The other place I have him, (for now) I have the depth to cover for him. I think I'd have Perine as the main guy to roster in any sort of PPR league but don't think either is going to be better than an RB2-3 or flex play. Not really a "to the moon" situation IMHO.

Agreed. Teams like the Chiefs (and 49ers) can win a lot of games without their feature RB. No need to rush these guys back. Both teams are eyeing Super Bowl, not "desperate to make the playoffs"... they will be overly cautious with Pacheco's injury IMO.

I feel very fortunate to have Steele in 11 of my 14 dynasty money leagues. I spent like 90% of my BBID bucks on him before week 1. And the 3 leagues I don’t have him I have Mason. So I hate injuries but this year I’m very lucky/prepared. I felt like I was watching John Riggins run when I watched his preseason games. But not gloating about Pacheco I love how hard he runs and hate this for him.

I am not saying this as gospel for this situation however, many times when in game injuries happen the way the gameplan was prepared for has more to do with who did what during and after the injury than the injury itself. Once the injury happens and a coaching staff has time to prepare for the new reality what happened in that last game isn't necessarily what will happen moving foward.

I agree that Perine is a jag, but a jag is the best you can get sometimes. He's probably a better runner all-around than Steele. Perine could possibly be the "direct backup" to the starter, while Steele would be the short-yardage guy.

It's hard to see a team being able to build a running game around him but he is better than people give him credit for, particularly in the passing game.

All things considered, his foot wasn’t twisted backwards, no bones sticking out - the report of a “gruesome” injury is a bit overstated.

Dude limped off the field unassisted. That’s literally the least gruesome broken bone injury I’ve ever seen. Even the tackle looked fairly benign. The hip drop on Mixon looked far far worse.

I’d expect him back in 6-8 weeks. The big issue IMO will be conditioning once the bone has mended.

I thought it looked worse than Mixon did. Mixon got rolled and turned sideways, Pacheco went all the way back, with his legs trapped. He's probably droppable in thinner leagues.

In dynasty, I'd probably trade any of those guys except Pollard for Pacheco. Pollard is really good, and its looking like 2023 was an injury recovery/aberration season. Bengals/Bears wish they'd signed Pollard instead of the guys they did.

I traded him away late last year in only dynasty league I had him and the redraft leagues I play are 20 roster sized mid/high stakes leagues. If this was a 16 roster size local league I'd be thinking of chopping him, but in this format I'll find you a roster spot for the upside he offers during the most crucial time of the fantasy season.

Isiah Pacheco - injury update

Right ankle fracture Specifically the fibula bone.

This could be in 1 of 3 places Near the ankle (avulsion) At the ankle joint (most concerning) Next to the tibia/shin Sometimes this is accompanied by a high-ankle sprain.

The specific location of the fracture will determine if he needs surgery (likely) and how long he will be out.

Note, the fibula is only responsible for 15-20% of body weight, so you can walk on a fractured fibula.

Problem is it articulates/makes up the ankle joint, so it needs to be stable.

This is similar to what happened to Tank Dell in 2023, as well as Mark Andrews but he likely also had a high-ankle sprain.

Return to play could range from 4 weeks to 12-weeks (season-ending).

Think Tony Pollard. Almost all fractured fibulas need surgery, and very few do not. Ligament damage is also possible; from what I saw, it is likely. The fracture location determines if surgery is needed; if multiple fractures/ligament damage are present, surgery is 100%. It is unlikely he will be back this season, and if so, he won't be the same. It will take rehab and healing time. There are a lot of factors involved that we won't know.

If he is one of the few who do not need surgery, he may come back sooner. Tony Pollard had tightrope surgery; from what I heard, that is less invasive, but still, it is surgery. The surgeon who performed two surgeries for my broken fibula said he likes to explain it is possible not to need surgery, but in most cases, he deals with, they almost always need surgery. Stability is the main issue. You have to stabilize the bone while it heals, which could mean a plate and screws for stabilizing. Of course, do any ligament repair while you are in there. Then, wait for the bone and ligaments to heal through time and rehab and see how it goes. The ligament healing is a longer process. If he had ligament damage, the damage would also be a factor.

Another problem is the hardware. I had multiple pieces of hardware. I elected to remove the hardware that was used to stabilize the bone during the healing process, which meant a very less invasive surgery. I then left the deeper hardware in my leg to avoid the second surgery being much more extensive. In both cases these young men are much younger and in better shape than myself. I would pay attention to the type of surgery reported and whether he has hardware. If he does have the hardware, he will need to decide if that hardware needs to be removed, which means a 2nd procedure. This could be 12-16 weeks, and we may not see him be his old self till sometime next season. I'm just guessing, but I see two surgeries in his future unless he goes the Tony Pollard route. I have no idea what makes someone eligible for that.

Maybe. I don't think they put him on IR for exactly that reason. Why tie him up an extra week? Bone injuries are way more predictable. The bone heals in time or it doesn't. That's one the human body does a remarkable job of fixing.

Google says it takes 6 weeks. This guy is a super athlete and will be ready in 5 weeks with some kind of specialized protection and pitch count.

Pacheco's violent running style always reminded me of Marion Barber, whose career was shortened because of it. Barber started out as a TD vulture and compliment to Julius Jones and then had about three seasons of bell-cow volume before the wheels fell off.

If he can avoid surgery, and depending on the time it takes for the bone to heal, the bone healing and rehab should take longer than six weeks. I can not see how he avoids the IR in any way, shape, or form. There also could be ligament damage. Six weeks seems like an outlier. It is not impossible, but so many factors would have to be in his favor. I hope Google is correct, but I would make plans for him to be out for the rest of the season.
