Stanton Placed on IR (1 Viewer)

The Lions have placed rookie QB Drew Stanton on IR. He would miss most of camp with his injured knee and not be able to get a good grasp of the offense without camp. I guess this bumps Kitna a bit as he should start all season!

Stanton To IR

Lions put rookie QB Stanton on IR

NFL.com wire reports

ALLEN PARK, Mich. (Aug. 3, 2007) -- The Detroit Lions placed rookie quarterback Drew Stanton on injured reserve, ending his season to open up a roster spot for wide receiver Calvin Johnson, the second overall pick in April's draft.

The former Michigan State quarterback injured his knee during the first week of camp and underwent arthroscopic surgery July 31. The second-round pick was expected to miss all of training camp, meaning he wouldn't get enough practice time to learn Mike Martz's difficult offensive scheme.

"We didn't know exactly when he would be healthy enough to play, and it is hard to keep an injured guy on the roster when you need all the depth you can get," Lions coach Rod Marinelli said. "This way, we can focus on rehabbing his knee and working with him in the classroom."

Stanton wasn't going to play this year anyway, and AB had this covered days ago in the Lions Training Camp thread which is probably still on the front page . . .

The only thing I don't like about this news is that for your standard knuckleheads in some of my $ leagues there was a sentiment that Stanton might be a threat this year. This hurts my ability to nab Kitna late.

Bump Kitna? We have our clubhouse leader for dumbest thread of the season!!! :excited:
Is Kitna #1 on your list? Not have any concerns of a rookie they drafted possibly playing in December? If you're not contributing to a thread, you're probably dialing up the tool factor. Dial back.Oh, and by the way - bump up JT O'Sullivan as well.

Shouldn't that apply to original posts in a thread too?

Stanton was no threat to unset Kitna this year IMO. Kitna's rank should not change because of this injury.
And this is my beef with drafting him in the first place. How does a team that won 3 games last season spend a high second round pick on a project?
Maybe because they're more concerned with having a replacement at QB in two years when they actually have a chance to be good than they are with having someone who can help this year's team win five games instead of four.

It's smart drafting, IMO. Too many bad teams spend all of their time trying desperately to plug the leaks, but for every leak they plug, another opens up. The smarter way is to just scrap the entire mess and start over from scratch. If you're a terrible team, and you're consistently building based on what will make you the biggest threat THIS SEASON, you're going to be a consistently terrible team- when you're that bad, you need to draft best player available and understand that it might be 2-3 years before you're truly competitive.Really, the only time anyone should be drafting guys based solely on how much they can contribute immediately is if that team is poised for a superbowl run... and even then, I'd argue against it. Just look at Denver with Jay Cutler. Denver was coming off of a 13-3 season where they played at home in the AFCCG and they wound up drafting their QB-of-the-future when their QB-of-the-present was coming off of a string of three straight very good seasons. Lots of people called it a wasted pick, a real head-scratcher for a team that was a big-time contender and among the elite of the AFC. And here we are 12 months later, and that draft pick is looking like a stroke of genius- Plummer imploded and retired, and now Denver's got a super-talented QB with some experience in place. Draft picks like that are the reason why Denver's always in contention.
