Stanley Cup Playoffs Thread: Kings win 2nd Cup in 3 seasons (2 Viewers)

I'm not used to seeing the Kings look dominant on the ice like they were in the third period. Usually their offense is a lot of dump it into the zone and chase after it. This game was really different because the Kings just seemed in total control for very long stretches. Rangers that bad?

Not sure if it was the Rangers who couldn't keep up the tempo or the Kings changing their defense or just plain momentum, but was all Kings in the third. Rangers speed was definitely evident and seemed to catch the Kings off guard. Same could be said for the Rangers D. The defensemen were beaten to the outside way too many times.

If the series is played with the intensity in which game 1 was played, the NHL will be the big winner (no matter which teams pulls it out). Going 7 games with 7th game OT will be spectacular and win the NHL a ton of new fans.

Girardi should have just used all that speed and skated by everyone instead of turning it over at the blue line. didn't he know that the Kings are helpless against their speed?

Really a ####### heartbreaker... Going up 2-0, scoring a shorthanded goal, and then just falling apart and basically doing nothing for the last 2 periods of the game.

Didn't need him to blow by them, just make a decent pass. There were plenty of other Rangers who blew by the King's defense. Girardi doing the same would just be overkill.

Ken Campbell makes some good points here: http://www.thehockeynews.com/blog/kings-dont-play-well-and-still-win-game-1-of-the-stanley-cup-final-which-spells-trouble-for-rangers/

It's hardly over, but definitely concerning that the Kings were sloppy themselves last night, but the Rangers didn't capitalize and beat Quick. Eddie Olczyk brought up a good point early that the bigger, physical Kings forwards may wear the Rangers down over the course of a series. Rangers need to find a way to continue using their speed, create turnovers and FINISH scoring chances. Lots of pucks on Quick is the only way to do it.

Must not have watched much of the Kings/Hawks series. Hawks had the lead in 5 games IIRC maybe even 6 games. Hell the Hawks had a 2-0 lead in game 7 and a 1 goal lead in the 3rd and still lost. The only lead that is safe against the Kings is when the 3rd period is over.

Where was McDonagh going on the winning goal?
To lead a potential 3 on 1, worst case 3 on 2, rush. Standard play when there's a transition opportunity and pretty much the entire basis of the Rangers offense these days.

True, but McDonagh's first responsibility when the puck is that deep in the zone is to not leave his defensive partner alone with two aggressive forecheckers on him. I am sure he knows he should have been there to help Girardi out.

Sorry, this is complete MMQBing. They've been doing this all year, it's the basis of the system and it's why McD has taken off offensively. They weren't "aggressively forechecking" until Girardi lost control of the puck. In fact, Richards was calling to the bench for a change and was turning to go off the ice before he saw Girardi #### up which got him back into the zone where he intercepted the pass Girardi made from his knees.

I say with 100% confidence that the Rangers wouldn't have even been playing last night if the initial inclination for McDonagh was to sit back when he sees a ####load of open ice in front of him, Zucc heading up ice, and Brassard having a ton of space to himself on the other side of the red line.

Yeah, that's a tough call watching the replay again, since Williams was McDonagh's man on that side of the ice. Richards was calling for the line change, but he also hadn't turned toward the bench yet and there still were two other Kings deep in the zone with only Girardi. Definitely a "gamble" that backfired.

He's a speed demon.
So Hagelin has a shorthanded break with a minute left and you guys are still going to push this meme?

Kings are better. Everyone knows. Team speed is a factor. Nobody should deny it.

are you arguing the Rangers are faster than the Sharks, Ducks, and Hawks were? If not, why should their speed be a significant factor in this series?

there was nobody near Hagelin on that break, was there? Rangers have some guys with wheels but so does every team.

Yeah, they look faster. I watched a decent deal of all those series, thought it was the best hockey, but raw speed is different.

I think all pro hockey guys are fast. As heck. I also think hockey speed is overrated. Get it. But when the NHL Network, color commentators, and other writers marvel at Hagelin, Kreider, and others, it's worth listening to, and not making a meme about. Especially when they're breaking your butt down for breakaway after breakaway and Williams is quoted as saying that they were playing in "gumboots" for the first two periods.

Simple as that. Your mileage may vary.

Demonic I tell you.

Nash futures going through the roof at this point.

where did all that speed go in the 3rd period when the Rangers were outshot like 20-2 in a tie game? weren't they well rested?

They got outclassed in the third, but they kind of outclassed the Kings in the first two. So which counts? It also showed up on Hagelin's breakaway with a minute left. Kings are better, IMO. Appreciably. I picked 'em, and picked them last series, too.

I'm not arguing for the Rangers. I just think dismissing a team and its strengths is dangerous.

I think team speed can be a factor in a series, but the Rangers are rolling 4 lines and I don't think half of them have much speed at all. So, saying the team is fast because of 2 or 3 players seems weird to me.

When you can forecheck and dominate the puck as well as the Kings can, it also won't matter too much. Obviously the Rangers need to counter attack and generate odd man rushes to stay in this series. That worked for them early on last night as the Kings were pretty sloppy to start the game, but once they got going it looked like a complete mismatch except for Lundqvist.

I win more money if the Rangers win, but I don't think they have much of a chance unfortunately.

Boo. You need Nash if the Rangers have any hope in this series.

Don't know if you missed it, but my "bet" was free.

Nope. Didn't miss it. That's how funny it is. Free is the best price, though, huh?

Half is quite a bit, though, isn't it? I don't wanna push too much, man. Seriously. My complaint was more with the self-assuredness and dismissiveness of the meme when many other people are seeing it differently.

But half seems like a lot. Especially when Vigneault tightens up his lines, which he'll have to do.

Kings still win, IMO. Best of luck to everyone and their future bets.

it would help if you even understood what we were ripping.

Rangers TOI leaders in the playoffs among forwards:

St Louis

Stepan

Nash

Richards

Zuccarello

Hagelin

Kreider

Pouliot

Brassard

Boyle

Moore

everybody else gets less than 10 minutes/game

Zuccarello, Hagelin, and Kreider get 5th, 6th, and 7th most minutes. Marty can fly but he's also 39yo.

Kings top forwards in terms of ice time:

Kopitar

Carter

Gaborik

Stoll

Brown

Williams

Richards

King

Toffoli

Lewis

Pearson

I don't think guys like Kopitar, Carter, Gaborik, Stoll, M.Richards are slow.

When the Kings were going up and down nwith Chicago, they looked pretty fast to me. They just don't normally play a style that requires them to outskate everybody because they usually have the puck for long stretches of time.
