Retirement From Playing Fantasy Football? (1 Viewer)

but as we get older there's not much i like better than the chances to do fun things that don't matter with people who do
This is such a great sentiment - it's very much how I feel about the IDP league I commission, comprised of 11 people I've known for at least 1, and as many as 4 decades. It's a great way to keep in touch & have fun with old friends with a mutual appreciation for something we love as the excuse to make more time for each other.

I know folks my age (51) who have drifted apart from many of their friends over the years, and I feel for them - those are connections I cherish.

I love that sentiment. Excellent summary.

Bad news. It was a guy from the league that contacted me, and not the commissioner or czar. I was second on the waiting list and the guy jumped the gun. The first on the list took the team.

No Sflex for me.
There'll be another. I have faith that the right one will find you.

I'd be curious to know if anyone has left H2H leagues, but does more DFS and/or prop betting and that's proved a better go of it.

I think I'm so competitive that the whole H2H thing and luck factors drive me nuts. At lease with DFS I'm competing against a field and that with prop bets I'd gather I"m just competing more against myself. May be more tolerable and just as much fun.

I know this...three days later after winning my 2nd championship in the last three years in this one league I'm happy as hell it's over. Shouldn't be that way.

I did but DFS is even more brutal.  19% vig on the gpps.  Your win rate has to be insanely high to overcome that.

Quit years ago and love it. Hell, I can now see a day coming that I don’t even watch the NFL. It’s not the same game we watched growing up. Too many changes and it’s moving to 18 games.

I miss:

The draft

Dont miss:

-Stupid, asinine head to head format

-Second guessing WDIS.

-Morons trading their best player(s) for a gaggle of second tier players

-Injuries

Best ball, draft n' go solves all these problems.

After over 20 years of it, I quit playing 4 or 5 years ago.

I haven't regretted it for one minute since. I wish I would've quit sooner.

I enjoy watching football again in a way it's just not possible if fantasy football is a priority. If you can just play and not give a #### about the results, awesome.. I was never built that way. I'm especially glad I didn't invest time and energy into the last two years of the BS.

Go one year without out, see how it feels. I'd bet you won't go back.

Hmmm...are you watching the Monday nite game on pins and needles when one team is down 3 touchdowns and it's garbage team.  Are you watching Detroit v. Jax.  FF makes the game so much better.

^^ this is so very  true.

thats where the fun begins to erode. there's no more talk like 'hey you mustve done your homework you drafted a great team' . or hey that guy spends a lot of time studying players, matchups, etc.. at this point it's almost better to let the computer do your live draft for you. set your lineup for you.even do waivers for you.many sites have this capability. I wonder if there's anyway to tell if those that auto-draft have higher winning percentages and more championship victories than those who draft by themselves?

you had donors back in the day. the guys who never made the postseason but always paid the entrance fee, waiver fee, etc.

now those donors are winning titles, but not because they got better at this hobby.they got wise.let the computer do it.

Spring and summer draft n' go leagues.  If you figure out Stafford will be a boom for Kupp and Pitt will likely draft Harris and Ertz is too valuable of a talent to rot away, you will dominate leagues.

I retired from FF 4 seasons ago. Missed it some the first year mostly due to the camaraderie and draft days but got over it.

Do not regret it. Enjoy watching the games I do watch more. Have more free time for others and other activities.

Do not miss the constant updates for information during the week especially on game days and the agonizing over line up calls. I could go on.

Have always enjoyed and continue to enjoy the Football Guys site and the forums. Subscriber to this site for at least 10 years before I retired.

I barely did this when I was in multiple leagues

I'm only in two leagues these days and debating if I will go back or not.  It just doesn't bring me the same joy it used to.  I don't spend the time doing homework anymore and it shows as my team has aged without replacing any of the talent.  I used to be better with buying low and selling high.

Other commitments and other uses of my free time have taken priorty.  My son is getting into fantasy sports, so I might try a year of co-owning and see how that works out.

Pretty sure I'll be totally done with fantasy football in the next several years.

I used to stay up and watch Monday night football so I knew which FF owners won that week and how total points was looking even if I didn’t have any players going.  Tuesday mornings were rough, especially since I had stayed up watching Sunday night football the day before and was already going on little sleep.   Those days ended years ago and this season I didn’t even know which NFL teams were playing most weeks.  The NFL got boring to me and FF is following.  I don’t think I will miss FF but am happy for those that still enjoy FF and the NFL.

Haha that's my point. To me, that's not better.

I was that guy for about 20 years. I don't want to be that guy. Life is better NOT being that guy. Why would I want to be wasting my time watching a game where a team is racking up garbage time stats? Way better uses of my time out there.

Since quitting, I don't have any desire to be that guy. Getting away from fantasy football was a great decision, but clearly not a decision everyone would make. I enjoy watching football way more now than I ever did while playing it, and I don't feel like I should watch a crappy game because I'm starting a RB in it, I can watch the best games all the time.

For anyone feeling burned out by it, I'd still recommend taking a year off and seeing how you like it. Maybe you go back, maybe not, but you won't miss anything by doing that.

Lol I am without a doubt THAT guy.

And I'm kind of sick of being THAT guy.

I just don't know if there's a middle ground for me. It's not my personality. I'm either THAT guy...for fantasy football, other hobbies, work, whatever...or I'm completely OUT.

Don't get me wrong there was a time I did do it but not a lot. Sure the firat 5-10 years I was all in,  the last 15 not like that. I'd check my scores a couple time during the day. But I prepared for the draft, never submitted a bad lineup and was on top of it, last 3ish barely pay attention.  I used to have a huge advantage because I was the only one in the league really into CFB...so I had a huge advantage draft time (dynasty).... Now not so much

My league is a bunch of stodgy guys in their early 50s who have been in the same keeper  league since the early ‘90s (I joined in 2000 and have been commissioner the last 5). Unfortunately I’ve sensed the interest level waning in recent years - part of life. To keep the spice going, I got us to move to Superflex this year and hope to adopt FAAB this year. Hoping the added wrinkles get people rejuvenated.

Congrats?

Always good for folks to find what works for them. I'm glad that's working for you. I've zero interest in trying to change anyone's mind that doesn't want to be here.

But for us here, this is a board where we talk about playing and enjoying football. Specifically fantasy football.

This forum represents our business at Footballguys and it's how I make my almost all my income to support my family. So for those here that do want to continue playing and enjoying the game. We'll keep doing that here.

Thanks for the congrats, appreciate it (unless the question mark part was not sincere).

I was not the one who started this thread, I was just giving my experience and relating it to him.  I really doubt my opinion affected any of your subscribers but if so, I apologize.

And if that sort of thing is not allowed, by all means, delete it, I don't mind, you're the boss.

As for putting food on the table, I subscribed for 2 decades and never to any other site.  Not once.  But that's nothing compared to the number of friends and people at bars I ended up telling how valuable this site was for FF.

I also just entered your $200 playoff challenge -- which I'm sure I have no chance in since I'm not up to speed -- so hopefully that makes up for something.  (I will PM you my details should you wish to confirm as much.)

Thanks. I don't have time to not be sincere. I always try to mean what I say. Thanks.

And thanks for being part of the forums and talking Fantasy Football and for having been a subscriber so long. Folks like you are why we're able to have this board. Without paying subscribers, this forum wouldn't exist. Thanks!
