RB Travis Etienne, JAX (1 Viewer)

It is being reported that the coaches are concerned.   But who knows.
Yeah I get that, they might be. They might not. Sometimes reports turn out to be significant and sometimes they end up being nothing. I will say I want you spreading that info everywhere you can to help keep this ADP down.

A) This isn't the SEC

B)  the risk is if he lines up as a blocking back....Kirk doesn't line up as a blocking back so bizarre comparison to WRs by you
He doesn’t - that’s my point. It wasn’t a direct comparison. I was making the point that you seemed to exactly miss.

So you are contending that Etienne will line up at WR on all or most third downs?

I suppose it's possible, but can't think of an instance in the history of the NFL where this has happened.  Some third downs, of course.

No, I’m making the point that he’ll either be a receiver or lined up at receiver out of the backfield.

which is exactly what I said before when I said they’d be more likely to get a TE or a different RB to block in those scenarios, which IMO is MUCH more likely than ETN “coming off the field on 3rd downs”, a notion I find preposterous.

"Preposterous", eh.  I guess we'll have to wait until the regular season to find out.
Ah, you found your words.

Yes - preposterous they’d take their receiving back, and one of their best receivers off the field in an obvious passing down.

And, preposterously, you stated that they would do so in favor of a RB who’s likely to start the season on the IR. So it does seem like a fairly preposterous claim.  Unless you think Robinson will come off the IR on 3rd downs?

Good luck to you too, “buddy”.

So do we think Snoop Conner will be the primary backup to start the season?

I haven't heard anything definitive, but it sounds like beatwriters see him as the frontrunner for early season work while Robinson is on the mend.

Of course beatwriters have a habit of botching their forecasts, so we really don't know at this point.

He was a 5th round pick so he will have to prove he's better than the other options in camp. I don't think we can make any assumptions about who plays behind ETN if Robinson is not available.

“Jaguar Report's John Shipley believes Travis Etienne has bee "the star of Jaguars training camp" so far.

After losing his rookie campaign to a foot fracture, Etienne is in need of a big 2022. The former first-round draft pick has reportedly been turning heads during the first week of camp, which included a big play on Saturday. Shipley said of Etienne, "If he gets a sliver of space, he has been able to use it to explode into the teeth of the defense. He has been as advertised so far, at least on the ground." Shipley added that Etienne has lined up in a number of places offensively and "has gotten the ball in a variety of ways". This is encouraging news for Etienne truthers who saw his stock take a slight hit after it was announced James Robinson (Achilles) would be returning in mid-August. A legitimate threat both on the ground and through the air, Etienne's upside is certainly capped with Robinson's return. A potential top-12 PPR back sans Robinson, Etienne is more of a mid to low-end RB2 with Robinson active.”

Not a word about his pass protection. Weird. Encouraging update though.

While it’s great to hear that he looks explosive, it’s good to remember that in camp when there isn’t hitting, pads aren’t on, etc, that RBs and smaller speedy WRs tend to look extra impressive because defenders can’t be nearly as aggressive defending them. Let’s see what he does in some preseason action before getting too many hopes up.

No doubt. Always good to keep that perspective in mind. That said, due to the nature of his injury, the fact that he is explosive, & has been described as the fastest player on the field in more than one update is certainly cause to get excited about him.

My concern is, how does he look tomorrow. How does he come out and play and practice and then how does he look the next day. And the next day, and the next day. Due to the nature of is specific injury, one bad day can be devastating.

so as long as I continue to see positive updates, I’m going to continue to be excited about him

Training Camp Buzz: Trevor Lawrence says Travis Etienne is 'in better shape' than ever after injury

Excerpt:

Trevor Lawrence high on Travis Etienne

Jaguars teammates Trevor Lawrence and Travis Etienne have been on the same sideline for half a decade, but the quarterback has never seen his backfield mate quite like this. "I honestly think he looks like he's in better shape than I thought he was in our last year at Clemson," Lawrence said Saturday of the second-year RB. That's saying something, considering Etienne accounted for 6,107 total yards and 78 touchdowns in his four years at Clemson and both Lawrence and Etienne were first-round picks of the Jaguars in 2021. Unfortunately, the star RB didn't play a single down in his rookie year after suffering a serious foot injury in the preseason. But with an entire campaign to sit and get his body right, Etienne has emerged even better than before, at least according to his longtime quarterback. "Obviously, he was great, played great, all that, he was fine," Lawrence said of Etienne before his setback. "But right now, his body looks great, I think he's running real well, picking up the offense, done a great job in the protections. All those things that we're asking him to do, he's done a great job."

As a guy who had 2 shares last year and was able to trade him in one league (1st and 2nd rookie pick this year) and another league where I couldn't even get a 1st for him, so I kept him - I will say I'm happy on both fronts, but am VERY excited to see what he does this year. I feel the 3rd down talk/pass blocking stuff is just fodder for now. He WILL get his touches and in PPR will help a lot of teams win titles this year as a solid RB2 with high upside weekly. IMO.

What's the status of James Robinson? I know he avoided the PUP but he didn't play on either preseason game. Any camp reports of note?

FBG consensus projections have him around 170 touches this season and Etienne at 220.

Latest update is he's taking reps with the first team against no defense. Lots of talk of him doing sprints/running on Twitter. Doesn't look like anything with contact.

If you're looking at the FBG projections, I like Tremblay's. I think he's heavily involved in the passing game. 175-180 rushing attempts and 60 something receptions seems strongly in the range of outcomes.

ESPN's Michael DiRocco believes Travis Etienne will lead the Jaguars backfield out of the gate regardless of James Robinson's status.

The Jaguars are expected to bring Robinson along slowly. DiRocco also says that even if Robinson is cleared to play in the opener, Etienne will lead the way early on in the season. As the season moves on, however, DiRocco expects Robinson to get more of his normal workload. DiRocco believes that while Etienne has been an effective runner in between the tackles, the Jags want to use him on pass routes out of the backfield and also line him up out wide. As the season goes on and Robinson gets better, expect the Jags to use both backs in different ways.

ESPN's Michael DiRocco writes that Travis Etienne will "be heavily featured in the offense" even after James Robinson (Achilles) returns to a full workload.

What that actually means is open to some debate, but it sounds like Etienne will continue to draw at least a 50-50 share of the workload. The most rational thing might be for Robinson to get work between the tackles and in goal-line situations while Etienne works third downs, two-minute drill, and selected other downs. It's a good sign for Etienne's long-term stock that this kind of noise is coming out.

Just wondering who is starting ETN in week 1 and over whom. Feel like Robinson will get a small role in this first game and ETN will get the majority of work.

Right now I have him in at flex over Edmonds, Mooney and Jeudy (PPR league) but will probably change my mind 20x by game time.

2 things I would point to

-A couple posts up it says "heavily involved in the offense" and that was 10+ days ago? Things could change but...

-It appears the only thing threatening him is James Robinson returning from an achilles tear/injury, seems like Akers is having difficulty restarting his NFL career and JRob could be facing similar. That makes ETN even coming off season ending injury last year, it's not the achilles and rumors are he looked terrific in camp and will be used a lot by the head coach.

-I'm a believe it when I see it type and I think it's OK to watch him for a week but Washington is not a bad match up and since he was drafted at the RB2 level according to his ADP, seems likely many will play him.
