RB Trey Sermon, IND (2 Viewers)

Of course that was a hope, but it wasn't an assumption when I drafted Sermon. I just don't understand someone drafting (probably reaching for) Sermon when Mostert was an obstacle, then dropping him 3 days after a concussion with still TBD timetable... 2.5 weeks into the season. Just seems like someone with that mindset (e.g. short bench) would not have him on their roster to begin with.

Most people who drafted Sermon did so based upon incorrect information (that he was a starter or close to it in basically a RBBC), not that he was third or fourth on the depth chart and wouldn't even see any action even after Mostert went down.  Mitchell and Hasty are still ahead of him when healthy, and who knows who else will be too (Wilson when available and/or anyone else they are signing now)

Where he stands now is anyone's guess, I certainly can't blame anyone for dropping him (in redraft) for a player who is actually playing.

So I just read on PFT that Hasty is going to IR & the Niners signed Chris Thompson (yes, that one) to the practice squad.

ETA: And the thrust of the blurb is Shanahan isn't ruling out bringing in Frank Gore.

As much as I want Sermon to take this and run with it, I'm afraid there are way too many mouths to feed in SF RIGHT NOW and they haven't even gotten the ball to Kittle or Aiyuk yet. This running game is going to work, but it could end up being a 3-4 headed RBBC monster that won't net you a startable player. I think I'm talking myself into dropping him.....but maybe not yet as I don't see anyone on the FA wire that I love more than I love the idea of Sermon swooping in and taking over this backfield after his EPIC 3 time RING OF HIS DING play for a concussion on Sunday. Elbow---Helmet to helmet---then lands with all his weight on his head to finish it off. His helmet earned it's stripes.

I don't understand the bolded at all... this backfield is an empty bloody minefield. The concussion sucks but the path couldn't be clearer to huge opportunity here.

I can't imagine a wire that has a better upside option than Sermon.

Totally agree on that helmet... it did enough to save 3 peoples lives.

Sermon limited practice today, Shanny thinks he has a chance to play. With Mitchell’s shoulder injury being slightly worse than anticipated, the door may be cracking open again for Sermon.

I need some explanation of why he is so much different than every other RB they try and start in San Fran...and some of you feel this is a league winning move to have him on your roster.

I suppose it depends on your league. If you don't have many bench spots, there's probably someone on the waiver wire you could start instantly and drop Sermon for them. On the other hand, if you have deep benches, it seems like there aren't many free agents that represent the potential gold mine you could have if Sermon steps up.

Sorry, that was confusing and I was "thinking out loud" as I do :)

Right now, Sermon could very well get going if he can play. Now if Hasty goes to IR with Mostert that would leave Trey battling with Mitchel (once healthy) as the primary ball carriers. It's probably a bit of the same as the Baltimore situation. IF you can get the lead guy, and IF Kyle feeds him, you get a productive guy. If Sermon can block AND catch out of the backfield he could really be an asset in the short pass/dink-n-dunk/screen game O.

I'm holding for sure.

Anyone have an Athletic subscription?  I cant access the link but I like the tweet at least.

Story makes it sound like Trey Sermon could be the favorite to start in #49ers backfield against #Packers.

• Trey Sermon could be going from being a healthy scratch in Week 1 to starting in Week 3. The rookie running back was limited in Wednesday’s practice as he makes his way through the league’s concussion protocol, but Shanahan said Sermon is “on a good path” to play Sunday.

Meanwhile, Elijah Mitchell missed practice with a shoulder issue that Shanahan said was “a little more” than the stinger the team hoped he had suffered Sunday while JaMycal hasty already has been ruled out against the Packers with a high-ankle sprain. Shanahan said Mitchell has a chance to play against the Packers.

The only fully healthy runners on the 53-man roster are Trenton Cannon, who was added last week, and Jacques Patrick, whom the 49ers signed Tuesday.

Well, if Sermon doesn't have a concussion, he's healthy and easily the most skilled guy in that backfield.

FWIW I thought C Thompson looked lost and terrible last year in Jax in the few games I got to see them/him. James Robinson dominated snap% last year but when CT came in it was night and day how bad he was. IMHO. That said, if he gets on the active roster and....oh nevermind.

Am I really thinking about putting Sermon in this weekend? It is the Sunday night game and in many instances I have Mitchell and Sermon both so as to not have to worry about it. But in leagues where I have just one....oy.

Complicated situation but yes if they declare mitchell out and sermon healthy that would be best for my team and for Sermon

The Pack can be run on

Barring a shocking announcement before Sunday by SF about Mitchell or Sermon definitely being ready to roll I don't think either will be in many starting lineups

Sunday night really complicates things if either/both Mitchell & Sermon are GTDs. There is no way Shanahan announces it before early or late game kickoffs when most waivers lock on the players involved.

So Sermon/Mitchell owners either need to make a very uninformed decision to start/sit or have another sub on GB, SF, Phi or Dal to swap.

I think SF practice reports will rise to the top of the New York Times bestseller list this week.

GB defense looks like a slow moving train wreck.  If this guy can shake the cob webs out he's got a real chance to showcase himself this weekend.

I don't really understand how he looked like the heir apparent up until the week 1 scratch, assuming it's not lack of talent.  Coaches sometimes just dislike a guy for reasons that never get fully explained, but in the end if the dude ends up producing, it will all be forgotten.  He's got an opportunity here to put the rough start aside, but if the head injury is lingering...it would just be another bad break for this kid.  Chances don't come up over and over again.  Players need to seize it when they do.

I just hope for any clarity at all by Saturday.

GTDs suck.

Depends on the game. If it's in the 1pm EST slot I couldn't care less if I had someone with a GTD. You're right it sucks for anyone with a piece of the Niners backfield this week though

:goodposting:

I have both Mitchell and Sermon, and will likely be going with a different option (Swift or T.Williams). First week after concussion always worries me. I think I'd read that odds of a repeat concussion decrease as time passes, and RB is a pretty violent position with hard contact expected on every carry. I'll want to see a full game played before trusting it.

My wife and son have had concussions in the past. I know NFL players seem to shake them off but no one in my family that had one shook them off in a matter of a week. At least 2 weeks for all symptoms to subside, more like 3 or more. Maybe we just have sensitive brains :).

I drafted Sermon and I'm kinda cranky about the whole Shannahan bs (team's 2-0 so what do we know). Yesterday I was feeling antsy to see him get on the field this week and get 16 touches and make me feel better about my third RB...

Today, I'm actually wishing/hoping that they don't play him this week and that he can be allowed to more fully recover before going back out there. He wasn't unconscious from what I saw but if he's still having headaches and dizzyness, pressure to perform should be put on the back burner. I'd rather get him back week 4-5 and have him take the job in full health than be rushed out there and end up doing any long term harm.

Hilarious...and I'm guessing you wear neither curved goat horns NOR NFL football helmets around. Please confirm.
Lol, no.

Green mountain (my state's nickname) + mountain goat (avid hiker, formerly) = nickname for myself. Head butting my family tho, I can see how that looks with the name. Too funny.

My now 21 year old son played hockey and rugby, one from each. Rugby concussion caused a week plus of missed school and sitting in a dark room. Wife stood up into the edge of the linen cabinet upper door. Experienced dizzyness for a month.

Apologies on the side track to those looking for Sermon updates.

Got in another limited practice today per Rotoworld (or whatever they are calling themselves these days). So tracking in the right direction.

Trey Sermon (concussion) practiced again on Thursday in a no-contact jersey.

Kyle Shanahan proclaimed Sermon on the right path to playing on Thursday and Elijah Mitchell's practice status would seem to indicate that Sermon has a chance of being a big part of the backfield action in Week 3. This is not exactly how you probably drew up Sermon szn being created in rose-colored offseason glasses, we're sure, but Week 3's game against the Packers could be a chance for Sermon to leave a good impression. If Mitchell doesn't play, Sermon would be a FLEX play with some upside.

There's a non-zero chance Trey Sermon gave the best rookie in-season buy window possible and now turns into this year's answer to the Justin Jefferson rookie fantasy breakout.

But so is 100 so, where do I sign?  :drive:

People who are counting him out and season over are 100% invested in another sf rb. He has a clear shot to production this season.

Good lord.

Guy is saying that, similar to Justin Jefferson, a touted rookie has had a horrid start to the season that could be the only window to buy him before he might explode and become untouchable.

I got it, but the buzzwords "non-zero chance" need to DIAF.
