RB Travis Etienne, JAX (2 Viewers)

Starting with confidence. The alternative is James Robinson coming off the dreaded Achilles. He's going to catch a million passes.

Got him as my RB2 in my big money league. If he hits, I'm looking good there.

Just wondering who is starting ETN in week 1 and over whom. Feel like Robinson will get a small role in this first game and ETN will get the majority of work.

Right now I have him in at flex over Edmonds, Mooney and Jeudy (PPR league) but will probably change my mind 20x by game time.
I am over dillon, stevenson, damien harris, and MGIII. PPR league.

Hmmm, I have Penny in over him atm in PPR.

Washington's D in recent memory has been much better vs run than pass (although I know he's expected to be used in the passing game) I actually have him benched in favor of Gibbs (for now)

As you should. Think of it this way - he and Najee Harris were drafted back-to-back in the 2021 NFL draft. In a dynasty or keeper you may have better options, but in a redraft, is there anyone who drafted him as bench fodder? Unlike all other positions, top RB's enter the league and produce right away. WR's are typically next, but rookie RB's flourish. And that's basically what ETN is, right?

Travis Etienne rushed four times for 47 yards in the Jaguars' Week 1 loss to the Commanders, adding two receptions for an additional 18 yards.

Etienne looked explosive with the ball in his hand with his best drive coming in the middle of the second quarter. On that drive, Etienne totaled 35 yards on two touches but dropped an easy touchdown that would've given the Jaguars their first score of the day. The second-year running back was targeted four times in the passing game, with his longest gain coming on a 12-yard play. Etienne saw eight opportunities to James Robinson's 13, working as a distant second behind the veteran back. Etienne was also over-thrown on what would have been a 15-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter, narrowly missing an otherwise solid fantasy day. His usage was encouraging, but he also lost two red zone scores to Robinson. He's probably best viewed as a high-upside RB3 next week against the Colts.

I've been the biggest James Robinson supporter since the beginning. But I have to say Etienne is the superior weapon. I'm surprised to say he's even good in pass protection.

Week 1 was JRob's day with the TDs, but I think that will prove atypical in the end. Etienne had some bonehead plays with a dropped a TD himself and then a fumble.

The biggest concern is Pederson with his want to use a committee. They split snaps this time but JRob got twice as many touches. I feel like this balances out in the future. Yet is still less than ideal. Etienne tho, should get the more productive work in the passing game, and make more happen when gets the ball.

I posted this in the buy low thread:

As someone who has ETN in all 3 of my dynasty leagues, I felt panicked Sunday. Couldn't believe Robinson was getting all the carries. Couldn't believe the efficiency. Dude looks really good.

That being said: Diving deeper, Etienne played 50% of the snaps. He had 65 yards on 6 touches. Talent wise, he's exactly who we thought he was. He had multiple near misses on touchdowns. And I know, I know, no league gives points for near touchdowns. But he's getting red zone opportunities. Not exclusively. But he was definitely playing in the red zone a good bit.

I think as the season progresses, we'll see the carries at closer to a 50/50 split and Etienne getting the bulk of the passing work.

Etienne getting the bulk of the passing work.
Afraid I don't see this, fantasy owners always want to dismiss him but James Robinson is considerably better in pass protection and while not nearly as explosive with the ball in his hands he's no slouch.

And I do own a healthy amount of ETN. Also a good amount of James Robinson but for right now I'd selfishly rather see ETN be the main fantasy producer but in general was disappointed with the overall lack of use of both of them but it's just one game. Both looked really good with their chances with the exception of ETN's drop. My expectation is that they will be a bigger part of the game plan in general moving forward. For comp's sake they touched or were targetted on 30% of of the snaps. The Browns duo was at 47.5%, the Jets duo was at 41.6% and both of those teams ran 10-15 more plays. So a higher percentage of plays with a few more plays should help.

I'm also not nearly as optimistic as an Etienne owner. It's only one week and things can change, but as mentioned above, Pederson really seems to like and trust Robinson. I expect that Etienne will be more of the change of pace guy with a decent workload, but Robinson will still get the majority of touches, including the high leverage (red zone) ones.

Other than the one bad drop I thought Etienne looked really good yesterday. Very explosive. I am worried about the usage. Robinson also looks good. I'm also concerned about the QB. I didn't watch the whole game but from what I saw, I thought Lawrence looked terrible.

Etienne could easily have had two TD's if Lawrence hadn't airmailed the ball way over his head when he was open in the end zone and if he catches the ball he dropped. The mood in here would be very different.

He also lost a good chunk of yards on the fumble that popped backwards out of bounds about 15 yards.

I'm not so sure JRob is so far superior in pass pro. Etienne didn't make any egregious blocks from what I saw. He missed a blitz pick up one time where he tried to help the tackle instead, luckily the qb, what's his name, got rid of the ball.

For what it's worth, the Jags had Ettienne in the game for the two minute offense and the end of the game and the first half.

Then you are not watching the same thing I am watching but I don't know how to debate such a thing but will simply say I'll just have to agree to heavily disagree.

That's a contradiction and I assume you are talking about this play: https://twitter.com/Nate_Tice/status/1569401181176483842 which I don't know how you can say is not an egregious miss.

That's the one I meant where he tried to block the wrong guy. You can see what he was trying to do but he tried to do the wrong thing and realized it too late.

If Nate Tice were inclined to, he could post a few other plays where Etienne blocked the right guy pretty well.

Some of you are still in denial. Fantasy football is all about opportunities. Robinson is the guy right now. Not saying ETN will not have good games. Just the staff likes Robinson so much they gave him the bulk of the work his first week back from injury. And this staff did not draft ETN.

How are you saying this when they pretty much split snaps 50/50?

To be fair, they also didn't draft Robinson. So it's more of a wait and see thing, although the staff clearly has a soft spot for Robinson.

Yes agreed
Robinson is the guy right now
No I don't agree. Now it's reasonable to think that if Robinson could make it a 50/50 timeshare week one back from injury that it could grow a little more but right now that's not the case and I personally don't foresee any of them "being the guy".

Robinson got more carries, ETN got more targets. Robinson had the big fantasy game because he scored twice, ETN had a dud because he missed two layup TD's. These things will change. I said in a post a few up I own both of them and in fact own both of them on several different teams. I have no idea what to do with them in terms of starting lineup calls right now but I will say I lean ETN right now because in a RBBC the one I trust more is usually based on anticipated receiving game usage, big play ability and goal line usage. IMO ETN is ahead on two of those things and the goal line or usage inside the 10 looks to close to call.

They split snaps 50/50.

They split red zone carries 50/50.

Etienne ran 7 red zone routes to 3 for Robinson.

Etienne got 75% of the 3rd down work.

Robinson had a better game. But I think the above numbers tell a promising story for ETN moving forward. I definitely don’t think he’s just a COP back based on the above.

I watched the entire game and I thought ETN showed a lot of explosion and upside. Yes, he had a bad drop and made some mistakes, but he is basically a rookie. I think he's a great hold or buy low IF anyone is selling. I also think this is going to look like Denver's backfield last year.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports Travis Etienne and James Robinson will continue to split carries.

He noted that the team wants to place more emphasis on the run, pointing to their second-half success on the ground in Week 1. Because they were trailing, the Jags still passed far more often than they ran the ball in the second half, though their ground game was efficient. The team ran 11 times for 73 yards in the final two quarters. Etienne was incredibly explosive in his debut, but the Jaguars trust Robinson to get what is blocked. He is also strong in pass protection. A committee will be frustrating, but both backs are viable FLEX plays for Week 2.
