The critical stage in Ryan Mathews' return to the field was first getting cleared for contact.

He may have reached it.

The Chargers running back practiced Thursday in a helmet and full pads, five weeks from the day he broke his clavicle in the preseason. The injury occurred Aug. 9 against the Packers on Mathews' first exhibition carry.

He was given a four-to-six week timetable to recover.

If, five weeks later, Mathews has indeed been cleared, he has Thursday and Friday's practice to get ready for the Chargers' home opener Sunday against the Titans.

Coach Norv Turner has said he doesn't anticipate cardio being an issue in Mathews' ability to return to the field.

“There's no question in my mind he can run,” Turner said Aug. 28. “He's been out here running on the field, doing drills and those types of things. As soon as that thing heals, he'll be ready to go.”

Mathews participated in individual drills last week and worked to the side Wednesday.

RB Ryan Mathews dressed, but don't count on him playing

By Dan McLellan | CBSSports.com

RB Ryan Mathews was fully dressed for practice on Thursday for the first time since he broke his right clavicle in the preseason opener on August 9. But don't rush to any conclusions that Mathews will play this Sunday against the Titans.

During individual drills, the running backs worked with a blocking sled. Mathews did not participate. He avoided the stress the contact would have put on his healing clavicle.

Mathews was originally anticipated to miss four-to-six weeks. This Sunday would mark five weeks and three days since he underwent surgery. The likelihood of Mathews reinjuring the shoulder dramatically decreases every week coach Norv Turner waits to bring him back.

The Chargers will conclude their preparations for the Titans with a walk-thru on Friday. It's extremely doubtful Mathews would play in a game after not fully participating in a practice for over five weeks. That scenario would raise the risk of Mathews suffering a separate injury.

With Fred Jackson getting hurt, I could really use Mathews this week. But if he waits another week and his risk of getting re-injured the rest of the year is extremely minimal, then I'd rather have that then see Mathews go down for another 6 weeks by re-breaking his clavicle. But this is great news as it indicates he'll almost certainly be back next week.

As a Mathews owner with a 0-1 team, I really need him to start this week as well since I currently have D.Brown as my rb2 starting and my flex options aren't strong either. That being said, If he's not 100% then I'd prefer that he sits out this week and is good to go for next week and hopefully the rest of the season.

@UTKevinAcee: Appears Ryan Mathews will play on Sun vs. TEN. Limited in practice but did take some contact in team drills for 1st time since injury on 8/9

@UTKevinAcee: “@Original_Gio: Pitch count for Mathews?" >Don't know & don't know if team knows ... I've always been under impression Wk 3 was target.

Lets just pray that he survives this week.

I would be playing against Mathews in two leagues this week and I'm not sure if I want him to play or not. He could definitely be on a snap count. Hm..

Hope that collar bone holds up. Think rushing him back ha anything to do with that pitiful week 1 performance from brown and Brinkley? Lol

why would he be on a snap count? everything I've read is people raving about his conditioning because that's all he's been able to do.

My guess is because they'd be worried about the bone holding up.I think they'd be foolish to put him out there at all if they were really that afraid of him re-injuring it.Actually, I think I just talked myself into starting him if he is going to play. I just can't see them being willing to use him at all if there is still any concern of him re-breaking it. If he's in, I'm treating it as a full go.

:excited: I need him out there BADLY. I got a bunch o' guys at RB who seemed a lot more appealing 10 days ago.
Yeah, Peyton Hillis was lookin real good in my lineup after my draft. Not as much now.And Kevin Smith was great week 1 but not liking that 49er matchup. IF Mathews bone is healed enough to where they don't think it's significant reinjury risk, roll him out there and let's go!

I hear that. Fred Jackson, Ryan Williams, Rashad Jennings, Ryan Mathews and Ahmad Bradshaw looked pretty good to me to start the season. MJD comes back, Jennings and Jackson both blow out their knees in the first half and Ryan Williams just gets clobbered behind the atrocious Arizona line. I need Mathews back badly now. But at the same time, rushing him back and getting him re-injured would effectively end my season at this point. I could take 0-2 if it means a 100% Mathews the rest of the way.

It 'appears' RB Mathews will play vs. Titans

According to the Union-Tribune San Diego's Kevin Acee, it "appears" Ryan Mathews (clavicle) will play versus the Titans on Sunday.

"I'm exactly where I want to be" to play Sunday, Mathews said after taking hits in Thursday's limited practice for the first time since Aug. 9. Mathews is leaving the decision up to coach Norv Turner, who was vague on his feature back's availability Thursday evening. Acee isn't sure if the team even knows yet whether Mathews would be on a pitch count if he does indeed play. Although Mathews has the look of a RB2 fantasy option, owners should check back Friday afternoon for the official injury report.

The forum is to commiserate. Nice to hear other people running into same stuff out of the gate.

People are so protective of the sanctity of the post. Chill.

So we get the news that he is likely to play but get this opinion from FBG:

Mathews was hit in team drills Thursday for the first time since being injured back at the beginning of the preseason. It's dangerous to start him this week as they may ease him back into the lineup against the Titans.
Easing him back in doesn't make much sense. Either the bone is healed or it isn't. Unless he is grossly out of shape, why wouldn't you expect him to play the whole game?

Anyone inserting him in your lineup this week? Can't decide if I want to throw him out there yet, will probably just keep SJax in and run Reggie Wayne in the flex

No, it isnt.ETA quote from Joe in the locked thread at the top of the forum:

Mathews cleared for contact, but whether he plays Sunday is uncertain

September 13, 2012

By SCOTT BAIR

Ryan Mathews has been cleared for contact. Whether the Tennessee Titans will get a crack at him Sunday afternoon is another matter.

The Chargers' star running back took a big step toward returning to game action on Thursday afternoon, when he put on pads and increased his activity level for the first time since breaking his clavicle Aug. 9.

But, to say he truly tested his surgically repaired right clavicle might be an overstatement. He was limited in practice, but the effort offered a glimmer of hope that the dynamic playmaker could return for the home opener.

Mathews desperately wanted to play Monday night at Oakland. He was denied that opportunity, and subsequently re-focused his efforts on the Titans game. There is no guarantee he'll play, and some signs to suggest he won't.

A source indicated weeks ago that the team was targeting a Sept. 23 return against the Atlanta Falcons, at the earliest. That would complete Mathews' recovery at six weeks, the standard timetable for a surgically repaired broken clavicle.

Mathews has been pushing for a faster return since the day he got hurt.

"I feel like I'm a caged lion," Mathews said. "I can't do what I want to do and produce like I know I can. I can't wait to get back out there, but you have to be patient and give it the time it needs to heal right. It's a broken bone, so I have to wait."

Whether that's a few days or another week remains unclear. So are the specifics of Thursday's activity. Running backs never get taken to the ground in practice and rarely get hit square, if ever.

"You really don't hit guys at my position," Mathews said. "Practice in pads gave me the feeling of running with them, so it's hard to tell (how getting hit is going to feel), but the trainer's believe I'm healing up fine.

"You have to work back into it slowly but surely. The game's fast, and when you're out as long as I've been, it'll take a little time to get acclimated with the speed again. It's important to start fitting in."

The Chargers have slowly eased him back into work. He participated in individual drills last week, and his activity was ramped up yet again after a weekly X-ray confirmed that his bone is healing properly.

Mathews wouldn't say it was fully healed when asked directly, a major blow to his playing prospects. Otherwise, Mathews is in perfect health. He has stayed in terrific cardiovascular shape, in order to be ready when he's cleared to play.

"I felt like it was time for me to go last week, but it's ultimately their decision," Mathews said. "Whatever they want to do. I want to play, but it's up to (Chargers coach Norv Turner). We'll take it day by day. We still have a few days left, and I'm going to be out there working. I'm happy to be back with the team."

His team really needs him back. The Chargers running game struggled mightily without him, producing a paltry 1.6-yard average on 20 carries. That trend existed in the preseason, when the running game couldn't get off the ground without its workhorse.

"I know the guys were down a little bit because they didn't get a bunch of yards, but that's how a game goes sometimes," Mathews said. "I'm proud of them, and I liked watching the guys run and block."

Mathews brings extra speed and agility to a powerful running style that averaged 4.9 yards per rush last season. He's better in pass protection and still plans to be the team's feature back.

The team wants offensive balance hard to achieve without its star, but it won't change their plan for him in a rush. Turner generally likes his players to return to full practice before playing, with tight end Antonio Gates as an exception to the rule.

Whether Mathews is allowed to compete this Sunday or next, the risk of re-injury is always present.

"At some point, he has to go play," Turner said. "In a game, anything can happen to you. There are no guarantees. We're going to get Ryan ready, and when he is ready, he's going to play."

Been putting major pressure trying to get him from the Matthews owner...still nothing. Hoping to do it before he got back into practice like this and really hoping now before he sees any game action.

There was one little mention of his team that in a post that was mainly talking about RB injuries. You guys are getting almost as bad as those guys in the Middle East upset about a crappy Youtube video.

if he plays, absolutely. as a previous poster said, it's a collarbone issue. not sure why he would need eased back. it's not a leg or muscle/ligament issue.

You better ramp up that pressure to Defcon 1 status. After he's back you won't have a prayer of getting him.I got lucky and was able to pry him away from the owner in my league....major challenge but mission accomplished.

Michael Gehlken of the Union-Tribune San Diego expects Ryan Mathews (questionable, collarbone) to be inactive for Week 2.Gehlken goes to every practice and Norv Turner press conference, so he's got a better read than anyone when it comes to Chargers injury analysis. Gehlken expects Mathews to miss one more week, and Antonio Gates (questionable, foot) to play against the Titans. Mathews does appear to be on track to play in Week 3 against Atlanta, which was his most realistic return date all along.
Looks like we won't know for sure until the inactives are listed for the late games Sunday.I'm tempted to roll the dice and wait on my late game options but at least it looks like it should be 2 weeks at most as many of us felt all along.

Mathews having a late afternoon game sucks. I can't risk taking a zero from my RB.

I'm gonna put Dwyer in the lineup (UGH!) and pray he does something. We'll get 'em next week with Ryan!

Since we're doing this.

I have Hillis in the lineup now but am thinking of just going with Dwyer if Mathews is inactive.
