San Francisco 49ers - link to new 2023 thread in latest post (1 Viewer)

Trey Lance ranked 21st in QBR in Week 1. Not great but bad in a monsoon

Here's all the QBs, in order, that finished with a LOWER rating than Lance week 1:

Fields
Burrow
Brissett
Mayfield
Carr
D. Jones
Stafford
Rodgers
Flacco
Dak
Mac Jones

Yates:

With Elijah Mitchell on IR, the 49ers worked out RBs Devonta Freeman, Tevin Coleman, Nate McCrary, Abram Smith, La’Mical Perine, Godwin, Igwebuike and hosted Marlon Mack on a visit.

Schefter:

49ers are signing former Texans’ RB Marlon Mack to their practice squad, per source

They spent 2 third round picks at a low value position and they are still scrambling after a week 1 injury. Frustrating.

Yep. Should have kept Hasty as the 5th rostered RB and kept 3 TEs instead of 4. Why do we need 4 TEs? RBs are always needed and any 4th TE we wanted would have prob cleared waivers and could have been on the practice squad.

On the Candlestick Chronicles pod, they mentioned that the Bears didn’t blitz a single time during the game and were still managing to create pressure. That’s perhaps the most alarming statistic I’ve heard about the loss this far.
The OL is trash.

All the local off-season chatter on sports radio focused solely on Lance and how this is a SB-winning window for the 49ers and how could they possibly trust Lance.

And I kept looking at our makeshift ragtag OL thinking, “it is?”

JimmyG would look even worse behind that line. SB-window, my booty. The failed to build a competent OL. That’s the cardinal sin of football.

The OL was my main concern too going into this season.

That said, the interior OL actually played decent last week. Burford and Banks held their own for the most part, Brendel was not good, and both Trent Williams and McGlinchey both allowed multiple pressures and McGlinchey gave up a sack.

I'm hoping the line gets better as the season goes on, as we all know it takes time for a line to gel, and it's possible in a few weeks we wonder what we were so worried about.

I think Brendel is the weak link, and I'm hoping they sign or draft a center next offseason. Until then, fingers crossed that our run game can keep play action an option and Lance won't have to constantly improvise on the fly.

Totally agree. I’ve been hoping I’ve just being missing something and these guys will be serviceable, but I have no reason the believe that will actually be true.

And of course the dagger is that poor oline play is going to kill Lance's development...

Great, back to the Jimmy Niners. It’s just not fun rooting for him. Maybe he can be Flacco this season… that one playoff run where he was actually good, but more likely he’ll fold at some point.

Hard to imagine, if he is out the rest of year, what happens now. You have a great team and now a rookie qb that hasn't played a single meaningful game in 2 years coming off a college career with little experience.

Jimmys contract incentives:

  • No Trade Clause
  • No Tag Clause for 2023
  • Incentives:

  • $250,000 per game where he takes 25% of snaps ($100,000 more per win)

  • $500,000 with 50% snaps in a playoff game

  • Extra $500,000 with 50% snaps in the NFC Championship game
Extra $500,000 with an NFC Championship win

  • Extra $1M with 50% snaps in the Super Bowl

So he will now get an extra $250k per game, plus an extra $100k per win

We have to literally be the only team who could lose their starting QB and still be a legit contender, if not better.

Sources: The 49ers and standout LB Dre Greenlaw have reached an agreement on a 2-year contract extension, keeping another home-grown player in the fold for the future. He signs his deal coming off a 7 tackle game

I guess the bright side is that Jimmy has the chance to play well enough to get the kind of contract this offseason that will net the Niners a decent compensatory pick.
