Streaming or currently airing TV shows (AKA Netflix thread) (6 Viewers)

Compulsion is a really good murder/crime movie from 59 that I just streamed on Netflix. It's the story of 2 wealthy college grad students who plot the perfect murder, just for fun. However, as they tend to, things unravel. Lots of great performance, including Dean Stockwell and Orson Welles. It's a fictionalized version of the famous Leopold and Loeb case.

Second episode of The Travelers down.  Good to very good so far.
I'm at ep 6 and I'm still digging it.  As with all time travel stories, a bit of suspension of disbelief is required.

I think they're boxing themselves in plotwise, so it'll be interesting to see if they can wrestle free.

Looking to binge watch some series after I finally finish narcos. What order should I watch these?

Sens8

Black mirror

Peaky blinders

Haven't seen Sens8 but Peaky Blinders has to be first.

I wouldn't recommend binging Black Mirror. Each episode is different and it's good to have a little time between each, imo.

Watched #3 this am and it was solid.  I'm liking the story and characters very much but I can see what you're getting at with the "boxed in" possibility.  This seems to me to be the type of series that never really has a "final" conclusion.

Watched s2 ep1 of Sens8 last night. I'll continue, but that one might have made me lose interest. Felt more annoyed than interested in the proceedings, especially since the Indian actress appears to be the lone holdout to nudity in the cast.

Finished the OA, liked it very much.  Didn't mind the ending at all.

4/5 stars.
I'm about 4 episodes into this. I'm liking it a lot. Usually, I'm not into the slow burn dramas but I'm emotionally invested in several characters already.

I needed imdb to remember that Prairie's dad is Hershel.

A few weeks ago we saw an extremely rare thing for Netflix - a new movie that also did well on the theaters - when they added Captain America: Civil War to instant.  This is like a once a year kind of addition.

Starz had the Marvel movies on lockdown. It is encouraging to see Netflix going after some better movies. T

With their original content coming fast and furious, they may be out-HBOing HBO

I thought "Fauda" was excellent. I tried English dub but preferred Hebrew/Arabic with English subs. Check it out. 8.4/10 on IMDB.
3 episodes in and I'm enjoying it so far. However, some scenes (especially ones in the Israeli Intelligence HQ control room or some of the 007 tech gadget scenes) are pretty corny. They make me feel like I'm watching a Wednesday night show on CBS that might parents would like. Hopefully that doesn't continue much more through the rest of the season. The rest has been really good.

ETA: The short episodes (30-40 minutes) are kind of nice.

I'm closer to your opinion on Spectral than 4/5 but I wouldn't call it dog food. It was a good watch 2.5/5 for me.

Just started this, on episode 5. Liking it so far.
4/5 is probably a little too high.  Let's call it 3.5/5 and then you're closer to me and Floppo is proven wrong...again.

here to recommend "sensitive skin" on Netflix. it's an adaptation from a BBC show to Canada but it's really well done. Kim Cattrall much to my surprise is really very good in this comic drama. older, affluent couple living in Toronto dealing with mid-life and aging. it's a well written and produced gem that's only 6 episodes in S1. don mckellar- who I remember from Atom Egoyan films like Exotica - is really just superb in this.

Season 2 is now on Netflix. The gf and I started it last night. Again, it's just a really thoughtful, funny show. At 30 minutes an episode, it is a nice change of pace while offering better than sitcom quality content.

we'll have to check this out- both for the brevity and the content.

also- Exotica is one of my all time favorite films, and seems pretty underrated. Egoyan seems to have lost the course a bit, but he had an amazing run there with this, Sweet Hereafter and the Adjuster. I felt like Felecia's Journey is the tipping point- I liked a lot about it, but felt like it just missed the mark overall. the films since then feel increasingly flawed- even if he maintains a high standard for visuals and tone. Last one of his I saw was the Captive... an almost, like most of those since Felecia's.

Finished "Travelers" S1, and it's pretty good.  Made me look forward to Season 2
I just finished it as well.  One scene that really drove me nuts though:

When they were trying to turn the key to activate the x-ray beam to shoot the asteroid and the military guy was trying to stop them, several things bothered me.  First of all, the military guy had no idea what the key did, yet he was willing to kill everyone, including his own men to stop it from being turned.  Second of all, why oh why did the director just send one traveler at a time to get killed instead of sending multiple or simply just taking over the head guy first.  The whole scene drove me nuts and I'm not normally a stickler for this kind of thing.

I remember that scene.  I remember thinking: "why don't they just send someone back to take the place of the leader, rather than every single one of his henchmen." But I give it a pass as they were obviously just going for more tension.

That being said, I loved this show.  I kinda hate that it ended on a cliffhanger, but whatever, it sucked me (and my kids) in.  Can't wait for next season.

Unfortunately I think that scene is going to play a big role in S2

You didn't see the key turned on screen, you just saw an explosion in the distance.

They just signed a 3 year contract with Marvel so expect the same thing going forward with Marvel movies.

Awesome.  That is one thing I've really been annoyed about with Netflix is the lack of the Avengers movies.  I'm a huge Marvel cinematic universe fan.

I might have mentioned this before but I share a deep affection with you for Exotica. It was one of those rare films that I had me guessing throughout. At the time I saw it in the theater, I was working in a video store and saw hundreds of films. I was almost numb to the medium at that point and "Exotica" was just full of surprises in the best sense. Egoyan's less interesting now, for sure, and I'm still a fan.

a gb rented it one night in gradschool, I'm sure thinking it was going to be softcore porn. he fell asleep almost immediately, but I was enraptured. (even though, tbh- I kept waiting for the naughty bits). had absolutely no idea where it was going. loved it.

I remember the VHS box for it actually. people thought it was porn-y and get it because they were too ashamed to visit our porn selection (in the back of the video store).

lol- I remember it too- catholic school girl outfit, right? and you described my pal to a T.

Just got done watching "Nobel."  Really liked it.  It's in Norwegian and has subtitles (something I didn't realize when I dl'd it before my flight), but it worked out well since I left my good headphones at home and only had crappy old iPhone headphones in my bag.

The new One day at a time is really good.  Just watched the first two episodes. I Imagine some people won't like it.  A lot of politics and religion discussion.

Also been watching Peep show.  It's solid Brit comedy that's got 8 seasons.  I'm on season 3.  Netflix is removing it in a few weeks.

I know a few people liked this, there's a second season out now but the show has been renamed "Lovesick". This is mostly a PSA in case others like me didn't realize it's the same show.
Excellent series.  I highly recommend.

I also liked the original name. :kicksrock:

One of the trailers at the bottom of the episode list does a funny bit on the name change.
