Succession on HBO (1 Viewer)

But, to me, this show is full of bad acting.
I don't get this at all.
It's called an opinion. Just finished season 3 and still confused how a few of you feel this is great TV. The episode where Ken throw s his own birthday party was one of the worst hours of TV I've ever watched. Cringeworthy.

Maybe this show isn't for me.
I did not say your opinion was wrong - I just don’t get how anyone can watch and see bad acting. If you do, that’s fine. Honestly no idea why you’d devote time to watching a show you don’t like though, but that’s your prerogative as well. You’ve watched three seasons of a show you can’t stand.

Man I gotta say these last 3-4 episodes haven’t done it for me. Show seems directionless. They’ve gone from the big fbi thing to whoops nevermind and now onto another merger/acquisition with another d-bag all while the Kendall things drifts along.

I expect the Kendall situation will come to a head eventually but it seems like the show is just waiting for that to happen.
This is the most accurate comment you've made.

I feel committed now. As I said earlier, I tried three times to start this show based on some of the comments made here. I'm not alone in not liking it. I keep waiting for it to get better and it just doesn't. May as well finish it out now.

…and then waste even more time going into a message board thread and saying how much the show sucks?

Maybe I have far less time for TV, because if I truly hated a show I don’t see wasting my time to finish it. I’ve bailed on plenty of shows others seemed to enjoy. To each his own though.

This is so boring man.

I knew the writers were too good to do it, but thought we were heading for a Bluth-style collapse of the house Ken was having them build for the presentation.

Seems like they are doing a "ripped from the headlines" play on the WeWork debacle with Life+ - Kendal trying to convince investors to value a real estate company as though its a tech company.

Greg was awesome as the corporate axe man, but my favorite line of his at the tailgate was when he was explaining how Mattson doesn’t like him: “He occasionally has expressed a distaste in the past for my particular flavor of, uh, me.” That one made me laugh.

I don’t know why but I can’t shake Logan dying so suddenly. Part of me thinks it’s genius, because I’m still generally in shock/disbelief that he’s really dead. Because I’m still shocked a small part of me thinks it’s all a ruse to bring the tiger out of Kendall.

My thought was that Maatsons team will buy the company, then use Greg to fire Tom and all the Roys.

I'm a latecomer to this one, having just binged the first three seasons over the past few weeks. Considering that this is a slow-paced show featuring lots of character development where relatively little actually happens from one episode to the next, this has to be one of the easiest shows to watch that I've experienced recently. I think I blasted through 6-7 episodes just yesterday and it felt like watching a two-hour movie as opposed to a 7-hour bingefest.

I tend to like shows that unapologetically feature unlikeable characters, and Succession obviously fits that genre. The writing is just absolutely top-notch though. I can't recall the last time I watched a show that featured so many layers of irony, in which a character says something that has totally different different meanings based on (a) what is being said on the surface, (b) what the character means to communicate, (c) how the character's words are understood by the person being spoken to, and (d) how their words are understood by the audience. I'm sure I've missed a ton of nuance that I would pick up on subsequent viewings, but the quality of the writing just stands out from the very first episode.

I'm especially impressed by their ability (so far) to keep this show mostly politics-free. Obviously a bunch of the characters have real-world counterparts, and I could have done without that, but by and large it's been handled really well. It would incredibly easy to turn a show like this into something stupid and preachy. Good for them for not doing that.

This isn't the kind of show where I worry about spoilers. I know Logan dies soon, and honestly it kind of feels like he hung on for at least half a season too long, but I get why they're reluctant to kill off such a compelling character. Looking forward to getting caught up on the last season.

Agree its not preachy in the sense there isn't a binary good/bad political message, and I also really like this aspect of the show, but would add the point being driven home for me is that the super-rich really don't care one way or the other about politics or the outcome of elections for the most part. My guess is the Murdochs are the same as they win regardless.

Yes, this. This show could have (ostensibly) been based on the life of Ted Turner and it would have worked just as well. It has a message, obviously, just not a lazy partisan message.

"I'll take the libtards, you take the nazis"

The kids all showing up at Jean-Georges, staying for 5 minutes(Kendall wearing a baseball cap the entire time) ....not touching a single one of those gorgeous looking pastries on the table and then leaving absolutely triggered me.

I mean...I guess that's the kind of thing super wealthy people do, but man....I'd pay $500 to eat customer leftovers at that place.

For unlikable as he has been, Connor is having a nice arc this season.

Connor Roy was interested in politics at a VERY young age.

He's certainly been a source of entertainment this year. Obviously its more than a bit cartoonish (and the idea that the family would be ok with him flushing 9 figures down the drain for 1% of the vote so he can "be part of the conversation" is laughable) but its funny.

Him trying to negotiate for the best of the bad ambassadorships was great.

I'm sure half the audience assumes ATN is Fox News, and the other half assumes ATN is CNN.

I think it’s been very explicitly stated to be a knockoff of the Murdochs. I mean without getting political, ATN backs the Republican candidate.

Just jumping back in to say I am now on my 4th attempt to get through this show. Currently episode 6 of season 2.
My wife sat down for 5 minutes and said "what are you watching? This is terrible acting!". Tom is just awful. As is Home Alone's brother.
That has been my thought all along. Not sure how some of you think this is great TV, but I'm going to fight through it some more.
Keep us posted
Just to be clear I meant this sarcastically.

Yep, and it helps establish the show's verisimilitude by having the Roy family preside over a barely-fictionalized version of a real, extremely influential media empire. It would be weird if ATN was was purely made up, if none of the political factions in the show mapped onto the real world, etc. That would lower the story a little IMO.

I just think it's cool -- and I want to praise the writers for this -- that this show is set in the world of Fox News, but it's not really about Fox News. I mean, the Pierce family is basically presented as a carbon copy of the Roy family. We never get to know them very well, but one imagines that they have just as much palace drama as the Roys. And the show could have reasonably set the big corporate scandal in the ATM news room. Fox News has had a few high-profile sexual harassment issues, but rather than take lazy swipes at a convenient political topic, they went out of their way to move that scandal to a cruise line that I don't believe corresponds to anything at Fox at all. The creators or writers or whoever obviously made a decision early on that they want people focusing on the story, not talking about Fox. That takes some real discipline to pull off.

I had no problem with killing off Logan but I think they're failing at wrapping this up so far. With Living+ and the election, it seems like they are all over the place. I've loved the show until the last few episodes.

Tonight was boring and predictable unfortunately.

I feel the total opposite. I thought tonight was a fantastic look into the news and the fine line between reporting it and creating it.

I mean, didn't we already do this in real life? I hated it the first time fwiw.

But with only 2 episodes left it seemed out of left field. Do we really care that much about the election for the story?

They’ve been talking about this election for 2 full seasons now.

That and it set up the final blood feud between Shiv and literally everybody else.

Thought the episode was amazing. Can’t believe some of you didn’t like it.
I knew exactly how the whole episode was going to play out ten minutes In. Hella boring fwiw.
You knew that a huge catastrophe in the election would cause the rift between the 3 siblings and that Greg would be the one to shank Shiv? Ok
Mostly, yeah. It's not that hard. Nothing major or new came out of this. Her talk with Tom was the only real surprise. Last episode was vg. This was straight dragged out trash.

The drama and dialogue and humor is always good. It’s never been a realistic show but did go farther over the line than normal tonight with the idea a network calling an election would matter all that much, not to mention a president-elect being able to snap his fingers and tank a merger.

Well I’m trying to wrap my head around how they wrap this up in 2 episodes. Maybe this is the answer. This episode is the alternative reality that they just decide the election.

The next two weeks we find out that their vision of themselves as kingmakers was wrong. They are exposed as being in bed with Menchen and made decisions based on how he’d help them. They get their wish and the deal falls apart. The stock tanks and if becomes clear that Daddy was right and none of the kids were fit to run the company. The board removes them and sells the company to the pretend CNN effectively destroying their dad’s legacy. Connor ends the show as the only kid with happiness.

Yeah, this one pushed the suspension of disbelief a little too hard.

Did make me wonder what would happen if an election center did catch on fire. My god what a disaster that would be.
