Rocky and Creed movie discussion thread (1 Viewer)

Rocky II is the best one.
At the end of Rocky, Adrian and Rocky embrace in the ring with the great music playing and the crowd cheering and her "I love you" and his "I love you, too" provides an emotional wallop.
In Rocky II, she says "I love you" to the TV. That's a big reason that it's easily the worst of 1-4.
Not to mention...when she comes out of the locker room, with almost a sense of "I wonder how hes doing" cut to him rolling around on the floor, beaten badly, her turning away. That's a great edit and sequence of shots. Rocky 1 is top notch.
2 is good, 3 is good. 4 is good in it's own GO USA! kinda way. 5 is watchable. The creed ones are good too....but The first Rocky is definitely the standard bearer.

Side note: for those that are fans of the franchise, it's worth the 93 minutes of your time to check out Rocky IV - The Director's Cut. No robot, more Apollo story, more Drago. Less MTV music video and more movie. It's a better overall movie than the original version, but much like @Uruk-Hai separation rankings, if I'm drunk and wanting to be entertained, give me the original with robots, warts and all.
Meh…..it was ok. I actually prefer the original cut. It perfectly captured exactly what it was like in 1985.

You don’t redo the sistine chapel with different scenes. You don’t shorten Leonardo da Vinci’s David because it’s too tall. And you don’t mess with Rocky IV. Ever.

I think you're underselling the moment in II when you don't mention, "Except for my kid being born, this is the greatest night in the history of my life!"
:-)

Burgess. Meredith.

Rocky II was the best one because Burgess Meredith nailed his role and made the movie. The franchise should get on its hands and knees and thank the movie gods for gifting them a performance like his in Rocky II.

You guys hung up on Adrian are focusing on the wrong thing. There's not another scene in any Rocky movie that rivals the scene between Stalone and Meredith in the church in Rocky II. That's not even open for debate!

Mickey did make Rocky II a classic….no doubt. Burgess nailed it.

Surely you jest. I present to you the greatest scene in history

For flash and entertainment, okay, yes....this is on the podium for a medal. You want a clinic on acting, Rocky II.
My 10yr old self (age I was when it came out and who I am whenever watching it) cares nothing about your “acting”. 😉

I do LOVE Rocky IV.

The first time I saw rocky IV was my first full make out session in a movie theater. Good times

I still prefer the original cut. It is 1985 in a nutshell. My Rocky IV black muscle t-shirt with the two gloves is now the centerpiece of a blanket that me and my kids still use to this day. I LOVE that movie. But, I will say that the Director's cut (and I could be showing bias after watching the making of documentary) was more of what Stallone was looking for. Hell, it makes Drago almost human in the first fight and more sympathetic by the end. Makes the Adrian scenes make more sense and the Apollo scenes as well. Has more of a feeling of I or II, not just a juiced up version of III.

The original Rocky put boxing in general on the map with non boxing fans and actually inspired people like Vinny Pazienza ,the pazmaninan devil , to go onto a great boxing career.

Rocky was a great story , Rocky 2 had great heart , Rocky 3 was incredible for the way it reinvented the story and had so many awesome scenes and great music.

Rocky 4 was fun and patriotic but the glaring stumble that i couldnt believe they would allow was the fact that Rockys kid was 9 yo , then he aged 5 years during Rockys flight back from Russia , talk about lazy writing ,just so they could let Stallone's real kid ,Sage to be in the movie ,Rocky 5 , which was absolutely awful BTW.

Rocky Balboa got back on track and found its heart again, went back to its roots . Great flick .

The Creed movies are fun and have great actors , seeing Rocky playing a coach for Apollos son is a great way to keep the storyline alive . I like the way they had Rocky tell Adonis at the end of Creed 2 ''This is your time kid '' and had Rocky sit down in the stands . He handed the torch over to a new series ....Creed minus Rocky

For the first 4 I've heard people make the argument that they kept getting better and better. Almost universally Rocky V is an abomination that shouldn't exist. I think I'll go:

Rocky
Rocky IV
Rocky III
Creed
Rocky II
Creed 2
Rocky Balboa
Rocky V

I would have never guessed that anyone outside of devout James Brown fans would rank Rocky IV ahead of Rocky III, but there appears to be a BUNCH of you. Madness, I say.

So in Rocky IV they’re rich. In Rocky V he’s poor. Do they explain in V where his money went?

I had watched IV the other day and left the tv on. Came back, V was on, and it was so bad I couldn’t watch it, but I do want to know how he lost all his cash.

When he went to Russia to fight Drago, Paulie signed over power of attorney to someone who then stole their money. Something like that......

My babysitter way back when was in Rocky V (she was the son's girlfriend, Jewel) and, IIRC*, the explanation was that Rocky blew the money on stupid stuff - like that robot - and wound up broke like a lot of professional athletes do/did as they didn't plan for retirement at such an early age. Also, something about bad investments.

*We're talking ~30 years ago and relying on my then 10-year-old brain and memory.

It may be my generation. The Rocky IV soundtrack was HUGE back in the day and like all my coaches were playing it during practices, before games, etc. It's also really tough to beat that Rocky IV training montage in the cold and wilderness plus he's fighting for his friend against Russia so, for us children, that was an easier story to connect with. As such, growing up, Rocky IV was always my favorite.

However, when I re-watched them last (I dunno, maybe like ten years ago?) I realized how kind of silly Rocky IV was and I agree Rocky III is just a much better movie.

I would describe myself as obsessed with the Rocky franchise. I've been to Philly and visited spots like Mickey's gym, the pet store, Rocky's apartment, etc. Love this thread so far.

Rocky
Rocky 3
Creed
Rocky 4
Rocky 2
Creed 2
Rocky Balboa
Rocky 5
Creed 3

1) Not many have Creed up that high. I loved the way it mirrored the original Rocky and how they tied in lots of characters/clips from the past.
2) Rocky 4 slips for me because of the horrific accents, the outdated technology and the fact Rocky fought an unsanctioned bout, in Russia, for free.
3) I turned off Creed 3 with a half hour left. Hated every bit of it.

Fun fact - Paulie's last name is Pennino.

Started my twins on the Rocky franchise last week. First up was Rocky III and it hit all the right notes for us. I hadn't seen it in years; forgot that Mick kind of screwed Rocky over by lining up tomato can opponents after he won the belt. Mr. T was such a good villain. I know he's a little cartoonish, but man, he was a bad mofo in that.

Then we went to Rocky IV which is always going to hold a special place in my heart but my god is it cheesy. And like 20 minutes of it is just clips of other Rocky movies. But, another home run and now I'm a little torn. Do we go with Rocky or Rocky II?

The bold and I'm not sure why it would even be a debate.

You probably should have started in order as there is less action in 1 and 2 and may be a down grade, depending on the age of your kids.

Why would you not run them in order? This is liable to be pretty jarring for them.

Because Rocky is like a soap opera. These kids are 7. They want action not a love story.

How I grew up I guess. Rocky III was first, then Rocky IV and then Rocky II. I didn't see the original until I was an adult. I dunno, I'm broken I guess.

Hmmm I have several kids right around that same age. I'd probably just wait until they're 10 or so and show them in order. Maybe your 7 year olds are more mature than mine, but I don't either of my 7 year olds (or my 8 year old) would love any Rocky other than my son probably enjoying the boxing scenes - and then him inevitably trying to re-enact them on his sisters.

I think we'll stick to Toy Story or Moana for action at this time.

That's not what I was saying, my friend. I didn't realize they were the younger group, but I'm wondering how the story would make sense. I saw them in order on release, so it's probably a lack of imagination on my part in that they could be watched in any other way until you've seen them all.

No offense meant.

Really? Why?
Damian has been out of prison for a week or so and he's asking Donny to get him a shot at the Heavyweight title? He then wins the title? With no professional experience, I mean, I know other Rockys have pretty far fetched pieces but I feel like when you make these movies today? They need to be rooted in some realism and that stuff just doesn't happen.

Adonis told him he was out of his mind. Damian didn't want to believe it, plus he was burning with hate after a couple of decades in prison. He's the most believable antagonist in the entire series, IMO. Hell, he's more believable than Rocky or Adonis.

For the record, Stallone was not involved in this movie "because the story had been given a direction with which he did not agree". Unsure what that direction was, but it ain't a Rocky without Rocky.

All good brother, I wasn't offended at all, just some self deprecating shots at myself. ;)

You have to remember I've got two boys in college and a ten year old girl going on 30. The twins are growing up in the fast lane....

I'm well aware that Stallone wasn't involved. Knew it going in, so I didn't expect him to be. From what I read, the "direction with which he did not agree" was that he wasn't going to be in it or be able to control the story

I dunno........ Given that I knew Stallone wasn't involved before I watched and that he being in it was the most important thing for me, I wouldn't have wasted my time hate-watching it for 100 minutes then turned it off with 30 to go.

I'd say Rocky. Rocky 2 has some really good acting in it, but I think the kids would be surprised to see Rocky lose at the end. (spoiler, sorry)

Updating my list now that I've seen Creed III:

Rocky
Rocky IV
Rocky III
Creed
Rocky II
Creed 3
Creed 2
Rocky Balboa
Rocky V

Again, I love/like all the Rocky and Creed movies except for the one that shan't be named. I was dangerously close to putting Creed III over Rocky II, I think only nostalgia holds the place for me. As good as Rocky II is, the pace is plodding on it. Rocky III and IV are just unabashed cheesefests that I still enjoy watching. The first is the epitome of an underdog story and I weigh the kickoff to a franchise highly, usually resulting in the top slot in my rankings (Empire Strikes Back being the worthwhile exception).

Creed III was very solid......yet I rank it last in the Creed trilogy (it’s gotta be over after III). All three Creed movies were great. But I loved II the most. It oozed Rocky cannon. Was great to see Drago Next Gen. Great character.

So my rankings are now:

Rocky
Rocky III
Rocky IV
Rocky II
Rocky Balboa
Creed II
Creed
Creed III

Rocky V

Only one true stinker in the lot......and I still watch that abomination when I do a marathon.

Similar story here. I saw Rocky III first, then II on VCR, then IV came out, and I finally saw Rocky as an older teenager. Watching Rocky again as an adult, I'm often moved by it. It's just a great movie.

"Ain't gonna be no rematch"

"Don't want one"

BUM BUM BUM
BUM BUM BUM
BUM BUM BUM BUM BUM BUM BUM

You're doing the Lord's work showing this series to your children.
