i'm feeling the exact opposite of late

fiction stories are "good guy wins, bad guy loses, lots of car crashes" by and large or "nerd wins over the hot girl". feels like there are very, very few twists on the age old storylines that are remotely interesting anymore.

That's why I watch so few American series any more --- they're usually too familiar and too predictable.
You might want to take a look at MHz Choice, which is a streaming service of films (subtitled) from other countries, mostly Europe. It costs about $8/month as either a standalone or as an add-on to Prime Video. I've watched numerous series from there and I've barely gotten out of Germany there. In general the shows I've seen are less predictable and more interesting. I'll try to review some of them in upcoming weeks. Ones I remember off the top of my head:
Tatort (many episodes over many years)
Babylon Berlin (currently rewatching S 1-3 and they have season 4).
Weissensee Saga

Exactly.. it was a totally different way of establishing narrative structure than I'm used to seeing. Brilliant way of carrying that crescendo of a s2 last ep forward. I absolutely loved it.

A lot of my criticisms of KOTFM are the same as my criticisms of The Irishman, so if you like that movie, maybe you like this one more than I did. I think there's a pretty good 90-120 minute movie in there someplace. But Scorsese isn't going to edit himself, and apparently streaming services don't have the muscle to impose an editor on him. KOTFM had several subplots that went absolutely nowhere and could have been easily cut, and that would have made the movie more watchable. As it is, there is nowhere near enough story here to justify a 3 1/2 hour runtime. I spent huge swaths of the film just observing the background scenery and wondering how it accurately it depicts early-20th century Oklahoma.

Just watched it this past weekend. It was way, way too long. Your summary is spot on. Lot's of nothing going on. Either make it into a series and go into some of those stories or cut out a bunch and get to under 2 hours. This was like the worst of all choices.

I could be confused too, the way the episode worked with almost all flashbacks.

Carms brother Mikey died. that was touched on in the ep with richie knocking, etc. and a huge part of the show for 2 seasons. ...right? We watched the same show? pretty sure Marcus's mom was touched on too (texts?). Afaik, those are the main deaths in the show.

Imo too many people are on their phones during these shows lmao. This isn’t even a Stranger Things type show that comes out every 5 years they do a new season each summer.

i loved black sails but I was also really into pirates as a kid and loved me some treasure island
