Snowmageddon 2013 (2 Viewers)

14" here overnight... no hysteria.. no panic.. it's winter in Michigan.

Ya'll are a bunch of sissies...
:goodposting: The reaction we're having here over a little snow is what I remember when I was going to school in Washington DC back in the 1970's. Everything would shut down over a couple inches of snow. Road maintenance consisted of a couple of minority workers with shovels in the back of a dumptruck full of sand.
The bolded gets to why it's usually silly for people in places like Michigan to make fun of people in more southern states for freaking out over snow. When you regularly get a ton of snow, as you prseumably do in Michigan, you've got the infrastructure in place to deal with it efficiently, everyone has a lot of experience driving in it, etc. Meanwhile, the same exact amount of snowfall elsewhere is a once in fifty years kind of occurrence. It doesn't make them "sissies" because they're not prepared with the resources to deal with it as effectively.
Did States in the Northeast migrate South??
I think this makes it official. New York is not Northeast. It's Mid-Atlantic. If you live in an area that has "North" anywhere in the region, you can't freak the #### out this much about some snow.
All due respect to Michigan, there's something adjacent to the northeast states called the Atlantic Ocean, that occasionally provides monumental amounts of moisture, resulting in big snowfalls. When I looked up the top 10 biggest snowstorms in Detroit history, it's actually kind of funny compared to what falls in the northeast:

24.5 inches April 6, 1886

19.3 inches December 1 – 2, 1974

Tie: 14.0 inches March 4 – 5, 1900 and February 28 - March 1, 1900

13.8 inches December 18 – 19, 1929

12.8 inches February 12 – 13, 1894

12.6 inches February 19, 1908

12.5 inches January 31 - February 1, 1881

Tie: 12.3 inches on February 9, 1911 and March 3 – 4, 1895

12.2 inches January 22-23, 2005

12.1 inches January 13-14, 1927

Meanwhile, tonight will be Boston's third storm of more than 22 inches in less than 10 years.

Starting to get into the meat of the storm here in RI, over 6 inches on the ground and wind is picking up with snow swirling in all directions. I've already had the snow blower out, this is some heavy, sticky snow. Thinking about heading back out around 10 to clear the driveway and then calling it a night.

From a meteorological standpoint, there are a lot of similarities between MI and NY. In both states, the annual (or single storm) snowfall totals for the large population center in the SE corner is in no way comparable to the snowfall levels of points north and west.

I have been busy with other things but looks like I had better start preparing for this storm... I took out the candles and filled up on filtered water. In the fridge i have a dozen eggs, some tomatoes, hummus, some flat bread, and apple cider.

Now over 74mph in Nantucket. Heavy, wet snow closet to the city in Boston but dryer out west. Some power outages getting reported.

I love the reporters who get stuck standing out in the middle of this.

"It's snowing hard and it's VERY windy! You can see this because I am being blown over and I'm covered in snow!!! Back to you."

Detroit is on the east side of the state. Western Michigan acts like Buffalo with lake effect. Big difference.

Re-posting from GMs thread. My power is out. Tried going to a friend's house...got stuck getting out of the driveway...20 minutes later I'm out, get to his place and his power had just #### the bed...coming back home couldn't get the car up the hill so it's parked 2 blocks away...trudged home soaking wet, freezing cold, and filled with a rage only MoP can relate to. Had an offer of drinking and "board games" from the waitress that wants the Homer-lovin, but I was just too pissed to go back out. But hey, at least I have beer to help me freeze to death. FML

This is wet, heavy, nasty ####. Every tree under 15 feet is down in my yard, power lines are down, and the wind is currently about a steady 40 mph.

:goodposting: This is really bad. My truck is in the driveway and I can barely tell it's there.Windy as hell and the trees in the front yard are about to tap out. I'm just hoping the roof doesn't cave in.

Homer is on long island and we haven't hung out? wtf

This "blizzard" was a real dud in Long Island. Got a nice snowfall. It's super peaceful out there now, all done. Yawn.

 (post 210)

When I lived in Grand Rapids in the first year after college, we'd get like an inch or two in the evening, and I would call my dad, who had just retired on Lake Michigan. "Man, been snowing for two hours here" Yep, going on ten hours here

Lake effect storms just churn and churn on the coast. Somebody upthread mentioned the effect of the Atlantic. I've never observed it first hand. Is this more true further north? Do storms churn along the coast a la Lake Erie or Lake Michigan?

One of our local weathermen just put this into perspective. Hurricane Sandy that we were all stressed out about? We have the exact same winds tonight (60 mph) that we had that night, and now you add in up to 2' of snow with near-zero visibility. Good times.

My wife is going to have a helluva lot of snow to shovel tomorrow morning. I hope she doesn't complain too much about a sore back or anything.

Neither compare to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. 236 inches a year of snow. The peak of Mt Washington is the only place east of the Rockies that gets more snow.

The lake effect is interesting in that our total annual snowfall totals are actually lower than those of, say, Syracuse in Central NY, but Buffalo gets more national publicity because every once in awhile we'll get a massive unpredictable lake effect storm that dumps a ton of snow in a day.We missed out on this one. Snowed literally all day and the roads were ####ty when driving home (enough to cancel my dinner plans) but it's clear out there right now. GL east coasters.

At least a foot in my driveway so far, high winds, and some random lightning sightings. I cant open my storm door without brushing a couple inches of snow down the front steps. The snow isn't supposed to stop until tomorrow afternoon. This is going to be waist deep snow when all is said and done. The plows arent even bothering right now - and my street is a fairly major one. Thankfully we still have power so far, but I have low expectations for tomorrow morning.

Further east from you not so pretty...we are getting hammered (in more ways than one...haha!) We had about a foot by 9PM and it let up a bit but picked back up and snowing even harder now! Just moving here from Florida is a rude awakening! At least we bought a shovel today!

Way to pay attention, guy.

It seems that here in NYC and LI the further East you are the worst it is...Here in Central Queens it's probably about 4 inches and wet so far...luckily subterranean power lines here, so power outage is uber unlikely...wind has died down significantly as well

my Jack Russell was freaked out by the amount of snow in the backyard .He was hopping all over the place trying to navigate to his favorite spot. My old black lab would've had a blast tearing through all the snow.
