After watching "September 5" recently, I had the itch to go back and watch "Munich". I have not seen it since I saw it in the theater. It was worth the rental.
I certainly got my money's worth since it was 2hr 45 min in length.
Excellent story, a bit too long, and disjointed here and there and a little hard to follow, but that was more a me problem.
If you happen to watch September 5 and have an interest in the story, I highly recommend pairing it with Munich.

"Munich" follows the Israel special forces team assigned to hunt down and eliminate the terrorists that carried out the murder of Israeli athletes killed at the 72 Olympics. I thought it was good enough to recommend. Although it was made 20 years ago, it still holds up like it were made today.

Watched The Brutalist, now streaming on MAX. That was great. Acting, script, and cinematography were all top notch. I can see why it has won as many accolades as it has.

With the 3-1/2 hour length, it did take me a few goes at it to finish it (mostly because it has nudity/sex and the only time I get to watch anything like is that limited time between 10-11 at night when I’m still awake and my kid is in bed), but the time did fly by otherwise.

Went with my oldest daughter to see the most recent Final Destination. I loved it.
I'm currently binging all the Final Destinations as I've never seen any but the first one before. I'm on 5 which is the suspension bridge collapse one and it so far has the best production value. Overall not a fan of the series but I am interested in the new one so I'm pot committed at this point.

Nic Cage makes some odd choices but that's one reason I like him. A bunch of his recent movies have been weird or different but good none the less. Fingers crossed for The Surfer.

I enjoyed Accountant 2.... Lacked something from the first one but still decent
After all the hype from last week, I fired up The Accountant 2 and enjoyed the hell out of it. Thought it was better than the first one, funnier, seemed to flow better and I think Affleck was born for this role because I'm not sure if it's much of a stretch for him. Loved the back & forth with Bernthal throughout. The FBI woman was the big downer for me, she just didn't seem to fit in this one. I went back and watched The Accountant to refresh the backstory after. I enjoyed both, at least it's a new premise or was, forgot how old the original was (2016).

Also finished a rewatch of The Pacific after listening to a podcast about new book about Eugene Sledge by his son. Just as horrific as I remember. This lead me to rewatch Letters From Iwo Jima. Another great movie with a different premise, telling the story from the losers perspective. Yes there were a few from the German view but I don't recall a bunch about Japan.
I watched the Accountant 2 as well.

I thought it was pretty bad. Writing made not much sense plotwise, and I didn't like how goofball he and his brother became.
I thought the first one was not great. Is this better or worse than the original?
I completely enjoyed the 1st.

I thought this was bad. Ok if you're stuck on a plane, or desperate.

I pivoted off a brand new movie to Lars and the Real Girl. (Prime) for last night's movie. A movie with that plot has no business being that good, sweet, and heartwarming. I saw it once back in the day, but I have been hesitant to do a rewatch thinking it might not hold up. I might have liked it even more this time around.

Just watched HBO Max, The Alto Knights. I'll start by saying I'll generally always watch this genre. Overall it was meh. Absolutely hate that they had Dinero play two roles. Hate it. Almost turned it off for that. Why do movies do that? Only example of that ever kinda working for me was Hardy in Legend. Thought twin brothers at least had some logic behind it. Might be other examples of it working, but this one isn't one fo them. It's worth a one time watch for me then forgotten.

That sounds so bad but reviews do look good and I’ll take your word on this and try it out.

Predator: Killer of Killers (Hulu): 7.7 IMDB, animated movie. This is split into 4 sections, with each of the first three feeding the 4th. 7.7 is too high, I expect that will drop over time. I just don’t think Predator holds up as an overall concept to be mined. It seems set up more as a video game or comic book than a series of movies - for some reason I find Aliens movies to be disappointments when they don’t live up to the background, but with Predator movies if they’re decent I think they did the best that could be dine with weak background.

Anyway, this was good enough. The animation looked great, the mini-stories felt rich despite limited time and dialogue, and the predators looked distinctive. It’s worth watching.

It's pg-13, so you know the movie doesn't go there. I was also surprised to see so many good reviews from the audience on imdb and RT. Seems like 7.0/10+ average on all the sites.

That movie looks so god awful. I think I heard on a podcast Barry Levinson is old friends with Zaslav who runs Warner Bros so his buddy gave him the $50 million to make this. Just lighting money on fire, he’s so incompetent and absolutely not worth the $50 million a year he makes. Not sure which one is a bigger waste of money, Alto Knights or his salary.

What's weird is how movies are promoted today compared to 30 years ago. 30 years ago I would have heard of this right before it hit the theatres. Nowadays movies just randomly drop on stream platforms. I'd never even heard of this move just stumbled on it searching Prime. How in the world did I miss this. I thought wow, Dinero and the mob. Out of respect for those two things I watched. It was basically time filler. Not a good thing. Ha ha

Yeah I think there’s a very clear reason they spent no money promoting it.

Mike Meyers in Austin Powers, So I married an Axe Murder

Peter Sellers in Dr Strangelove.

but yeah... agreed- for the most part, not usually successful.

When everyone skips commercials, promotion is difficult lol

Seems I never hear of anything anymore unless it pierces the ad-free bubble in other ways.

Alec Guinness in Kind Hearts and Coronets and Eddie Murphy in The Nutty Professor played multiple family members

I was thinking of some summer/coming of age type movies and instead of starting Stand By Me, The Great Outdoors, or the Way Way Back yet again, I heard @BLOCKED_PUNT 's voice asking me why I don't look for something newer to me. That led me down a rabbit hole and adding to the queue: The To Do List (kanopy), My Old ***, Mud, The Skeleton Twins, Young Adult, and The Peanut Butter Falcon. 4 I haven't seen before, and a couple only once.

First I watched The To Do List (2013), and wow is that movie funny but raunchy. I chose it for Aubrey Plaza, and I had forgotten that Bill Hader was in it, so double bonus. Written and directed by Maggie Carey, it is very much in the vein of Superbad and others and maybe even more explicit and rauchy. OR, I will admit it might feel that way since it's from the pov of HS girls. I laughed and cringed a lot. I love Plaza's dry deadpan delivery and since I like uncomfortable comedy, this was a perfect vehicle for that. I recently watched a bit of Booksmart, and that is a decent comparison but this one is even more explicit. I think tonight I will go with My Old *** or Skeleton Twins to go with the Hader/Plaza theme.

You movie buffs should put a summer/coming of age type movie list together for dads like me who are always on the hunt for movies to watch with my kids. My twins are almost 10 and soon enough, won't want anything to do with me (I have older sons so I know) so I'd love to have a list at the ready for them.

As mentioned in Tim's thread, we watched Stand By Me on Friday. That's as close to the perfect coming of age/summer fun movie as it gets. I loved it when I watched in in the 80s, showed my older boys 10 years ago and they loved it and so did my twin boys on Fri. Just perfect.

We've got JAWS on deck. Can't wait.

We seem to go younger and animated with the 10 year old, so i might not be much help.

Some universally loved movies at our house are Kicking and Screaming, Here Comes the Boom, School of Rock, The Muppets, etc. A lot of animated movies too.

I think it’s because the streaming market is oversaturated and these companies are just looking for content regardless of quality

when they are high school junior's you'll have to watch porky's with them so they know what to expect senior year followed by revenge of the nerds the following year to get them ready for college. hth....

I’d go with American Pie and Superbad over Porkys. Porkys kinda sucked, probably should have been on my overrated list but that’s how little I think of it

They'll never want to watch movies again if you show them this.

I know it took a while for me to recover.

Edit: Oh, I see there's an extended version with 50 minutes of additional footage. Which, of course, means that there are actually TEN circles of hell.

Never heard of Tree of Life but read the Wikipedia page....looks interesting but might be a bit much for 9 year olds. Great cast.

My wife owns the movie My Girl but thinks it'll scar the boys. It's a fantastic film.

Can't wait to see how Jaws goes!
