Streaming or currently airing TV shows (AKA Netflix thread) (3 Viewers)

The Battery (Tubi) - super low budget zombie movie (I think I read something about the creator borrowing $500 from 8 buddies and making the movie for $4000 or something).  It's a couple of minor league baseball players who weren't really best friends who are stuck together on the move. There's a scene in the car that is sad and hilarious - the movie is worth it for that alone.  The contrast between the two guys and how they're handling things is the highlight of this movie.

3 episodes into Station Eleven and its been a real drag so far. Does it get better? It's almost like they are trying to make it weird but not interesting. Should I continue?

At least the final episode was better. Not crazy about where they took the plot last episode, but it wrapped up nicely.

Highly recommend giving Mayor of Kingstown a watch (Paramount+)
i liked it overall but hate that paramount got me watching seal team. i’m like an opioid addict in san fran, hooked on the damn show hardcore

Yellowjackets - good horror show

the Witcher - Henry cavill is easy on the eyes

pen15 - wanna relive awkward middle school moments? Had its moments but worth a watch

Started the F1 show on Netflix, 4 years late.  I'm a sucker for any good sports doc.  My wife and high-school-aged son loved Sunderland, which helped me talk them into giving this one a shot.  2 episodes in, it's a winner. Use CC, though there is lots of language if that is an issue, but's a winner for us.

The Mutant Chronicles (Amazon)… I’m really surprised I had never heard of this movie.  Ron Perlman is the biggest name, but it was a decent cast all around. It’s like a Dirty Dozen zombie movie where they have a mission to go destroy the hive.  The zombies are weird, though, and conversion requires them dragging a person back to the hive.  The movie was visually striking - it had the look of 300 but with steampunk stuff set in the future, and the visuals alone were worth watching the movie for.
Thanks for the recommendation. Just watched it and liked it a lot

Didn’t we just have the same thing in Solo though?  And in the Madelorian when he killed the sand worm?  Seems like well worn territory.

Look I’m on board for Boba Fett but it’s pretty lazy so far and Boba is way way too altruistic for my liking. He’s a bad guy! Be bad please.
For a guy that hung out inside a space worm for quite some time, he certainly emerged with the whitest damn teeth I've seen this side of a Crest commercial.

On the most recently dropped episode of Beforeigners, former Viking king Olaf's witch taught him how to do lines.

Also, "seatbelts are for sissies."

If it's not grabbing you yet, not sure it'll grab you. I haven't caught the finale, but my favorite episodes are in the middle...but the overall vibe doesn't really change, if that's whats bugging you. Did you like The Leftovers?

We're watching a show on...Peacock?... about the Olympic ice skating pairs scandal from Salt Lake- Canucks and Ruskies. Kinda interesting so far 2 eps in while everything gets set up. Looks like the scandal is about to happen next episode...it's released weekly.

Eta...I think it's called Meddling

Loved the Leftovers. Hated this so far. Definitely didn't grab me. Tried to be too artsy. Read a series recap so too late and it sounds interesting but I have a feeling I would've felt the same way. Thanks

I just grabbed HBO Max for the first time. I’ve got about 20 movies and The Pacific on my list, planning to get started tonight 🙂

I think I’ll finally watch the Studio Ghibli movies (Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, Totoro, etc.)

ETA: starting a tour through the services - Paramount+ next month, Stars after, Hulu, then Showtime.

Wife and son and I started the F1 doc on Netflix last night.  Two episodes in, and they are both even more in than I am.  We all loved the Sunderland soccer doc and this is in a similar vein.  Also apparently the folks behind the F1 show are the ones doing a PGA tour show along the same lines.  Can't wait for that.

Is this on Netflix as well? What is the name of it if you recall?

I’ve been away from this thread for a couple of years. I need to catch up on some good TV.
From what I’ve read recently, Dopesick is a good place to start?

Perhaps a few recommendations that are on the level of Dopesick that I can start binge watching? Perhaps dating back as far as 2019 - 2022? TY
i'll add:

Ozark definitely

Afterlife, a Ricky Gervais bittersweet comedy series

The Kominsky Method,  much better than i expected

Russian Doll,  it's really weird, i liked it a lot, well reviewed though not in here, you should know after one episode

Messiah (or The Messiah) liked it but i'm into messiahs.  political, spiritual, complex mystery.  again one episode should tell you.

all on netflix

Maybe, but I have a very marginal interest, my son cares not at all about English soccer, and my wife hates sports.  But we all three loved Sunderland.
*ALERTS* the california messi is sadly and grossly underrepresented in this.

but it's an interesting show, that gets into back office player purchases and dealing with promotion/relegation.

I would say probably don’t continue with it if you didn’t like the first three. In terms of the story and presentation of the show, it’s more of the same I think. I’m through 8 episodes and would say it’s the best show I’ve seen in a long time. I loved 1-3 and it just keeps delivering.  Not a good show for binging imo - I need to take a breather after each episode and burn through something easier before going back.

I pretty much binged 8 of them yesterday, staying up until 4 in the morning.  So I think it works under that model too.  I totally get how it's not for everyone.  It has a very Leftovers feel.  I really love it.

I think I posted a week or two ago in this topic that I’m not recommending this show to anyone because I can understand many would find it boring. I’ve seen comparisons to the Leftovers and plan to watch that next. I’m a sucker for good post-apocalyptic stories but don’t like the ones with zombies or supernatural elements, which seem to make up the great majority. The Road affected me deeply - to the extent that I’ve never been able to watch the movie. I watched The Survivalist a couple years ago and it had me walking around in a trance for a few days after.

Part of my complaint about Station Eleven was it seemed like people were putting together sentences that made no sense. Like a jumbled combination of words. I loved Leftovers. This was not Leftovers.

What I like about the show, particularly as compared to something like The Walking Dead, is that even though terrible things happen, it's a show that's very much upbeat about the power of community and joy, even in the most trying circumstances.  The thesis of The Walking Dead--that the survivors are the walking dead--makes it a very difficult watch for me.

The thesis of Station Eleven, that survival is insufficient, resonates much more with me.  It's about the preservation of human culture and the human spirit instead of just the preservation of humanity as a species.

Some of the quotes from the Station Eleven comic book are meant to seem opaque when first encountered, but they echo through the actual events of the story as they relate to Kirsten and the Prophet.  I can see viewers finding that approach pretentious, but I don't think it's non-sensical.  They all relate very much to Kirsten and the Prophet's place in that world.

Whoa. What’s this show, which service will it be on?

They characters are randomly quoting Shakespeare throughout the dialogue. It’s really a pretentious show and the writers knew it.

I enjoyed the series.

These elements sound similar to part of why I loved The Leftovers so much.  Now that Station Eleven is complete, I'm looking forward to watching it and seeing which side of this discussion I fall on.

Station Eleven's plotlines are indeed pretty deliberate and disparate. Which I'm very ok with because those different - and sometimes barely connected - story lines are interesting to me and wondering how they will all eventually connect is part of the fun.

Sometimes slower is good. Maybe it helps avoid faux pas like Dexter sprinting through the woods a day after he got shot in the leg.

I enjoyed the BBC nuclear submarine drama Vigil on Peacock.  It combines elements of a classic locked room mystery and a modern Cold War thriller. The setting offers tons of dramatic possibilities and the filmmakers perhaps employed a few too many of them to keep the audience guessing but it was entertaining.

I have been wondering about this one. Will add it to the queue.
