San Francisco 49ers - link to new 2023 thread in latest post (4 Viewers)

Thanks for showing up once a year for us, Santa Drummer.
My life is so much less fulfilling now that I know this thread isn't anywhere near Tic-Toc

What a sad, little man

I don't know what this means, but I can only guess it was part of a rant that had nothing to do with anything.

Dudes got issues.
I know you have him on ignore, but I couldn't resist sharing the opening paragraph for your holiday enjoyment :ponder:

It's not hard to figure out what was missing on a team built on defense and the run game, which needed at least a serviceable QB who wasn't playing for a contact this season. Your millennial Tech Bro 49ers are not your grandfathers QB driven team. I mean there isn't much of a difference in 49ers QBs this season other than they can last a few games and have fresher arms and legs but still are not Josh Allen or even Justin Herbert or TUANON. If you want a soothsayer, go to a guy who was fired from KNBR because he pissed off Felipe Alou. It wasn't like he was bagging on brain dead Carribean players throwing slop with the San Francisco Giants that got him fired during the Alou era. It's not because he and Rod Brooks were let go on the "Sports Leader" on KNBR due to streamers like Grant Cohn flipping takes.

It's not hard to figure out....blah blah blah

Lol...theres never anything interesting or relevant in his posts, he mostly just rambles on about past regimes and bitches about Jimmy. I can't even follow that paragraph you quoted because it goes off the rails so fast about nothing to do with the 49ers or even football. It's so bizarre.

Small sample size, but....

Brock Purdy has completed 70.6% of his throws this season that have a targeted depth of 10+ yards downfield. Among QBs with 30+ attempts of 10 yards or more that not only leads the NFL but the next closest is Tua at 61.9%.
Upon really thinking about it, I do have one major concern:

I don’t believe he has played at all from behind? Feels like that is inevitable in a playoff game at some point. Really would like that to happen at least once in the next two weeks, battle test him a little bit.

That's what having CMac in the backfield will do for any most QBs.

Maybe he can suck early in the next couple games so they can play from behind. Maybe throw a couple pick 6s

Playoff games will obviously be closer but if he runs the offense like he is doing now, he will be fine. People were worried about playing the Bucs and going up against Brady and he passed with flying colors. Then going to Seattle and the pressure of a true hostile enviroment, and he was fine. Kid is a cool customer

Having CMC has changed the whole dynamic of this offense. Their other RBs were not good pass catchers and that was an obvious flaw since Shanahan took over, which is really odd in itself considering how much he threw to the backs in Atlanta.

Laughed at all the 49er fans who whined about giving up "all that draft capital" for someone who you knew would thrive in this system. Seems like a bargain now especailly considering that the picks will be in the later rounds

Well, we were down 7-3 when he took over for Jimmy in the Miami game, and he led a 10 play, 54 yard drive that ended with a 3yd TD pass to Cmac.

We haven't been behind in a game since.

Raiders hesd coach Josh McDaniels is benching Derek Carr for the remainder of the season...Jarrett Stidham will be making his first NFL start this weekend against the 49ers and their #1 defense.

🤣

It turned out to be a fantastic move, but let's not pretend there weren't reasonable and good faith contemporaneous criticisms about SF's allocation of resources at the position and whether they were capable of contending at that point such that a trade like that made sense.

Also, CMC had missed most of the previous 2 seasons with injuries, so it was definitely a gamble.

Niners facing Stidham and Colt McCoy to end the season. Hopefully that means the Niners will get to rest some veterans down the stretch and maybe get some younger players some reps - DBs in particular. For example, Charvarious Ward has been banged up and it'd be helpful if depth guys like Ambry Thomas could get back in the swing of things.

I guess I wasn't worried about the injuries of the previous 2 seasons, since he was healthy at the point of the trade and the previous injuries weren't ones that were still impacting his play. RBs have a higher rate of injury. Always a bigger gamble. Frank Gore was considered injury prone by many until he wasn't.

Also, by the time the trade was made, it was obvious the Rams were in a decline stage and Seattle was a pretender, so it put the 49ers in the drivers seat for the division. I never thought the comp was excessive. If you compare to what they gave for Sanders in 2019, it was pretty damn good and I thought the Sanders trade was fine, even though it was basically a rental, which CMC isn't

Guess the Raiders are looking at draft position. Carr has been kind of sucky, but still way better than Stidham.

49ers just went from 6 point favorites to 10 point favorites.
I looked at this yesterday and talked to some gambling buds, it felt like a trap to me, pretty sad I didn’t hit it.

I did just smash the +700 for the SB pretty aggressively though. Love this team, LFG!! Purdy like a Brady story!

I hated the trade, but honestly, I hated it bc of the capital we already gave up for Lance along with the injury history of CMC. Let’s just hope he stays healthy! Let’s hope they don’t go nuts with his touches these next 2 weeks.

But honestly, I hated it the most bc of Jimmy G, just didn’t think we could win with him. With him gone, huge fan! I’m all in on Purdy, love the kid!!

Ooof. What do you homers think of playing Stidham? Exactly how good is your defense? I mean, I know it's good. I've seen it in fits and starts. Fast and tough. But will they blanket...say...Davante Adams and allow him very little? Asking for a friend.

Okay, I'm figuring out whether to bench the guy in FF or not. I'm leaning benching him and/or Metcalf. They're running right into death traps, best I can make of it.

Well, hard for "your friend" to sit Adams, but don't expect much. My guess is Stidham is checking down a lot as 49ers will bring the pressure.

This defense is incredible. So fast and everyone around the ball trying to knock it out. Going to be a long day for the Raiders

This is is a really cool atricle by Matt Barrows, who was given permission by Shanahan to be in the locker room during halftime of the 49ers - Bucs game to be a fly on the wall.

Bananas, bathroom breaks and whiteboard work: A trip inside the 49ers’ halftime locker room where two players, Fred Warner and Brock Purdy, stood out the most...

Glad to see they're keeping Deebo out this week. Get him some action next week and he will be ready to go Wildcard weekend.

#49ers status report for Week 17 vs. #Raiders via coach Kyle Shanahan:

OUT

QB Jimmy Garoppolo (foot)
DL Kevin Givens (knee)
WR Deebo Samuel (ankle, knee)

Questionable

DL Kerry Hyder (ankle)
CB Ambry Thomas (ankle)

49ers have now scored 30-plus points in four of their last five.

Had done that just three times in previous 17 games.

Wow.

Defense was bad. Warner with 2 HUGE penalties that lead to Raider points.

Brock with some bad throws, but hes still cool under pressure and needed a game like this under his belt IMO. He got lucky by only throwing 1 INT. Raiders should have had 3.

Lenoir is TERRIBLE. No clue why Ambry Thomas or Jackrabbit Jenkins didn't get action over him.

This game is a wake up call. Gotta tighten up before the playoffs.

Good game for the offense to show that they can bail out the defense. That being said, it's a good wake-up call game for the D to not take any one lightly. Maybe they thought the Raiders would just roll over because they benched their starter but Stidham didn't play scared.
Huge play by Bosa to cause the INT in OT that won't show up on the box score!
Heard something that the 49ers can be the #1 seed if the Eagles lose. Is that true?

If Eagles lose next week and we win, we will be the #1 seed.

Giants won't be a pushover. Eagles at home and if Hurts plays, they probably win. If not, Giants can pull it off.

I believe the Giants are locked into the #6 seed...if so, they will have nothing to play for.

Hope you started him.

I did. I'm still likely to lose my finals match-up. But it won't be because of Jarrett Stidham. That was a barn-burner of a game today.

I did not bench Metcalf, either. That was a poor decision, but I'll stick by the process. I didn't really have any better prospective options.

Back to the 49ers, though. Purdy looked better than I thought he would, still. But you have to wonder what's going to happen when he sees a pass rush like Philly or Dallas. We won't know until we see it.

Probably the same as "wait until he faces the pressure of playing against the GOAT (Brady)", "wait until he faces Seattle on the road" or "wait until he has to bring them back from behind late in a game". I get what you're saying, but he has passed all the tests so far. Kid has it and will be fine.

Daboll said they are playing to win next week and not sitting anyone. Hopefully he means it

As an aside, the Vikings are 12-4 with a -19 point differential. How is that even possible?

Negatives from the game: Purdy’s lack of arm strength reared it’s head on multiple plays and it’s a weakness that can be exploited; losing Banks for an extended period of time is a material loss; Hufanga has been sneaky bad recently and no one not named Ward (and maybe Gipson) can be trusted in the secondary.

Positives: Purdy had a few bad plays but played with poise even a veteran like Jimmy rarely displays. There are so many playmakers on offense that this team can keep up in a shootout. This had a very 2019 Saints game vibe, which was a key game in that squad’s development as a true title contender.

Yeah one of the main takeaways is the offense can pick up the slack and keep up in a shootout if the defense isn't playing well, which is pretty huge and something this team hasn't had in a while.

Next week is a get right game and playoff tuneup.

I have a feeling Mr Rodgers may be making a trip out west in a couple of weeks.

If the 49ers remain in the No. 2 seed, they’d play the No. 7 seed in first round of playoffs.

No. 7 seed scenarios:

🏈 Packers clinch with win vs. Lions

🏈 Lions clinch with win at GB AND Seahawks loss to Rams

🏈 Seahawks clinch with win vs. Rams AND GB loss to Lions

Per Matt Maiocco

None of those teams are particularly intimidating but I don’t love the idea of a red hot Rodgers coming into town with the chance to avenge all his prior playoff failures against SF.

I think all 3 teams present challenges, and none would be easy wins.

Seattle: it's hard to beat a team 3 times in a season, and Seattle is always tough against us.

Detroit: Offense is sneaky good. Defense is suspect at best but Hutchinson is becoming a force on the D line. I think Goff might still have nightmares of playing us. That said, they're scrappy and hungry for kneecaps.

Green Bay: Rodgers is always dangerous, and even though we've owned them lately, bounces are going their way and they're hot right now.

Gonna be interesting and fun!

49ers QB Brock Purdy has a TD % of 6.7 on 150 attempts this season.

To put that in perspective, Patrick Mahomes leads the league at 6.4% (Purdy’s attempts aren’t enough to qualify).

The only other QBs w/ 150-plus attempts at or over 6% are Tua, Dak, Allen, & Burrow.

None of those teams worry me. 49ers are just better

Detroit on the road, outside is not nearly as good as at home in the dome. Pass defense is really bad and they got steam rolled by the Panthers run game. 49ers can score at will against them

They own Green Bay. Stop the run and no receivers that scare you except Watson. Put Mooney Ward on him and they got nothing

The "it's hard to beat a team 3 times in a season" scenario is only true before you play the first game. After you have beat them twice already, it's much easier to beat them 3 times. And they will if they play them, especially at home.

Normally not this confident, but only team in the NFC that worries me is Philly, if Hurts is healthy. Dallas at their place would, but not on the road.

Kind of disagree with the arm strength comment. On the pick to Kittle, he was late throwing the ball and then underthrew it. He made several bad throws down the field, but hard to be perfect. I honestly don't think it was an arm strength issue.

He does kind of lock on Kittle and Aiyuk. On the drive they kicked the FG to go up 27-24, he missed a wide open Kroft for a TD (threw short to Aiyuk) and then missed a wide open McCloud for a TD (forced it into Kittle). Part of the growth process, but he had time on both throws to go through his reads and neither Aiyuk or Kittle were open to force a throw in with that much time.

Another good game for the kid though.
