RB D’Andre Swift, CHI (1 Viewer)

Your post ignores the fact that Gainwell came on strong at the end of the year and was splitting carries with Sanders by the end.
He was?

In the last 6 games of the regular season Gainwell averaged 2.5 carries & 2.3 targets.

Sanders had 13.7 & 1.3.

Gainwell had an amazing game vs the Giants in the playoffs with 112 yards on 12 carries. He was the best RB that game. He followed that up with 67 yards on 21 carries over the next two games.

He was literally a non factor in 19 of 20 games.

Yes. Throughout the year, local beat writers kept saying that the Eagles coaches were raving about Gainwell in practice. Then, by the playoffs, he was splitting carries with Sanders. So his coming on isn't a stat thing that you can see, it's a work habits, doing good things in practice thing.
I think you're reading way too much into the playoffs.

Gainwell had one good game (a game where Sanders was also excellent), immediately turned into a pumpkin the following week and then the RBs were mostly abandoned in the Super Bowl.

You can call it a playoff timeshare but it also looked a lot like changing gameplans.

For a guy who was being raved about all year it simply didn't translate to the field.

Here's some more information for you then. The Eagles have been using Gainwell with the first team offense in camp for 3rd downs and goal line packages. They have every intention to use him in their game plan this season.
Oh I, have heard and commented as much.
To be fair, Gainwell seems to be getting a ton of positive press this off season and we really have no idea what to expect from the Eagles RBs this season.

I think the plan is for Swift to be the lead back but would not be at all surprised if his share was a lot closer to 50% instead of the 67% Sanders got last year.

Swift seems like the kind of back that needs to be on a snap count.
But, to this point I think it is reasonable to say that Swift has shown worlds more as an NFL player than Gainwell. And the Eagles seem eager to have him on the roster considering they were willing to trade for him rather than lose him to another team.

Swift doesn't seem built to be a 285 touch guy so I am certain Gainwell and Scott & Penny will factor in to the offense. But, isn't the smart money on Swift to lead this backfield (obviously while healthy)?

What do you predict Gainwell's usage to be per game? 10 opportunities? More? Would you draft him ahead of Swift?

I posted above:

My educated guess on the season will be, they'll use Swift a bunch early with Gainwell sprinkled in. Swift will get dinged up. They'll then dress Penny in place of Swift with Gainwell sprinkled in. Penny get dinged up. Then they'll go with Gainwell with Boston Scott sprinkled in until Swift is ready again. Then they'll go back to Swift with Gainwell sprinkled in. Swift will get dinged up again. It will be an endless cycle of Swift and Penny getting dinged up with Gainwell being sprinkled in and sometimes used as the lead.

If I had to guess on distribution I'd think something like this:

Swift: 150-175 carries, 50-55 receptions
Gainwell: 100-125 carries and 30-35 receptions.
Penny: 75-100 carries and 5 receptions
Scott: 50 carries and 5 receptions
I was a big fan of Swift when he was in DET - even drafted him on a dynasty team. But this is too many carriers and targets IMO for Swift. Penny, if healthy, I think will get more than 100 carrier.

I still think this backfield will be a PITA to try to figure out week to week and the game plan will dictate it. Are the passing more? Are they ahead with big lead? Are they in the red zone a ton? All this will determine which RB is on the field at any given time.

It honestly wouldn't surprise me if they gave Penny 175-200 carries this year. He's probably the biggest pure runner of the group.

What if Scott gets more carries and targets now with Sanders gone? Back to the years he was getting 80 carries and 25-35 targets? He's the most veteran player on that team and the coaches trust him.

I do appreciate everyone's thoughts on this but most is "hoping" what will happen. Could what you posted happen? Sure it is a possibility but I think Penny and Scott could be low on the carries list as they have the most NFL experience. Swift's usage depends on if he does what the coaches want - if he does he will earn more time as he is very explosive. But if he doesn't, the vets will be getting more work and reps.

Swift had 151 carries and 62 receptions in 2021 so he's certainly capable of hitting those numbers. If you have questions about Swifts targets, Penny getting 175-200 carries is a HUGE question mark since his career high is 119 and that was the only time he ever topped 100 carries.

I'm not even sure Penny will be suited up on Sunday, if he is, the Eagles will be dressing 4 RBs and Penny doesn't play special teams like Boston Scott does. So he'll basically be in there as the 3rd or 4th RB.

I'm basing my guess on how they were used in the preseason. Penny was used quite a bit with Trey Sermon. The other backs barely played. That leads me to believe Penny is behind all those guys.

Penny & Scott have more years in the league (5 to 3) but Swift has more experience than both. Penny is close though.

IMO Scott is a non factor barring injury. Not sure how he packs 200+ lbs on a 5'6" frame but he's an average back, at best who wasn't drafted by the current coaching staff.

Penny is a legit runner when available. I can't take anything away from him as a runner and won't try. He seems limited as a receiver and they got him cheap but I expect him to see regular work on this offense...unless the Eagles decide he's an insurance policy who doesn't play special teams and make him inactive on game day.

Gainwell is another, potentially significant concern, particularly in the passing game.

I like Swift but this thread has given me reason to pump the breaks enough not to start him this week but I'm cautiously optimistic about this season.

That is my feeling as well. Penny feels a little bit like an insurance policy against Swift getting hurt.

But I am not following practice reports so maybe those tell a different story.

Scott is a core special teamer and a lock for at least one touchdown in any game against the New York Football Giants.

I meant a non-factor as it relates to taking a significant share of the primary RB duties.

I am starting Swift. .5 ppr league. Length of TD matters significantly as well. Gainwell slipped late in the draft, so i have him also. So this means Penny will dominate the touches.

lol wasn't five minutes earlier I was hearing about Penny being the 1st and 2nd down guy today and then I see Penny expected to be inactive. So yeah 2023 is here!

Swift will give you some great games. Would be surprised if he gave a great season. But it is a contract year, and that will motivate him. He should be a solid play this week.
