Better Things

Pamela Adlon's new FX series is great. Directed by Louis C.K. (who also wrote an episode), it should appeal to Louie fans. Fantastic.
Good to hear, I just set it to record last night after seeing her on Kimmel. Forgot the show was coming out and didn't see any advertising for it.

Finished the first season of "Stranger Things".  Meh.  Not sure if I will watch season 2 or not.  Is there supposed to be a season 2?

I'm through 4 episodes of Luke Cage and it looks like a winner so far.  Ep 4 was his backstory and how he got his powers.

Just saw New Episodes of the Detectorists pop up.  :giggity:

I watched JJ first, not needed to watch Luke.

Caught the first ep of Luke and I enjoyed it.

Won't binge fast, but will work it in over the fall season

for those that have watched/are watching Luke Cage...did you watch Jessica Jones first?
I did watch JJ first.  It is an excellent show.  So far the Luke Cage story is before he meets JJ.  You can watch Luke Cage easily without having seen JJ.

i saw that too. I thought it was a very fine comedy in that most English way of developing gentle humor.

So it's a completely stand alone series? No knowledge of other characters are needed?

No prior knowledge needed.  I'm only 4 episodes in, but I don't imagine that changing much based on the timeline.
Turns out I was wrong.  I thought Luke Cage takes place prior to Jessica Jones, but it is in fact after.  I still haven't seen anything that requires any prior knowledge.

9/10 Blue Ruin: Tension filled nail biter that grabs the cojones and twists good and hard. Can't recommend this enough. Also, keep an eye out for a Brady Bunch alum cameo.

Amanda Knox - Watched this last night. I was a little disappointed. It was ok but I thought it was going to be a lot better. For one thing, its way too short. It could have easily been double what it was. They kind of just flew by important details.

On a related note, how do you make a spoiler tag?

There's no need to watch Jessica Jones first but aren't they planning to bring them all together in a future series?

My wife only watches movies with a story and a comedic tint.  She likes humor, but not dumb ### humor.  Think ...  As Good as it Gets, Almost Famous, Wedding Crashers, Jerry McGuire, Somethings Gotta Give.  No time to watch series.

Any movies on Netfix in the last 2 years that FBG might suggest?

no nekkid?

spoiler tag = (spoiler), but replace the parentheses with [ ] and then type what you want. no need to end it with closing spoiler.

One thing that does come out is that the prosecutor was not impressive. He jumped to conclusions on every possible little piece of evidence. I.e., "Why else would she be kissing her boyfriend unless she was guilty?" "Only a woman puts a blanket over a dead body. A man would never do that." "The break-in was to cover up for an inside job - there can be no other explanation."

Seemed very unprofessional.

And when you combine that with the ####ed up DNA evidence? Its my opinion that Foxy Knoxy was not involved in the murder.

yes, I believe it includes Daredevil too.  The Defenders was their team comic.

Just looked up the Defenders Netflix project.  There is still one more hero to introduce then the Defenders series. Looks like you see them all before Defenders.

White Helmets documentary by Netflix is well worth the 35 minutes or so.  Very powerful stuff and a window into Syrian war that is barely covered here in the US.

Dunno if its been mentioned but the wife and I have been watching a Spanish series called Gran Hotel. It's in spanish with english subtitles. The best way I can describe it is that it's like Downton Abbey, but imagine if interesting things and plotlines actually occured on Downton Abbey.

It takes place in a Spanish resort hotel in the early 1900s and like Downton Abbey, the plot primarily involves the upper class hotel owners and the lower class hotel maids and waiters. It has everything from serial killers to people with secret identities to family betrayals, and an Hercules Poirot inspired investigator trying to figure it all out.

Seasons 1 and 2 are on Netflix and season 3 is available "elsewhere" to be added to netflix later this year. We're nearing the end of season 3 and the story is pretty epic.
I've been watching this the past few weeks. Plot lines can be a little farfetched, but all in all I like it. Best of all, there are some ridiculously beautiful ladies in this show.

Alicia (Amaia Salamanca): In character; Real life 1, 2, 3

Maite(Megan Montaner): In character; Real life 1, 2, 3 ... Would commit unspeakable crimes just to please her.

Sofia (Luz Valdenbro): In Character; Real life 1, 2, 3

Agatha (Carolina Lapausa): In character; Real life 1, 2, 3 ... Role lasted only one episode, which was a major disppointment.

I haven't watched it, but the Fundamentals of Caring, maybe.  Netfix-produced movie that came out a month or 2 ago.

Man on fire:  Pretty good Denzel as an ex CIA revenger flick. With an underused Christopher Walken and Mickey Rourke and some over used film sfx   6/10

the Grinder is full of legit laughs (after a few drinks fersure). Love it so far.
The Rob Lowe show? I liked it and wish they would have kept it going a little longer. Fred Savage was really good in at as was most of the cast. Even the kids were good which is rare on most sitcoms, imo.

The Batman cartoon is pretty good.  Art style and animation is reminscent of the Spawn animated series that was on HBO forever ago.  It's fairly gritty for a Saturday morning cartoon type deal.  Yes I'm 12

My 6 yo son likes that one. He's also a fan of the very angsty "Young Justice" and some of the Transformers. You're in good company.

Eagle Eye- Pretty good popcorn flick with Shia Lebouf, Billy Bob (how was this guy married to Angelina Jolie again?) and a fetching Michelle Monaghan in a kinda 2001 Space Odyssey meets Enemy of the State as per Michael Bay amalgamation. Plenty of action, enough plot to keep it from being too Transformersy and plot holes big enough to fly a Reaper through, just so you don't think they were trying too hard to rake it all too seriously. 7/10

Love that movie
I probably would have liked it more if I hadn't seen any number of the gazillion Revenger flicks that this probably predates. Denzel seldom disappoints and he doesn't here. Just seemed odd that Walken and Rourke (not an especially huge fan of either)  were so underused. Like maybe there was more of each that didn't make it through the editing process.

Really liking the latest season of Wentworth... The mind games from Ferguson are enough to tick you off which is sign of good writing and acting. Bea's battle within herself and whether to be Top dog or not has been interesting and bringing Frankie into the mix to clear her head was fun to watch. Looking forward to the final 3 episodes.

KOCH

The documentary on former NYC Mayor Ed Koch.  A little behind the scenes look at his career and life. I'm not sure how long this has been available on NF but I just happened to see it listed.  I need to watch it again since I watched it in bed as I was falling asleep in bed last night.  Dozed through the middle.

Some of the clips of him interacting with the public remind me of Anthony Weiner before there was an Anthony Weiner.

I hadn't remembered his Gubernatorial campaign against Mario Cuomo and how much they despised one another.  Good stuff!

Great old footage!  Some of the urban cinematography is really great.
