The hidden gem in this movie was Dwight Yokam. Great performance.I watched "Sling Blade" yesterday. I'm not obsessed with the movie, but I've seen it three times now which is one time more than most films I watch that I like.
Each time I see it I think the same thing.....If I hadn't known that was Billy Bob Thornton, I never would have guessed it was him.
The repetition of his mannerisms and "ticks" are annoying and a bit distracting, but man he sure is consistent.
Tru dat. I had got talked into my 1st date as a widower, summer of '96, me and my best pal takin 2 Reno cocktail waitress down to Sacto for a Yoakam concert, which is kinda the opposite of the music i like. He worked that crowd like a cross between Elvis and Prince and there weren't a dry seat in the house. The hidden gem in this movie was Dwight Yokam. Great performance.
I'm bummed out that Yokam didn't get more roles after Sling Blade. He has an innate on-screen charisma that many established actors still can't pull off.Tru dat. Then, to see him right after that as the picture of smalltime domestic malevolence in SlingBlade. I was hugely impressed. That's one talented mammajamma, thought I. Then, poof......is he relevant in any way now?
What? He was awesome as Doc Miles in "Crank" (2006)I'm bummed out that Yokam didn't get more roles after Sling Blade. He has an innate on-screen charisma that many established actors still can't pull off.
Yoakum is awesome at everything he does. His music rocks that ####. And who can forget his brilliance in Wedding Crashers?I'm bummed out that Yokam didn't get more roles after Sling Blade. He has an innate on-screen charisma that many established actors still can't pull off.
I liked this movie too. His final lines are great.Jodoworsky's Dune
Documentary about an avant garde director who tried to make Frank Herbert's Dune in the 70s. This guy Jodoworsky is a nut, he made this movie called El Topo which is like Robert Rodriguez's El Mariachi if he was on acid. Dune was an ambitious effort - he had Giger doing the art, Orson Welles and Salvador Dali agreed to be in it apparently. Some say it went beyond what Lucas ever tried to do in terms of effects as well.
Great doc, I'll probably watch it a few more times. It has a 98% on Rotten Tomatoes which is how I found it
5/5
Critics Consensus: Part thoughtful tribute, part bittersweet reminder of a missed opportunity, Jodorowsky's Dune offers a fascinating look at a lost sci-fi legend.
Easily the best movie I've seen this year.Hell or High Water.
Finally a great movie. Been a while. Kind of a poor man's No Country for Old Men.
This one will probably end up on many top 10 lists. Ben Foster could get a Oscar nom. Bridges solid as always.
8/10
The trailer for this looked great. Hope it holds up.Hell or High Water.

This really was well done. Totally agree.Gotta say, I was pleasantly surprised by Look Who's Back. I laughed from start to almost finish. Didn't really care for the ending but it could have gone many ways. Funny on so many levels. I loved the Borat style real life interactions. My parents were both from Germany but thankfully were very Americanized but this would definitely hit a little close to home for some family and friends. Not sure if they would laugh as much as I did. Or maybe they'd laugh more! Really well done. 4/5
The new one with Denzel??!!The Magnificent Seven - 7/10
Eh. It was better when it was the Seven Samurai. Lots of star power, but each was a bit diluted.
I was surprised at the amount of humor, which I did find funny. But the shootouts weren't great.
No, the one with Yul, Steve, etc...The new one with Denzel??!!
I liked them both, soKeanu stunk, one of the worst...70% on RT?
Jungle Book was simply alright, I lose interest in it.
The Imitation Game - This movie is on all the time on HBO or Showtime or something. And I end up watching at least part of it every time. Its so great. Terrific movie. Plus, of course, Keira Knightley (an indisputable 10 on any scale).

Had been looking for a movie that captured well the workings of a hyperintelligent mind since Thomas Hulce ruined Amadeus - an otherwise PERFECT film, Tim Curry was brilliant in the play - and Imitation Game coming out at the same time as the pathetic Theory of Everything made it just that much more transcendent.Loved it.
Cumberbatch seemed perfect for this hyperintelligent role, since he does it so well in Sherlock.Had been looking for a movie that captured well the workings of a hyperintelligent mind since Thomas Hulce ruined Amadeus - an otherwise PERFECT film, Tim Curry was brilliant in the play - and Imitation Game coming out at the same time as the pathetic Theory of Everything made it just that much more transcendent.

British television/cinema has made the Turing story several times, because it's probably considered the UK's most compelling 20th C story - combining three of their favorite things, Bletchley Park, buggery and elegant ###holery - but they've all been awful. Took a Cumberbatch to get that cluster#### right.Yea it was much, much better than The Theory of Everything.
One of the many things that struck me when watching it the first time was - not that long ago - people were sent to prison for being gay. Crazy.
I've decided that "Bletchley" is the ugliest word of all the romance languages.British television/cinema has made the Turing story several times, because it's probably considered the UK's most compelling 20th C story - combining three of their favorite things, Bletchley Park, buggery and elegant ###holery - but they've all been awful. Alas once again you are absolutely clueless.Keanu stunk, one of the worst...70% on RT?

I hated the overdone camera work in this. Constant movement, fast closeups, etc. That works in small doses but not for an entire picture.rockaction said:The Big Short - another Michael Lewis undervaluation classic. If you have a massive undervaluation, he'll pick up on it, and it'll be great in movie form. Loved Carrell in this movie, not so much Bale. I have no idea how he wound up as the "serious" actor when Carrell carried it. Gosling's bit role was awesome, too.
What are you talking about? The Jungle Book? That kid was a terrible actor, looked like a green screen with 1 live actor. I've had more fun watching a David Attenborough Nature documentary, at least the animals are real.mr fancypants said:Alas once again you are absolutely clueless.

Other than the George Michael and Keanu Reeves dream sequences, I was really disappointed. Just not funnyOK MOP you want to talk films. Since I have to spell it out for you. Jungle book was a beautifully crafted movie based on an animated film some 50 years ago.Your saying the kid was an awful actor. Guess what he was playing a kid. This didn't call for a Daniel Day Louis type performance. This is a just a movie you lose yourself in for 2 hrs. I liked Keanu as well although I can understand how others might not. I thought it was a whimsical comedy that just kind of passed the time. I'm not a Melissa McCarthy fan at all but I thought Spy was hilarious, especially Jason Stratham who played a bumbling macho spy.. It seems to me you go into these movies with a preconceived notion on how they should be to your standards vs. what they are actually trying to accomplish. I think the RT ratings support what I'm saying. Maybe if you could learn to relax and use your imagination you might find yourself enjoying these type of films.IMHOWhat are you talking about? I think you are one who seems clueless. Keanu? What a POS film that was, I laughed about as many times in that as I did that stupid McCarthy comedy last year called Spy. That had 90%+ on RT, one of the unfunniest films ever.
Since you care not to discuss the films but rather insult me, I'm thinking you're film reviews are not going to be on pace with say @KarmaPolice
