Enders Game. Not great but solid enough if you consider it based on the book and not the true story of the book. Just too much good stuff in the book to get into a movie. B-ish I think.

Oblivion.

I think I really liked this movie. I hated the cliche ending but the epilogue was nice. I have to think on it a little bit but it wasn't what I was expecting at all.

I liked Oblivion. The FX were great, Tom Cruise is just made for that kind of role, and there was actually a nice story there.

A shoutout to those in this thread that recommended Cube. I saw it mentioned a bunch of times so it kept rising up my Queue. Finally got it this week. Wow, was that ####in' horrible. I hope I misunderstood and didn't get that people liked it because it's a good movie to goof on. So bad.

SMH...

Finally got around to watching Man of Steel, well, the first half at least. Move is awful, Amy Adams is awful, not sure I'll watch the rest.

Edge of Tomorrow

Very entertaining. The movie is structured much like a video game wherein if you fail, you have to keep replaying the level over and over again. The effects are wonderful in this movie, but the star could be the editing. Every time Cruise's character reboots, the movie is edited such that it never feels repetitive.

Recommended for sci-fi / action fans.
Maybe it's Tom Cruise fatigue with Oblivion and Jack Reacher streaming in a lot of places. Oblivion was decent and Reacher was terrible IMO. Nobody turned out for this one. As the commentary has said you have an action flick that is not a super hero movie nor a sequel yet can't find an audience. Disappointing. Edge of Tomorrow is very satisfying.

Edge of Tomorrow a generic title. Should have went with Live. Die. Repeat.
I love that title. Nice observation.

This movie was really fun, and I hope people go see it.

Even though Steven Van Zandt isn't all that great, I am really enjoying Lilyhammer.

The supporting cast makes the show worth a watch.

The Fisher King

How didnt Jeff Bridges win an Oscar for his role? Solid flick.
Winning an Oscar is very complicated, wazoo. You know a lot of ins, a lot of outs, a lot of what-have-yous.

This Is The End

Terrible.

A bunch of obnoxious guys screaming at each other is not entertaining, even with good special effects.

Seth Rogen needs to just go away.

Watched Ender's Game again just because. Purposely told myself to just forget the book and enjoy it for what it is - which was easier without my son sitting there going, that's wrong, they missed that what just happened.

Anyway... my review is this. It's a really good movie. Probably better than it was treated. And here is why - the main actors except for Harrison Ford being all angry white guy in the military are all mostly kids. And they did well. They weren't asked to do much, but they did it and did it well. It could have come off as a Disney channel type of movie with their acting and it didn't. The effects were solid. They did about as good as you could do with the battle room (man I wish they did more there - see, I can't completely get the book out of my head) and the graphics of Ender dealing with the main battle chamber were fantastic. Felt real enough.

But my favorite part was the end. They nailed the end. Perfectly actually. Not the battle end, but the Speaker for the Dead end. I commend hollywood for not just killing a book completely and actually allowing some of the soul of the book to be seen in the movie.

I wish I saw it in the theater.

The World's End was seriously funny as hell. There is a large group of people here who love this movie, right? There has to be. For a second it's so outlandishly stupid but the recovery is fricken brilliant. And really, Simon Pegg was hysterical. Seriously. In fact, I am going to buy this movie to have it as a possible DVD option in the game room. That good. I hate buying movies.

Saw it in the theater. Loved it.

The first hour was the funniest of the year.

Promethius

Not sure what to think. Not what I was expecting at all. The heroin was a bit much but to be fair, John McClaine gets tortured more and still does amazing stuff and I usually like (except when he is in Russia). Charlize wasn't in it enough and her character seemed like a waste at the end of the day. The underlying mimicking of the god-Promethius story was pretty obvious. The ending was meh.

Low B / high C? Maybe slightly higher?

The World's End was awesome. Maybe my favorite flick of the year. Rare combination of hilarious comedy and actual character development that you cared about. The serious dramatic moments were actually dramatic, except the ones they interrupted with comedy which was always perfectly timed. And I say this as someone that thought Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz were overrated.

This is the End was fine. Not nearly as good as The World's End but still damn funny overall. "Hermione just stole all our ####". :lmao:

Boys of Abu Ghraib

Saw this on Netflix. Thought it was very good. Had never heard of it before. Glad I watched it.

3.5/5

Odd Thomas

I have never read the Odd Thomas books, but I may pick them up after this movie. I liked it. It entertained me. I liked the lead, much more likeable guy without the fake Russian accent. His love interest gave me the happypants. The story was a bit of a mess but the characters were so likeable that I gave some minor problems a pass.

Argo

This was nominated for best picture? I have to admit. .. This was closer to sucked for me than best picture. C at best. And that is generous.

I really don't see it at all.

I really liked the end as well but I thought everything up to that was pretty meh. Battle School was way rushed, which I guess they had to do for time (would have worked better as a TV series). My other big complaint was that everything was just too clean and digital while Ender's Game always felt more gritty to me. It kind of reminded me of the new Star Wars movies in that respect.

Yeah, thinking on this in the car on the way in. Given how they changed the true story (that granted I didn't fully know until the uproar on how they did it for this movie) the cast that should have been outstanding (and I will say it now - John Goodman is a great actor) and a story that would have been fairly entertaining just given the nature of the thing, you'd think they would make a better movie. It had no fire to it. If it was going to be this dull, it should have instead been 100% true and instead of focusing on the act of getting out, focus on the internal machinations of the intelligence apparatus during the hostage crisis and how it all worked. Sounds more boring but frankly would have been just as entertaining.

And I'm not an Affleck hater. At all. I think he takes too much grief. But this..... the award nomination is a joke. Someone owed someone something on that or got a reach around they weren't expecting or something. This is a totally forgettable movie save for the fact that you remember something so bad got a best picture nod.

I still don't understand why Argo seems to get so much grief for historical accuracy when so many other films don't.

Enough Said

Both Gandofini and Julia Louis-Dreyfus kill it in this movie. Excellent.
I thought it was entertaining/charming enough but I wonder if I was being a little forgiving because I knew it was Gandolfini's last role.
I always thought that Gandolfini had a natural ability that improved every film he appeared in. I urge you all to see Cinema Verite. Gandolfini kills that role.
