RB Melvin Gordon, BAL (18 Viewers)

So I watched the Charger game tonight. Throughout the course of the game they discussed the running back situation at several points. The words used were committee, running back group, and hot hand. In particulary the showed an interview with McCoy where he explicitely stated they would use a running back committee and that if someone got hot, they'd ride the hot hand. They later interviewed Telesco (the Charger GM) and he spoke mainly about Woodhead - his versatility and how they like to use him in the red zone because he's a tough match up. Seems to me that people should probably not draft Gordon with the assumption that he'll be a feature back.

Most Charger fans were wondering why you give up three draft picks for a part time RB less than an hour after he was drafted! All that nonsense about "bell-cow" RB must have been made by talking heads on the national stage because anyone that was familiar with the McCoy offense could have told you he wasn't going to use anyone as a three down back. Even if Woodhead were to get hurt, Gordon won't be used as a three down back.

Part time RB, part time ILB, 4th(5th?) CB.... some of us have been complaining about this entire draft for "weeks".

We’re going to have to accept that Gordon will probably be eased into his NFL career.

That’s how it should be, especially on this team.

That Gordon will be limited in his workload has nothing to do with the fact the first-round pick averaged less than 2.3 yards on his 20 preseason carries. It has to do with the Chargers having Danny Woodhead and Branden Oliver and with what has become the norm in the NFL.

Really, Gordon better have some big weeks. If he doesn’t, there will be a problem. He was a first-round pick.

But we should manage our expectations according to reality.

Luckily 'Gunz and I are going to judge a RB by his bicep size. Best biceps since Boston. Maybe trivia knowledge of Gaelic poetry? How well he cooks an omelette?

... or is Rivers suggesting we base expectations on how well he blocks? Put the gun down 'Gunz!

 
I think this is the week against vikes. should be close scoring wise and a chance to let him in there and see what he's got. yes, I'm an owner....

 
He's gonna be a star. Would have liked to see a little more break away speed on his bustouts last week. But looks like he has got "it" factor.

I own him and I am a Wisc fan so bias abounds.

Gordon rotated about evenly with Danny Woodhead before the final drive, which was a two-minute drill handled all by Woodhead. The rookie lined up at wide receiver on several plays, suggesting the Chargers are beginning to trust Gordon in passing-type scenarios. Gordon also got a goal-line carry in the fourth quarter, but was unfortunately stuffed. San Diego's backfield is very clearly a timeshare and Woodhead isn't going away. Gordon is a lower-end RB2 entering a Week 5 date with the Steelers.

Bust game. They had a 1st and goal and he was stuffed. Next play they throw it and score. Its like they have no trust in this guy.

LOL at the bolded. Or it might have had to do with the fact that the Chargers were missing their #2 (Floyd), #3 (Johnson), and #5 (Jones) WRs plus their #1 TE (Gates).

 
He's unstartable for FF purposes behind this line and with Woodhead basically taking 50% or more of the RB reps.

 
even if woodhead were to get hurt wouldn't they just slide the newly re-signed donald brown in to woodhead role? in redraft i'm almost at the point where i have to drop him

Oliver would probably get at least half of those snaps, but Brown is better in pass protection, so he would get some, too. Gordon's snaps would probably increase, but not much.

 
He deserves more reps. Rivers likes to throw. I've seen him throw with only 6 or 7 guys on the line. Would seem ideal to audible to a run but he throws it anyway.

Combination of factors here. Gordon is a rookie, the O line isn't great, Woodhead is playing well, the offense seems to be pass first.

Gordon's peeled off some nice runs of ~20 yards, almost taking a couple to the house. He'll be ok. Just maybe not this year for FF purposes.

 
At what point do we start to worry about this guy? I have him in one dynasty league because I had the #4 rookie pick and White/Cooper/Gurley were all gone. It's still really early in his career, but he isn't showing me much. Held below 4 YPC in 4 of 5 games so far. From what I have seen in the preseason and regular season, he struggles when the holes collapse because he isn't elusive in tight quarters. He also seems to go down on first contact pretty easily.

The offensive line is horrific. That said, I don't see him being an all time great either. Another problem for him will be the way they utilize him and Woodhead. I don't see him being a regular visitor in the top 5 fantasy RBs over the course of his career.

 
I thought he looked pretty good. There was nowhere to go most of the time and he fought for yards over and over. Hard to tell cause that oline is putrid.

There were multiple plays where he had to beat one guy or break one arm tackle to lead to a decent size gain and he basically never did. Compare him to Gurley and he comes up very, very short.

Compare anyone to Gurley and they come up short. He was good tonight. He ran hard, broke several tackles and moved well in tight space. He hasn't looked good all year but tonight isn't the night to pile on. It was impressive.

Compare anyone to Gurley and they come up short. He was good tonight. He ran hard, broke several tackles and moved well in tight space. He hasn't looked good all year but tonight isn't the night to pile on. It was impressive.

He showed what he could do with some space in the receiving game.
 
Good game for Gordon tonight. Got more action than he's got just about all year. He's near tops in the leagues in long runs from scrimmage. It'll come. Redraft struggle, keeper/dynasty gold.

 
That SD O-line is Denver level awful. The biggest positives I saw tonight we're if you look at his weekly touches, it keeps rising as he gets more chances in this offense. This week was no different, had his most carries so far.

I am also very encouraged by the fact that he is getting trusted a lot more in the passing game. Had 7 catches tonight. In a ppr, he was a decent play tonight. He outcaught Woodhead and the gap is slowly shrinking in terms of passing down snaps.

 
I doubt he's taken over Woodhead's role. The Steelers are not a good defense and I tend to think that Gordon was used more for his speed than Woodheads quickness. Gamescript. Then again Gordon looked pretty good running the ball too so it's hard not to be encouraged by his workload last night regardless of your view.

What I saw was lots of collapsed holes that there was no way he was getting through, but he did what he could on most runs. Then there were some that if he slipped 1 tackle here and there he would have had a much better night with the yardage some of us are expecting. I tend to think his time will come, sort of like a trial year and getting feel for it (and he hasn't looked horrible doing that) so I'm optimistic about his future. Patch that o-line and he's a top10 RB easy. Right now he's a fringe RB2 in my mind.

I agree with this. Gordon made the most out of his opps IMO. There just wasn't much room for him to run. Nonetheless, he did a nice job running thru initial contact and slithering his way to yards on his runs. He made a cut on an off tackle run that was pretty beautiful. 2 defenders had him dead in the rights and he made a shape cut to split them and move forward for like 4 yards. Small gain, but it should have been no gain. It was a great move in tight space.

I really don't understand how people can view last night as a poor performance.

And it was not a good result. He averaged 2.8 ypc, he fumbled, and he was terrible in pass blocking (to that point that Gruden commented on it during the game). The Chargers lost the game, and his play was a significant contributing factor.

I expect the snaps to flip back to Woodhead going forward. At least that is what should happen.

Reasons one could view it as a poor performance:

1. Averaged 2.8 ypc.

2. Fumbled.

3. Terrible in pass protection. Gruden commented on it. PFF gave him a -0.8 pass blocking rating just for this game, which is awful.

4. Had a drop.

Sure, the OL was a problem, and that mitigates #1 to some degree. But that doesn't excuse these other issues.

 
I'll grant that he runs hard but with no vision or creativity. Heads for the hole and if it's not there he still heads for the hole. Didn't break any tackles that I remember.

The box score and his usage in the passing game look encouraging so this looks like a good selling opportunity.

The fumble was not a "significant contributing factor." Steelers went 3 and out and punted it back. No damage done.He was also right back in there and outsnapped Woodhead significantly from there on.

1. I said his play, not just the fumble, was a significant contributing factor. He touched the ball 23 times and fumbled, dropped a pass, whiffed in pass protection, and averaged 2.8 ypc. How could anyone disagree that his play significantly contributed to the loss? IMO the team would have been better off giving Woohead more of those snaps.

2. The fumble did contribute, because it stopped a drive. Fumbling was a known issue for him in college, and he has now fumbled twice in 5 games. It's a problem that he needs to correct.

Exactly what I saw. Absolutely no vision and falls down on first contact. Plows right into the line or wherever the run calls for.

as a gordon owner, i dont like the facts presented, but i liked the post for accurately depicting the game action :(
