I watched "Sling Blade" yesterday. I'm not obsessed with the movie, but I've seen it three times now which is one time more than most films I watch that I like.
Each time I see it I think the same thing.....If I hadn't known that was Billy Bob Thornton, I never would have guessed it was him.
The repetition of his mannerisms and "ticks" are annoying and a bit distracting, but man he sure is consistent.

Tru dat. I had got talked into my 1st date as a widower, summer of '96, me and my best pal takin 2 Reno cocktail waitress down to Sacto for a Yoakam concert, which is kinda the opposite of the music i like. He worked that crowd like a cross between Elvis and Prince and there weren't a dry seat in the house.
Then, to see him right after that as the picture of smalltime domestic malevolence in SlingBlade. I was hugely impressed. That's one talented mammajamma, thought I. Then, poof......is he relevant in any way now?

I'm bummed out that Yokam didn't get more roles after Sling Blade. He has an innate on-screen charisma that many established actors still can't pull off.

When they're available for rent, I have one movie to recommend and one to avoid.
Recommend: "Don't Breathe", the home-invasion gone wrong movie was really tense and every scare was earned. No cats knocking over a lamp or anything like that. Someone told me to cover my eyes at the beginning of the movie and uncover them when I heard the first word of dialogue. I guess there's some kind of major spoiler at the beginning, one of those "here's how it ends...let's see how it started..." kind of things, so I took the advice (and would advise you to do the same).
Avoid: "Morgan". An artificial intelligence in human form attacks a doctor, and the company responsible for the AI investigates it's product to determine its viability moving forward. It's a great idea, but executed very badly. There's your ordinary problems like poor acting and editing, but there's a howlingly ridiculous twist so telegraphed it would make Shyamalan blush. Your time is valuable, don't waste it on this.

Conjuring 2 bored me. Maybe it is because I believe the Warrens to be oportunistic frauds, so making them the sympathetic heroes leaves me with a huge disconnect. Or it could be that the movie is based on a well documented hoax. Or it could be the awkward placement of the next spin-off character in the Crooked Man.

Gotta say, I was pleasantly surprised by Look Who's Back. I laughed from start to almost finish. Didn't really care for the ending but it could have gone many ways. Funny on so many levels. I loved the Borat style real life interactions. My parents were both from Germany but thankfully were very Americanized but this would definitely hit a little close to home for some family and friends. Not sure if they would laugh as much as I did. Or maybe they'd laugh more! Really well done. 4/5

The Magnificent Seven - 7/10
Eh. It was better when it was the Seven Samurai. Lots of star power, but each was a bit diluted.
I was surprised at the amount of humor, which I did find funny. But the shootouts weren't great.

Finally got around to watching the Revenant. Fantastic visuals. Great acting. Paint by numbers, generic plot. Very little drama or intrigue.

Saw a couple this weekend
Elvis and Nixon - This was much funnier than I thought it would be. Spacey gave one of his top notch impressions and the whole story made for a completely entertaining film.
Hail Caesar - The Coen Brothers are have been hit and miss lately and this was a pretty weak one. Many scenes went on way toooooo loooooong and the whole thing was pretty boring, despite the good cast.

over on Amazon, there's an Australian tv show called The Kettering Incident. fans of x-files, wtf is going on types of things set in stunning location (tazmania) should check it out. definitely worth the watch, even if a lot of what's happened so far are locals who clearly know more than they're letting on dropping crazy hints to the lead, who then just walks away instead of saying "wtf?!- wait a sec... explain that more please".

The Imitation Game - This movie is on all the time on HBO or Showtime or something. And I end up watching at least part of it every time. Its so great. Terrific movie. Plus, of course, Keira Knightley (an indisputable 10 on any scale).

Had been looking for a movie that captured well the workings of a hyperintelligent mind since Thomas Hulce ruined Amadeus - an otherwise PERFECT film, Tim Curry was brilliant in the play - and Imitation Game coming out at the same time as the pathetic Theory of Everything made it just that much more transcendent.

Yea it was much, much better than The Theory of Everything.
One of the many things that struck me when watching it the first time was - not that long ago - people were sent to prison for being gay. Crazy.

British television/cinema has made the Turing story several times, because it's probably considered the UK's most compelling 20th C story - combining three of their favorite things, Bletchley Park, buggery and elegant ###holery - but they've all been awful. Took a Cumberbatch to get that cluster#### right.

The Big Short - another Michael Lewis undervaluation classic. If you have a massive undervaluation, he'll pick up on it, and it'll be great in movie form. Loved Carrell in this movie, not so much Bale. I have no idea how he wound up as the "serious" actor when Carrell carried it. Gosling's bit role was awesome, too.

What are you talking about? The Jungle Book? That kid was a terrible actor, looked like a green screen with 1 live actor. I've had more fun watching a David Attenborough Nature documentary, at least the animals are real.mr fancypants said:

OK MOP you want to talk films. Since I have to spell it out for you. Jungle book was a beautifully crafted movie based on an animated film some 50 years ago.Your saying the kid was an awful actor. Guess what he was playing a kid. This didn't call for a Daniel Day Louis type performance. This is a just a movie you lose yourself in for 2 hrs. I liked Keanu as well although I can understand how others might not. I thought it was a whimsical comedy that just kind of passed the time. I'm not a Melissa McCarthy fan at all but I thought Spy was hilarious,especially Jason Stratham who played a bumbling macho spy.. It seems to me you go into these movies with a preconceived notion on how they should be to your standards vs. what they are actually trying to accomplish. I think the RT ratings support what I'm saying. Maybe if you could learn to relax and use your imagination you might find yourself enjoying these type of films.IMHO
