first week after a lot of time off. This week will suck as well, just a little less than last week. Next week will suck is less and so forth. Hopefully you’ll get to the point where it barely sucks and you just have to show up every day. Then you’ll introduce one sucky day a week where you do a workout because you want to get faster or miss the suck.

We all go through a few of these cycles until we do whatever we can to avoid going through that first week of suck. Seriously congrats for getting through that first week, it really does suck but it’s worth it. At least you aren’t attempting to start back up in the heat of summer.

Ed Erichson 10 mile Memorial Race – 3/6/22.

This is a small race - maybe 50 people running the 10 mile course.  Course is essentially two loops of a 5 mile course. (The 5 mile race starts 15 minutes prior.) Evidently, one decent sized hill around mile 3.5, so I’d hit that again around 8ish.

I had not been running regularly and had lost much of my motivation.  I decided I wanted to get out and shoot to run my marathon pace from London (7:10/mile).

Morning routine goes smoothly.  I enjoy the smaller races.  Not only do you have potential medal mongering as @tri-man 47 likes to say, but I was also able to park within 50 feet of the start/finish area.

Temps are cool and possible shower is in the forecast. I do a quick warmup (would have preferred a little longer but ran out of time.)  I stop by the bathroom to empty whatever is left.  Cruise to the start.  Wait a couple minutes while I check out the competition.  I like to see who is likely to beat me.  I only see one other runner that is clearly looking fast – I’ll refer to him as “fast guy”.

For the first 500 feet, there are four of us, myself, fast guy, and two others.  I look at my watch and we are doing 6:30 pace, which is way too fast for me.  I back off a little and one of the other guys drops off with me, while “fast guy” and another guy who had stocky legs (I’ll refer to him as “soccer guy”) cruise off.

We are two miles in and myself and the other guy are chatting about our race history.  His marathon PR is 3:15 (but he also said he drank beer during that race in Philly.) (My PR is 3:10 with no beer.)  His half PR is 1:27 and mine is 1:31.  He tells me his goal race is actually a half next weekend, so I’ll refer to him as Taper-man.

Mile 1 is 7:06 and mile 2 is 7:07 and we have some light rain which puts a definite chill as its 38 degrees and I’m wearing shorts, singlet, arm warmers and gloves.  But it is raw.

Taper-man says, “We are going a bit faster than I’d like.”  Within ¼ mile he picks up the pace and drops me.

Taper-man is within sight of me when we are coming up to soccer guy.  Taper-man comes up to a split where the 5 mile people go right and the 10 milers go left.  I get up to the spot and realize Taper-man went the wrong way (volunteer must have thought he was a slower 5 mile person as there were a bunch of 5 milers with us in this stretch.)  I holler to him he went the wrong way.

Mile 3 – 7:02 and at this point, it’s raining quite heavily.

At this point, I’m heading up the hill and catch Soccer guy, which puts me in second place (although if Taper-man and I were close near the end, I would have let Taper-man to pass me to finish in front of me since I wasn’t really the second fastest runner.)

The hill was tough and Taper-man caught me at the top and told me he lost about 17 seconds with that error by the volunteer.

A nice downhill helped me make up some time and finish mile 4 at 7:17.

I’m now trying to pick up the pace a bit as I want to stay close to Taper-Man.  Mile 5 is 6:54.

This starts the same loop again.  At a turn, I take a look over my shoulder and see 2 people running, probably 500 feet behind me.

This is motivation enough to run miles 6 and 7 at 6:49 and 6:57.  The rain is letting up a little here after a solid 20 minutes of heavy rain.

At the base of the hill I take another peek and there is a guy probably 40 feet behind me.

Mile 8 with the hill in part of it ends up being 7:20.  At the top of the hill, I’m huffing and puffing and the guy catches me. The rain has stopped but I’m fully soaked from head to toe.

He stays right behind me on my shoulder as mile 9 ticks off at 6:53.  He then passes me and I can’t stay with him.  He pushes ahead and picks up the pace for a very strong finish and a definite negative split.

My final mile clocks in at 7:00.  I come around the bend and into the parking lot of the town hall which is the finish area.  When I first see the clock, it says 1:09:51.  I push but it wasn’t enough to go sub 1:10 as I finished 1:10:02 and in fourth place.

Fast guy won the race in 1:05:32.  Taper-man came in second at 1:08:30.  The guy who passed me around mile 9 finished at 1:09:28.  Of course, all these guys were in my 50-59 age group.   Since you can’t double dip in prizes, Fast guy got the first place trophy, then the next three get places in AG.  So I finished 3rd in my age group (which really doesn’t make sense to me, but whatever.)

Also, Soccer guy finishes in 7th place with a 1:13:40.

Overall, pleased with the effort and the result. Obviously, its a long way from running 26.2 at this pace, but this helped to get the juices flowing a bit.

Other than the biting head wind today was the first easy run that didn't suck since about August.

Glad you’re back out there! What day is the relay?

@-OZ-   My daughter just texted me a screenshot of a promotional pic for St. Jude's featuring six cute kids and asked, 'isn't M-K your friend's daughter?'  Why yes; yes she is!!

I'm still not running very much but I did accept @gruecd's invitation to join the push-up challenge and have made my way up to 100 each day now... so I've got that going for me. Feels good and it's a start. Also getting the eating back in order and starting to feel a little better. Now just need to make time for the running part on a regular basis instead of just being extremely sporadic...

Informal poll - when measuring body fat, would you believe the “bod pod” or a bio electrical scale?

got measured in both today, one was double the other. Depending on your source, one in the health range, the other not.

Personally, whichever gave me the higher number. More likely to be accurate in my case.

Bod pod would be my guess for the more accurate by a long shot.

PSA - The Barkley Marathons started the other day. A record thirty runners made it out on loop 2, but only 5 of them made it out for loop 3. One guy had one of his book pages blow out of his hand during the rainy, windy night, so he was out even though he finished the loop. Another finished loop 2 in time but couldn’t make it out of camp in time to start loop 3.
I’ve only sporadically been following, have been down in Key West and now South Beach since last Friday on vacation. But my suspicion is that we have another zero-finisher Barkley.

the 'bod pod''s are supposed to be a lot more accurate - and from my experience, is probably the lower number.

thanks, and yes. It is lower.
last time I did the bod pod test was May 2019. I’ve gained 8 lbs, 1.16 of which is fat. According to the pod, I’m at 188 lbs and 7.9% BF.
this was the first time doing the BIA, it shows 15.6% body fat. I think I’m probably somewhere between the two. The nurse said she would go with the pod.

Yeah, no ####.

At my physical every year I get this test done and have been in the 15-17% range.  Despite looking like a long-term POW-camp resident.  This was with the Bod Pod.

The last two years, my test was performed with the gold standard -- full body composition scan.  Still just under 15%.

So, the Bod Pod seems pretty accurate.

My doctor tells me that my 15% includes my organs/brain (look at me!) and other non-muscle/non-bone elements, so excluding that stuff I'm more like 7%.  But 15% has always been a head-scratcher for me.

I am definitely lacking in muscle (thanks for those genes mom & dad) but at 6'6" and 167lbs, it's hard to see how 25lbs of my weight is fat.  So the 7% must be the more important number.

Yeah I've been following on Twitter as well.  How is it that every year they seem to get rained on?  Can't they catch a break one year and just have decent weather?  I can't even imagine how much it sucks to be in those conditions.

Oh and a nice coincidence this morning.  Seeing a @SFBayDuck post, and this:

After my run, and as I was getting ready for work, I was wondering if I should actually run Miwok at the beginning of May.  I am signed-up only because of that moment of delusional overconfidence (after I slipped on a run and hit my head) in 2019.  Two COVID-cancelations/deferrals later, and here we are with it on my calendar in May 2022.

After Bandera in January, I thought there was no way I would run Miwok in May.

But now that Bandera is fading in my memory, and I'm feeling good about my Vegas HM, part of me wants to run Miwok.  It looks beautiful.  It's paid-for.  And it would be a carrot to keep me active for the next 6 weeks.

So yeah, I'm on a running thread, asking runners "should I run?"  @SFBayDuck?
