Streaming or currently airing TV shows (AKA Netflix thread) (12 Viewers)

My general rule is if it’s on network TV (ABC NBC FOX CBS) it’s probably crap.  They’ll put out the occasional decent comedy but I can’t think of the last hour long network drama / sci-fi whatever that was any good
Truth.  Network shows are really unwatchable now.  They barely produce shows it seems anyway.  Just singing and talent competitions.  Or so it appears.

Setting aside the usual unrealistic dialogue, most network dramas have the same editing, camera angles and music to almost all of them. It's so generic and obvious as soon as it starts. The last one I watched was the original CSI. I haven't tried the new one.

eta: actually I watched the first season of The Following, with Kevin Bacon.

I'm kind of looking forward to this new Cleaning Lady show coming on Fox. I'm sure you are right and it will stink, but the premise has me looking forward to it.
there's a sitcom called Ghosts... somewhere on the networks... that isn't bad.

Watch five minutes of 9-1-1

Top 10 rated shows inclusive of football and reality.

Top 3 in drama.

And you'll realize how dumb and easily entertained most Americans are.

But all the explosions and earthquakes and random events that happen are so amazing!  /s

This.

My wife tried telling me Blue Bloods was good.  I paused, thought about my life choices for a few seconds, and gave her (what must have been) a "get the #### out of here" look.  She replied, "Well...it's okay.  Not as bad as you probably think at least."

At that moment I realized why the only shows we've watched together in the last few years were Only Murders In the Building and Cobra Kai.  Blue Bloods? 🙄

Here comes a slight defense -

As I get older, I have started to finally sort of understand the attraction of CBS shows. Working all day, dealing with whatever obstacles and crap comes up in a normal day - sometimes I just want to sit on the couch and not think.

So I'll put on an episode of FBI: Most Wanted and just half watch while shutting my brain off. Its a very simple premise - you have good guys chasing bad guys and the good guys catch them by the end of each episode. Everyone goes home happy (except for the people the bad guys killed).

So yes - network shows are definitely mindless and dumb. But sometimes that's kind of nice. At least to me.

The 5 minutes I watched was a firetruck racing down the runway to save a guy hanging from a rope from an airplane as it raced past overhead.   The lack of understanding of the laws of physics puts to shame the van flip in the Walking Dead.

But why do you need laws of physics in mindless TV?  And it's sometimes fun poking holes in the physics, story lines, etc with the people watching with you.   I mean Armageddon wasn't based in laws in physics but it was entertaining.

   Because I'm a left brained engineering physicist?

That Manifest show, first episode, the plane has turbulence and a guy (gal?) drops her laptop and breaks the screen.  She's so upset that she just lost all her work that was stored on her laptop.  I mean it's like they are insulting my intelligence on purpose.  The exact opposite of entertainment.

The best (Most ridiculous) part of network shows are the goodguy hackers.

"I need you to hack into this"
"But it's ENCRYPTED! It'll take DAYS!"
"Wait a minute, try this"
*types in nickname of grandmother's pet goldfish*
"I'm in!"
"Ok, recover those files"
"Which files?"
"I don't know, you're the expert"
*recovers files*
"Hey, look at this! He's headed for that old orphanage"
"Pull up their surveillance cams"
"They don't have any"
"Pull up the surveillance cams of the the AutoZone next door"
"There he is now!"
"Let's roll!"

Equally far fetched is bringing out the blueprints that are 100% accurate to it's current configuration and easily found by some random law enforcement agency.

Oh my gosh.  Some friends recommended Lucifer.

My two-word review, absolute crap.

They said that they had watched Breaking Bad up to the episode the tub broke through the ceiling, which was very early.  Maybe two or three episodes in.  I choked down two and a half episodes of Lucifer.  Just a steaming pile of unadorned warm dog####.  Don't waste a second.

Why would you ever take a recommendation from someone that intentionally didn't finish Breaking Bad?  This one's on you, bro.

"Switch to 11th floor cams."
"Something's jamming them!"
"Well figure it out! We're going in!"

I liked the first few seasons of Lucifer.  You can't look at it as must see, but as mindless fluff it wasn't bad.

Really?  I have not seen either, but the reviews seem to say the opposite?
Yeah. Wheel of Time was pretty boring for me. I'm not always big into fantasy shows, though, so take my thoughts on this with a grain of salt. I do like LOTR and Game of Thrones and Witcher has a similar feel to both of those, IMO.

Started Mayor of Kingstown.

Absolutely loving it. Was not expecting this quality and already flew through 4 episodes.
Does it get better?  First episode was pretty good, thought the 2nd was kinda boring

Started season 1 on Saturday. Liking it so far but was super confused until we figured out that each main character (Yennefer,Ciri,Witcher) was in a different timeline.
Watching The Witcher now.  I was confused at first too.  Finishing up S1. ep. 8 now.  Other than the time disparity I'm really enjoying it.  I knew I saw the male lead before based on his voice.  He played Superman in one of the Superman movies.

I just wrapped S2.. an inside look piece popped on immediately after and showed him without the wig- I had absolutely no idea it was this guy until I saw him wigless.

I just started The Witcher as well. I'm at 1.5 and know literally nothing about this story at all.

It took me until last night and several vodkas to finally realize that there are several different timelines going on.  Once that clicked,  I kinda understood (I think) what is roughly going on.

Cavill is really good,  the queen is a great character and thank God they fixed Yennifer because I would watch her read a book..... and the character is fun too.

This is infinitely better than Wheel of Time in every aspect.

I'm through episode 7 of Station Eleven.

I like it, but it's definitely a slow burn. The back and forth from pre- and post-pandemic is done very well.

I do find myself wanting to see more of the immediate fall-out of when the poop hits the fan. That would be very interesting.

I hope it doesn't turn into some version of Lost, though.

And it does make me more than a little freaked out about our current situation in real life.

I'm on episode 8 right now if that gives you any idea.

Yes, one of the best shows I've seen in a while.
i could only lead your horses to water, i even tried forcing some to drink. glad you’re enjoying it as much as me, although the 9th was kind of a let down after the 8th episode

Literally watching it right now and this 9th episode is awful. Ruining the season and show.

fwiw, the reviews here in the FFA have been uniformly in favor of Witcher over Wheel of Time.

Alot of the bad reviews of the Witcher are coming from butt hurt book readers or gamers because the show isn't 100% like the books or game.

and tbf- I think the worst reviews of Wheel in here are from the book readers saying the same thing. I liked Wheel fine- not loved- but do think it's not as good as Witcher from a TV standpoint.

I haven't read any of those reviews.  But I've read all the books (and played all the games, but the show isn't based on them) and have had 0 problem with how they've handled the source material.

I'm enjoying.  Honestly I try just about any recommendations as there aren't enough good shows out currently.

I agree it's really good.  I thought, wow, this is intense after ep3 last night.  BUT, after thinking about it some more, if I had any criticism it's that it's a little over the top.  No way you get everyone on board with every police organization working in concert like that without leaks to feds etc.   And (in ep3) if Mike wanted to avoid crackhead causing the town to owe every crime group so bad he could have just taken care of it himself.  In fact, that's what I thought he was going to do when he got the tire iron out of the trunk.  Instead he just hits him and then tells him to go turn himself in?
