I predict it will have the biggest box office of the week.
Seriously, my wife was watching GMA, and they were talking about whether it will crack the "fabled" $3 billion threshold.
I knew merchandising was important, I hadn't quite realized how skewed the theatrical film/home video to merchandising take was in some cases. Pixar's Cars did less than a billion, but about $8 billion on toys and the like (clothes, bedding, etc., etc., etc.). Toy Story did about a billion, but $10 billion in merchandising. I looked it up and saw estimates that Star Wars has collectively moved $20+ billion in merchandising (seems low based on Toy Story and other Pixar figures, if they are accurate?), and as much as $5 billion is expected in the first year alone for the latest installment.
It is hard to compare older movies box office records due to inflation (something like the top 50 non-inflation adjusted are all within the past few decades - though when adjusted, Gone With The Wind would be high on the list?), other factors like the growth of foreign markets, etc. No idea about the ratio of screenings, but if Star Wars has a lot in the more lucrative 3D format and on IMAX-type screens, that obviously could boost the final tally EVEN FURTHER into the stratosphere.
