Ep III wasn't all that bad. It kind of gets grouped into the overall ####tiness of the prequel trilogy as a whole, but as its own entity, it was fairly decent.

The retcon argument for the Endor defeat is that the emperor provided a mental edge to his forces through is powerful dark side mental control (I know reaching here). His focus was solely on the fight between Skywalkers and it left his incompetent draftee forces to fend for themselves. Most of them having never faced a hard battle like the clone troopers did. Once the emperor died, everything fell apart.

Again it doesn't excuse teddy bears vs empire.

The main problem with the Ewoks besides their weaponry was that they were so slow and bumbling. They looked just as out of their element in the forest as the stormtroopers did. If they had shown superior speed, agility, tree climbing etc.. then the ambush would have been more believable.

But for me it has huge nostalgia so I love it, ewoks and all. It's one of my earliest movie theater memories, sitting in a row with my buds counting the minutes until the movie starts... for a 9 year old, it was awesome. The 3 battle scenes going at once, the reveal of Luke and Leia being siblings (and not putting remembering that they kissed in earlier films), Vader saving Luke....

Looking back, sure the Ewoks being a main reason for the empire losing makes no sense, but overall its still fun.

I think we are talking about two different things. Character vs group.

Chewy is a character that is greatly loved.

The wookies as a whole in episode 3 are not talked about in that way by fans in my experience.

I think some people like Wicket as a general character but did not like the Ewoks as a group.

In the end, I think what killed the prequels was the complexity of them. Whether the complexity made sense (it didn't) or not was irrelevant. The original movies were so simple.

A New Hope is a pretty basic storyline. Big bad Empire with huge weapon destroys planet and is about to completely take over the universe thanks to their evil bad guy in a dark mask with the Force and a great voice. Underdogs steal plans, young whiny kid learns the force and grabs some great characters and destroys the huge weapon by exploiting the one flaw it has. (as an aside, the Amidala/Anakin love scenes are horrible in Episode 2, but the whining Luke scenes at the start of Episode 4 are easily just as bad. I can hardly watch Luke at the start of Episode 4, he's super annoying and over-the-top.)

So hopefully the new storylines are not complex. They are easy, simple stories of good vs bad, with great characters, in a universe that we all love. That's all we need. I'm not looking for political drama and intrigue here. No need to blow us away with an amazing plot. Give me a great bad guy, put our heros in extreme danger, and then watch as they use the force and save the day. That's all we need.

I liked the political drama. It set up the movies as to how the Empire came about.

If a 7'5" Wookie hit a stormtrooper in the head with a club (or a rock) does anyone doubt the stormtrooper would die? If 1,000 Wookies came charging out of the forest screaming their heads off I am pretty sure most stormtroopers would die from ####ing their pants out of fear.

The principle problem with Ewoks is that they formed the backbone of the land forces that defeated the Empire, which is an entirely laughable premise. Without the forgiving sepia toned lens of nostalgia they are every bit as ridiculous as Jar Jar Binks and the Gungans.

I saw E1 in a theatre and people cheered, there was a standing ovation!

In that moment the love of star wars surrounded us like the force! later being critical became popular.

I hope people let their guards down and let the love surround them and just embrace this new movie.

They cheered because they love Star Wars. I think one reason people became more critical over time is that you just can't re-watch those movies. I get no enjoyment out of re-watching I and II. Too many plotlines that I find extremely boring, too much un-needed complexity, and not enough "Star Wars". The Originals had a bad guy and a good guy. The prequels didn't really have a bad guy, as the Emperor was in the background the whole time, Anakin was still good until the very end of III, and Darth maul, as good as he was, died in Episode I and was heavily under-used.

Had they cut out all the political drama, had Darth Maul in all 3 prequels (only to be killed by Anakin in E3), and cut out some of the cheesy drama, the prequels would have been much better.

I liked the political drama. It set up the movies as to how the Empire came about.

Agreed. Thought that was the best part of the first two prequels.

Wookies are massive, use lasers and spaceships. Despite the limitations in practical special effects in 1979 when Wookies were first introduced they still came across as plausible bad ###es.

Ewoks OTOH come off as better suited to sell me fabric softener.

Ewoks are like midget Wookies. Seems like you may have a problem with midgets.

The preferred nomenclature is Little Furry People, Sheik.

I don't think there is anymore love for the Wookies than the Ewoks.For most people the Wookie battle in 3 was slightly more believable because of the weapons and the physical size of the Wookies.

Of memory serves, Lucas originally intended for the Endor battle to be with Wookies instead of the Ewoks.

I respectfully disagree. I hear a lot of hate about the Ewoks. I've never heard anything about Chewy. In fact, people love Chewy.

That's because Ewoks won't rip your arms out of their sockets if they lose.
